Thanks for doing this one bro, one of my favourite films so it’s been emotional 😉 Fun little story, I used to say “chill Winston” a lot around my niece (around 5 years old at the time) when one day my sister and bro in law were arguing so she told them both to “chill winston”, it was hilarious 😂
I saw it in a small theatre in a small town in Finland. I always read Empire Magazine (a movie magazine) and it was so hyped in it, and a smash hit in the UK, so I had to see go see it. Then I watched over and over again on VHS. I worked in a movie rental, and I think I had this tape at home for like a year. But then I took almost 20 years me to watch it again.
Fun fact: Jason Statham sales pitch in the beginning of the film was the bit everyone trying out for the part had to audition with and he got it because he actually used to sell shady goods on the corner like that before becoming an actor.
Funner fact: that sales pitch comes from a short clip on London Market Traders shot in the 1970s, it's on youtube, Statham pretty much repeats the traders words verbatim

Soundtrack to this one is incredible, as well. Ritchie had an immediate instinct for musical accompaniment, Scorsese style. The songs are all great, and perfectly placed. And that bassline.
He did a rewatch of Snatch recently on UA-cam and said pretty much all his soundtrack songs are on a Rolodex of tracks from various pub jukeboxes from his life that he just loved.

Only 8? When this first came out, it went to video pretty quickly and I bought it just before my band went on our first European tour. One month away, proper tour bus. I think this probably got played at least twice a day.
That's always been my thought too. It's such an iconic British heist film that I'm positive Guy Richie was influenced by it, and the ending is just a perfect nod to The Italian Job's literal cliffhanger ending.
@@ClodiusP the original was one of my absolute favourite films growing up. The remake, on the other hand... let's not talk about the remake, it saddens me.
I think this one edges out Snatch as my favorite simply because of how amazingly well orchestrated the storytelling was, and the sheer amount of mania of the heist-gone-wrong.
Yes Mate!!! Glad you went onto this from Snatch. I'd go and watch "Layer Cake" Next, it's Mattew Vaughn Directing instead of Guy but feels very similar.
Seconding the Layer Cake recommendation. Daniel Craig in his early career, before he was an international name, and one of the best soundtracks ever put to film.
I've loved Guy Ritchie movies forever. He has a Shakespearean talent for pulling all these subplots together from a seemingly chaotic mess. A lot of people in this that I forgot. Rob Bryden as the cop who gets knocked out into the back of the van, Nicholas Rowe (tall weed dealer who gets his foot blown off) was Sherlock in Spielbergs 80s flick Young Sherlock Holmes. and Danny John-Jules who was the Cat in Red Dwarf.
They filmed scenes from this across the street from my college in kingston when I was 16 on our lunch break would all go over to watch it was good times
The Old guy sitting down at 8:18 is Lenny McLean. He was a English unlicensed boxer, bouncer, bodyguard, businessman and actor. He was known as "The Guv'nor" he had been involved in between 2,000 and 3,000 unlicensed fights and bare-knuckle fights. And was considered the unofficial heavyweight champion of Great Britain. Along with being an unlicensed boxer, McLean was an enforcer in London's criminal underworld. As a respected and feared figure, he often associated with infamous East End of London Gangsters criminals The Kray twins also Ronnie Biggs and Charles Bronson. He was also known in the London nightclub scene as a bouncer, where he often managed security. I’m watching a dvd about him called The Guvnor

Mathew Vaughn, the producer on these guy Guy Ritchies films, directed his own gangster film called ‘Layer Cake’ which is great too, not as comical but great
I love the little details in the movies. Hatchet Harry's right hand man was a very famous London hardman called Lennie McLean. He passed away a few yeara ago but if you read his story or UA-cam it another dimension to lock Stock gets added. Brilliant..
Watching your reaction to this film is almost like watching this film for the first time for me! I have seen it to the point of being able to quote nearly all of it in the most irritating accent! I’m sure someone mentioned this by now, but this was Ritchie’s first film - raw, low budget, and utterly brilliant! No question it’s his best, hands down. I had the incredible fortune to be living in South London when this film came out over there. I was 22, work/lived in a pub, and the young locals & I became fast (party) friends. They planned an outing when a few of us were off shift at the pub, and we all went to see this in the theater together. The Brits were SO excited for this film, and neither the film nor the audience disappointed. Mayhem in the theater as well as on screen. It was a legendary experience. Here is one more detail that is incredibly f-ing cool and further ties me to this film in a big way. As I said, the pub I work/lived in was in South London. Battersea is the name of the neighborhood, so named because it was just across the - you guessed it - Battersea Bridge. Yes, that same bridge at the end of the film… which we walked across regularly and which we walked across on our way home from the film. Needless to say, everyone had a turn pretending to be Tom.
Completely agree!! For me it’s such a fun film and I feel like Richie just had fun and tried out a lot of cool stuff when making it, not to mention the killer soundtrack! It’s a favorite for me!
It’s crazy that the dude who played Soap became a big time director of Eddie The Eagle & Rocketman! Can’t wait to see what he does with the Sherlock Holmes franchise.
16mm is an underrated medium. Some movies, that extra grit is like its own character. Everything doesn't have to be ultra high resolution all the time, sometimes movies can be a little grimy.
Character. 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, they all add a level of character, just as black and white (sepia-toned) vs technicolor in The Wizard of Oz. It makes a movie's personality.

Here is a weird suggestion for you, The Hood series. The films are Kidulthood (06), Adulthood (08), and Brotherhood (16). They are UK crime films but from the perspective of kids in the inner city. The first two are the best but the third is a lot of fun too. An interesting watch mostly because it's a different side of the UK that had very little media made about it at the time and through the series you see a lot of actors who went on to bigger things. The series soundtrack even helped popularise grime with a lot of the actors being UK rappers as well namely Stormzy in Brotherhood just before he became massive.
This is one of my most loved, most quoted films ever. Came out when I was 18. Holy shit. haha Yeah, when I saw you react to Snatch, I REALLY hoped you'd come back to this one. For your sake. haha This one was an instant classic and a real "Who the hell is this director?" moment.
IIRC this film was Jason Statham's first. He was discovered by Ritchie working as a bouncer in a club and Ritchie just saw his face and thought "this is the guy I want in my movie"
Interesting fact, the bald guy who hangs out with hatchet harry was a real life bare knuckle boxer/bouncer/gangster in east london called Lennie McLean.

what ... the ... hell ... man... I just looked through the movies you have watched this year. I think you have had the best movie year of any person in existence.
This film is incredibly well shot and stylised, the music score, the humour and pace of the film is very good, Lock Stock is a hugely underrated piece of cinema.
I love your reactions. I recently watched your reaction to Snatch. Your love for cinematography is so apparent. Happy New Year & Love from the UK 💜 -x-
Saw this film in 1998 on the opening night in the cinema. Stopped off in the car park to smoke some weed in the car with my mates before hand and we lost track of time (as you do) The tickets we had were in the front row of the cinema (shit seats I know, but being the opening night, beggars couldn’t be choosers) when we got to the theatre the film was just starting. Instead of disturbing everyone we just laid down in the aisle, stoned at the back of the theatre and proceeded to eat all our munch and watch the film. Seen this film countless times since. The soundtrack is well worth buying/downloading as it has dialogue from the film as well as the songs used Great review and I bet you watch it countless times too Happy new year all
I read his autobiography. Towards the end he spoke about discovering his joy of acting a bit too late in life because he was then diagnosed with cancer. It was a poignant end to a crazy life story. I found him fascinating, but I couldn't shake off the fact that he was a gangster and brought untold misery to folks life.
Wasn't expecting this one to end the year but very happy to see it show up. Best wishes to everyone for 2021. On top of everything else cool in this movie it has an awesome soundtrack start to finish.
YES! I’m so glad you reacted to this. Isn’t SOOO GOOOD!? Everything is great; music, shots, acting, script, dialogue, editing. And I’m glad you picked up on the texture and gritty filmmaking in this. It’s unpolished and yet super polished. I don’t know how to explain it. It’s like a young filmmaker who wasn’t afraid to try ANYTHING and it pays off.
If you want to see the all time greatest British gangster film then I have to point you in the direction of "The Long Good Friday" with Bob Hoskins. The actor who played Hatchet Harry has a prominent role, and the actor who played Brick Top in "Snatch" also features briefly.
Snatch and Lock Stock are definitely shot in exactly the same style, with several of the same actors, but to me the stories were just different enough for me to love both films.
I like to think guy ritchie had so many good ideas for snatch it was easy to make a movie that for the most part stands alone. Some of the "everyone is traveling to the big moment" scenes felt recycled but what are you gonna do? Characters gotta get around from A to B. Usually not a fan of open endings but this is one of my favorite endings in any movie.
I think I recommended this before, but you gotta check out Guy Ritchie's Revolver. It's experimental as hell, and one of the most bizarre movies I've ever sat through. And though it's not a Guy Ritchie movie (Matthew Vaughn directs), check out Layer Cake, starring Daniel Craig. It's very similar in style to Ritchie's early work.
@@nathanharrison8901 I found Revolver pretty disappointing, but I didn't know there was a different UK version and I'm sure the version I saw would have been the US version, so maybe that's the reason why... I'll have to look for the UK version!

What a strange experience. I'm watching a reaction to a Guy Ritchie film with another Guy Ritchie (The Gentlemen) playing on my TV. The barely conscious woman waking up to be an absolute badass with the machine gun was an epic moment of the film. Happy New Year, James. Thank you for being one of the things that have helped me get through 2020. Your reactions have been a nourishing distraction from the worst of this year. May next year be better for all of us.

Good call.
Annuvahood was the best one
Love the music, too. Brings you into the scene, yardies, etc. Watching it again right now.
Genius script/dialog. One of my favourite movies.
IIRC this film was Jason Statham's first. He was discovered by Ritchie working as a bouncer in a club and Ritchie just saw his face and thought "this is the guy I want in my movie"
Also let's not forget Jason's earlier "film" appearance in the music video "Comin' On" by The Shamen:

Before all that, he was an Olympic diver
With hair
The bar scene is my favorite drinking montage of all time. Love the channel and your enthusiasm for cinema.
Ayyy happy to hear that! I need to recreate that whenever I’m in the UK
Interesting fact, the bald guy who hangs out with hatchet harry was a real life bare knuckle boxer/bouncer/gangster in east london called Lennie McLean.
Other interesting fact ... he got his own movie called Lennie!
Man what a monster looking man
I always felt like he must have been a fighter lol
I found it a very interesting film although not necessarily one of the bests still well made
@@pomaimoikeha829 the guy was a beast. Not the sort of guy you want to head butt before the first bell has rung lol ua-cam.com/video/muGpJE1kLSo/v-deo.html
what ... the ... hell ... man... I just looked through the movies you have watched this year. I think you have had the best movie year of any person in existence.
Whether or not you prefer this or Snatch, you can't deny that this was a fantastic debut by who would become a mostly great writer/Director.
This film is incredibly well shot and stylised, the music score, the humour and pace of the film is very good, Lock Stock is a hugely underrated piece of cinema.
You have now seen all Guy Richie's best movies. However, the first Sherlock Holmes movie which he made was also very good.
rock n rolla is good no?
@@moodfm5673 I've only seen it once. I don't remember much about it.
In 2001 I was 20 and I watched this movie I think 50 times the first year I discovered it. One of the best sound tracks and just awesome dialog
You talk about "La Haine" at the beginning of the movie, have you seen "Un Prophète" (A Prophet) by J. Audiard ?
Great movie !!
another great film
I love your reactions. I recently watched your reaction to Snatch. Your love for cinematography is so apparent. Happy New Year & Love from the UK 💜 -x-
He’s not a cop, he’s a parking attendant.
The soundtrack is well worth buying/downloading as it has dialogue from the film as well as the songs used
Great review and I bet you watch it countless times too
Happy new year all
The bloke playing Barry the Baptist was a real life gangster, Lenny McLean, The Guv’nor.
Know hes son. Spitting image of him as well. Not as big....but still big
Wasn't expecting this one to end the year but very happy to see it show up. Best wishes to everyone for 2021. On top of everything else cool in this movie it has an awesome soundtrack start to finish.
Layer Cake is a good take on the Snatch and Lock Stock style.
Directed by Mathew Vaughn, Guy Ritchies producer on these films
as a massive fan of this film it was a genuine pleasure to watch along with you!
I actually just watched this movie for the first time today. I was on a guy richie marathon this week after i watched your snatch vid. Love your vids✌
Appreciate it!
"It's me bren gun" Best line! =)
The Guy they keep punching in the van is a traffic warden. Not a cop.
You did a brilliant job explaining it in my opinion!
If you want to see the all time greatest British gangster film then I have to point you in the direction of "The Long Good Friday" with Bob Hoskins. The actor who played Hatchet Harry has a prominent role, and the actor who played Brick Top in "Snatch" also features briefly.
Absolutely agree!!
My all-time favourite movie. Thank you for your reaction, mate!;)
To this day, I still can't decide which of the 4 Guy Ritchie gangster films is my favorite. The 4th being Rock N Rolla.
Yup it has to be next.
Not a police officer getting punched in the back of the van btw.
Think of him more like a meter maid.
One of my favorite films!
One of my All Time Favoritre Movies!
This and Snatch! 2 amazing films, and they havent lost anything over the years...
Both movies still hold up!
I am loving these reactions. Keep up the amazing work, James!
Appreciate you Kingpin!
Revolver is amazing. But you have to see the UK version. They ripped out a lot of great stuff in the US version to dumb it down
Fully agree with Layer Cake.
@@nathanharrison8901 I found Revolver pretty disappointing, but I didn't know there was a different UK version and I'm sure the version I saw would have been the US version, so maybe that's the reason why... I'll have to look for the UK version!
@@randalthor741 yea they changed a lot of the 3rd act in the US version and was really dumbed down. If you get a chance to see the UK version it leaves you with a very different experience.
Wasn't Revolver conceived whilst Guy Ritchie was under Madonnas influence? I heard it was Kabbala related
Hey happy New Year man. I have loved watching your reviews/reactions this year. They have been a welcomed distraction. I really look forward to see what you watch next in the new year. I hope your new year is blessed.
Appreciate this comment so much..man you guys make every post the light of the day for me. Seriously thank you!
It's been emotional ... what more is there to say :-)
happy new yaer dude, i am totally looking fwd to seeing ur joy at movies in the new
year
If you haven't seen it and like films with smart sharp dialogue, check out "Jackie Brown" a criminally under appreciated Tarantino film.
Duuude so hyped for this. My dad showed me this well over a decade ago and I found it so interesting and fun. Happy new years! Be safe.
Dad sounds like a cool dude hahaha Happy Néw Year!
Watch Man From UNCLE! Not quite the same style, but great movie!!!
Traffic Wardens are one of the most detested people in the UK, that's why when they hit him everyone in the UK cinemas either cheered or laughed.
Yes, the narrator is the main gangster from Snatch 👍
Ayyyy thank you for confirming haha!
Brick Top!!
My absolute favorite movie of all time. Saw it in the cinema day one and watched it over and over since that.
What a fella Vinnie Jones is "I'm the Jugunaut bitch" aye Vinnie cheers
Cheers to Vinnie 🍻
I just watched video by Guy Ritchie where he tells his story about Snatch and he talks about Vinnie Jones being Guy's and Stathams "big brother". Very good watch if you are interested. "Guy Ritchie talking about Snatch" twenty years later" in UA-cam.
James I enjoy your reaction to the videos I’ve seen! Love this channel !
My favorite Guy Ritchie film. Lets go!
Oh yeah!!
So USA's got Tarantino, UK's got Guy Ritchie, you got that pretty much covered now, what about some japanese action? Takeshi Kitano anyone? "Outrage" hmm?🤔😎
Akira Kurosawa
sonatine, hana-bi and brother are pretty good aswell
Violent Cop too. And you can't do Kitano without Battle Royale!
sympathy for lady vengeance
Hana Bi (Fireworks), Kitano and a change of pace.
Saw this at the cinema when I was 17, was completely blown away, nothing like it before.
