The juxtaposition of their image versus their sound is one of the most common hangups with Ghost, so it's not surprising. Glad you enjoyed, and keep'em coming! 🤘
Metallica are huge Ghost fans but Kirk said he never laid eyes on them at first. I saw a clip of Tobias and Kirk chilling doing an informal interview. So awesome. Ghost did a remake of Enter Sandman.
Consider this about Ghost's image vs their sound: Ghost's lyrics frequently are pretty pro-Satan (not that anyone in the band literally is worshipping Satan, but its done for theater.) They package it inside a song that is as you mentioned, catchy & cool. The songs you've listened to are very accessible by the masses. The type of songs that most people would hear and be, "Oh, hey, that was pretty cool." So its songs that can fit in the mainstream, talking about the joys of the Devil. If Satan really did exist, and he was on a mission to spread his word and influence via music, wouldn't THIS be the way to catch as many people? Like, you've got the 'obviously evil' metal bands out there with crazy heavy riffs and ridiculous amounts of growling. But those bands are always so niche. Ghost is like an exact image of what your uber-Christians would be most concerned about. They're not going to be worried about bands like Corpsegrinder. Its too 'obviously evil', and unlikely that their children are going to be receptive to such a band. But Ghost? Ghost is making the devil seem cool and appealing. They can 'blend in' with all the other popular rock bands if you don't pay too much attention, all while singing praises to Satan, haha
If Satan exists, then I've seen his smile and felt his warm handshake countless times as I enter a church. Very cordial, very welcoming into his realm of deception.
This video always gives me Rocky Horror vibes. Specifically the Time Warp scene. Couple of rubes stumble onto a mansion party and shit gets weird and violent fast. Also I don't care how sick the party might be: After all that 'What party??' fuss and then suddenly 'We've been expecting you', I'm bailing like the one dude who knows he's in a horror movie. Call me Rod Williams 'cause I TSAin't having that shit.
The main theme of the song is back in the times of the Black Plague, rich French people would have parties in which they would feast, drink, dance and do 'other physical activity' 😉 for days, and mainly without sleep, because it's was seen as better to pass on enjoying your self then not.

To wash out a little bit the "looks doesn't match music", try those: - Mummy Dust - Faith - Rats - Kaiserion - Hunter's Moon - From The Pinnacle To The Pit - Ritual - Year Zero - Twenties - Con Clavi Con Dio
It’s satanism meets Abba. Do a reaction to Year Zero, Ritual or maybe Deus in absentia - and listen to the lyrics aswell. Always listen to the lyrics when it comes to Ghost. It’s a lot darker than what meets the ear.
I’m from Chicago. Originally when I heard this song, I totally thought Tobias was saying “just wanna be, wanna be with you in the moonlight” because Chicago accents often say “witchu” instead of “with you”, so when I saw a lyric video and I saw it was literally “bewitch” you, I felt so stupid 😂
The elevator pitch for this band is: They're in service to Satan to get devotees and every so often Satan get displeased with the progress, so the front man is taken out and replaced, thus changing up their look and sound. Their older stuff was very 70s metal - Black Sabbath, Judas Priest kinda sound and it's... just gone all over the place from there. 😂 Wanna see the opposite of what you're talking about? Look for Mummy Dust Live 2022 - He's in a blue sequin jacket and it sounds like death metal. 🤣
You should check out their song Miasma, which you hear the tail end of at the title card for the video (sexy saxophone lol). It's a killer instrumental track.
Definitely react to something even a bit older. Cirice is a song that is slower and more ominous and has a good music video to go with it but Secular Haze is even older and actually has the band in it that shows what they looked like in the second age of Ghost (Papa ll) we are currently in the fourth age of Ghost (some would say 4.5 with the current rendition of the vocalist starting out as cardinal and ascending to Papa4)
I meant to include in my other comment: If you want to find songs that better match their image: Year Zero Cirice Faith Twenties Mummy Dust (the only song I can think of where he gets a bit growly on the vocals) Con Clavi Con Dio These will all feel a bit 'darker' than the ones you've heard so far. Although I think Call Me Little Sunshine leans that way a bit too. The vocal style doesn't change (aside form Mummy Dust), but the instruments will feel more sinister for sure.
I know this video was 4 months ago, but the imagery serves two purposes, it shows the beginning of the Character that tobias plays, but the video also is a pop interpretation of the black plague, the Danse Macabre was a night where everyone was dying with the plague, so they just danced and partied like there was not going to be a tomorrow, because there wasn't going to be one, as they all were going to die.
This is exactly what someone trying to sway masses would do. They wouldn't do death metal, they'd do pop rock that appeals to millions so they can corrupt them. It makes total sense in context of the story of Ghost.
If I had to give you a recommendation, then it would be the first ever Ghost song I listened to and it's called Square Hammer, it's also their most popular song by youtube views.
Bradley Bailey played the host who answered the door. Justin Andrews plays the visitor with the short hair, Brendan McGowan plays the other visitor. Tobias Forge is the converted Papa.
Mary on a Cross live in Tampa. They have a lore and backstory that others that can give you the info much better than I. This band won a Grammy for the song, Cirice. They just won AMA for the latest album, Impera. Check out Square Hammer..
This is the first time Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator meets. There is so much more to Ghost then just the music. You should really check out the Chapter videos to understand. Dance Macabre is the dance of death that the plague infested danced all night literally partied till they died. The whole album Prequelle is about the black plague.
I came to say the same. As catchy and upbeat as the song sounds on the surface, really it's a lamentation that their time together is coming to an end because they all know they're going to die of the plague.
In the bible it mentions how Lucifer is one of the most beautiful angels, which he would use to deceive people. I like to think of Ghost's music is a lot like that, you get drawn into this catchy amazing music, and before you know it your singing songs about satan.
The best way ive found to explain their look is to call it excellent theater. In much the way Kiss or Gwar or even Iron Maiden to some extent, puts on a looks and a show, its all about good theater and entertainment. You could watch a bunch of dudes in band tshirts put on a good concert, or you can watch Ghost and Tobias Forge put on a great show thats pleasing to not only the ears but to the eyea as well. Excellent entertainment.
I am new to the band myself, and the reason I avoided them was their image as like you I thought it would be like this really heavy shit, but when I finally heard their music I was hooked. The thing is, yes the songs sound very upbeat and catchy, but if you listen to or read the lyrics you will see that the lyrics actually do match the image. There is though a very big sense of humour and tongue in cheek style to this band as well. If you watch the little story chapters they post on their channel, they are hilarious.
Lol..love your commentary. Definitely check out Year Zero unedited version. Absolution is also an Amazing song you can hear all kinds of musical influences in that one.
If you can’t get past the creepy mask lol Maybe you should watch some Tobias Forge interviews where he explains how he grew up on 80s metal and also anything that was popular at the time, so of course some of his songs are very melodic and catchy but that’s what I love about them! I’ve heard some people refer to them as “Scooby Doom” or “Goth Weezer” lol. Of course the Abba reference too, because they’re Swedish. Also maybe watch some videos explaining the lore behind the band. Why there is Cardinal Copia, Papa 1, 2, 3 & 4. It’s pretty funny. They have chapters on their UA-cam channel

Satan needs to be catchy and spread to the most people possible. Thats the idea. Not gonna win the most hearts and souls by wearing corpse paint AND playing screaching black metal. 8)
Your problem is, you're trying to understand them using your traditional methods of understanding. Just enjoy, stop struggling, as you follow and learn, the understanding of Ghost will come to you. 💀
I'm not sure how much "image" should play into a band's quality. Ghost are great songwriters, and musicians, and put on excellent lives shows. Plus they are fun, they troll the whole notion religious (and metal) dogma. Would it be better if they wore jeans and black t-shirts?
i avoided this band for YEARS because of their look. i was like great, another Swedish death metal band. you have to give Tobias credit he took a genre of music (melodic rock) that radio will not play anymore in the U.S since the grunge days and he dressed it up as a satanic evil band and fooled rock radio stations into thinking its ok to play that type of music because of Ghosts image of evil and cool..it was a genius move because if it wasnt for the satanic shtick radio would have never play them because for some unknown reason they will not play anything melodic anymore...good for him i hope this opens the door for more
Gost has reinvented themselves many times over the years, comming from doom metal all the way to this 70-80's themed pop music. Every once in awhile the lead singer changes character, basically becomming a new front man for the band, and in doing so they change the direction and feel of the band. They’re playing off the Catholic Church obviously but instead of being of service to the holy trinity, they spin it to be faithful to satan. In a satirical sense. It’s theater meets a rock band with comedic tones to make it work perfectly in my opinion.
I feel like if Satan was trying to influence ppl through music it wouldn’t be deathcore or other hard to get into sub genre of metal, it’d be more Beyoncé then cannibal corpse. Something more ppl liked, easier to listen to, and just slip the pro Satan agitprop into that sht.
This is where Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator meet and she turns him into PAPA!
