    All the church scenes in this video were shot here in Detroit. Everyone there was just a real ghost fan that was asked to dress up and show up for a video shoot.

      I'd say impressive production, great melodies, but for the most part very formulaic and predictable/boring song structures. And like all modern music almost no middle eight sections on top of it. To me the latest material is lacking. Got boring really fast

    It's such a great song. And very emotional. If I'm not wrong, the song is actually about TFs brother who passed away the same day Ghost blew up on MySpace in 2010.
    QUOTE from METALHAMMER: Tobias' brother Sebastian had collapsed and died at home due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Forge continued: "It felt like some weird trade: the band for my brother. It was like, 'This has happened, there's nothing I can do with it, I've just got to take the ball and run with it.' And I've been running with it ever since."

    Yes, he kinda looks like Elvis but its actually a reference on Jim Jones I believe. Im sure that their first music video is for the song named Secular Haze from their second album. Featuring the scariest Papa of all time - Papa II. :D Btw its the same papa you seen in Year Zero reaction. He just didnt have scull paint :)

    • @neuralmute
      @neuralmute Рік тому +1

      The look is referencing both Jim Jones and another evangelist/cult leader named Tony Alamo, who was busted on some serious charges of embezzlement and child molestation. This song and video are some pretty vicious satire.

      @@Gnorf Oh yeah, I was aware of the Tony Alamo pic easter egg. I'm just of the opinion that Tobias wouldn't leave it at mocking just one criminal preacher, and that you don't look that much like someone as distinctive as Jim Jones by accident.

    I love your reaction to this one, and I love this song too! I've often joked that this is the best "Christian Rock" song ever written - and it's about the devil. XD
    Tobias Forge has said before that part of his purpose with Ghost is to "draw a moustache on the church", and think he's succeeded with this one!
    Your idea of doing a full album listen is spot on - Tobias writes his albums as units that flow into each other, with instrumental tracks and themes carrying between songs and through the entire album. In fact, if you put the latest album, Impera, on a loop, the ending of the last track, Respite On The Spitalfields, (one of my favourite Ghost songs thus far), flows directly into the instrumental intro, Imperium. Since the album's theme is the rise and fall of empires, it works brilliantly.
    EDIT:
    As for what song to do next, if you want to hear something heavier, go for Mummy Dust, especially a live version. It's a banger with a keytar solo. If you want another ridiculous, fun video with a stupidly catchy song, go for Dance Macabre. (It's pronounced ma-CAB-ra, and the title means "dance of death.")
    Keep up the great fun with Ghost!

    The song that started it all for me. Still love it with my whole heart. Nostro Dis Pater Nostr alma mater is latin for our god of the underworld , our nourishing Mother. Fun fact: a christian radio station in America played this song and no one reacted. Quote the opposite when some people called in and asked about the beautiful song they just played 🤣
    If you like progressive try Kaisarion. A lot of Rush , The Who, Queen in that one.

    @ZannNewman Рік тому +3

    "Evil Elvis" is a spoof of Church Cult leaders like Tony Alamo or Jim Jones / the Latin bit is "Nostro dis pater, Nostro alma mater" which is roughly "our dark/unholy father, our nurturing mother"

  • @ragnes18
    @ragnes18 Рік тому +10

    Nostro dis pater, nostr' alma mater”
    Dīs Pater refers to a Roman/pagan God of the underworld (hell).
    Hence, Nostro Dīs Pater, means Our god of the underworld. Or “Our God of Hell” if you want.
    Nostr' alma mater [2]means our nourishing mother. And before its current usage, referring to schools, alma mater was an honorific title for various pagan mother goddesses.

  • @Lazarus_Cardinalis
    @Lazarus_Cardinalis Рік тому +16

    To answer your question, Dis Pater was a Roman deity of the Netherworld which translates as "The Wealthy Father", he's usually associated with Hades/Pluto or Dionysus/Bacchus, and Alma Mater, who you can encounter these days as an academic title, means "nourishing Mother", another Roman deity!

    • @fredriks5090

      In norse myth, Otr/Ottar is the wealthy guardian of the (under)water.
      The name is cognate with Hydra, both meaning "waterbeast".
      The regenerative ring of Odin, or the Ring of wealth, is an overarching theme in the west norse, animalistic norse and anglo-saxon Beowulf as well.
      Overall, Dis Pater could just be a romanization of the greek 'Dyeus (p)Udros' or "God of the (multiplying)Waters".

    Great reaction. Yes, much of Ghost's catalog/lore trolls the church. Tobias has said he was in Catholic school, and did not have a good experience. He Is is definitely is a straight-faced parody of a worship song. Change a couple of words, and this would play well at many churches. As to your question about weaker Ghost songs. I will just say that Ghost has an amazingly high level of consistency both on songs chosen for albums, and all of their 5 albums and EP. Even their B sides are great. okay so, THIS SONG. This is the song that made me love Ghost. I HATED them at first because my friends showed me a guy dressed as a satanic pope and told me it was a metal band, so I was expecting some hardcore gothic/black metal, and they had me listen to Rats and i was disappointed. Now, I'm also a true, practicing Satanist. And it's a little tiring to only have music about my religion that's very angry and defensive, instead of joyful. This song is everything I never realized I was missing. It's full of the kind of love and community that we don't get to have. It sounds like a hymn.

    Discovered this band about a year ago, went down the rabbit hole, and they are now one of my favorite bands.
    My Ghost discovery is thanks to another Scandinavian band called VOLBEAT from Denmark.

    Volbeat and Ghost were on tour together last year, and so one thing led to another.
    I am really digging your Ghost journey, but would love to see you go down the VOLBEAT rabbit hole as well.

    "Mummy Dust" and "Pinnacle to the pit" .. my least favorite was always "Dance macabre", I don't know.. just too poppy for me, sounds like music for rednecks :))) Now about the video, the character portrait here is not Elvis, as you thought at a first glance, but the reverend James Warren Jones aka Jim Jones who was the cult leader of "The Peoples Temple" christian community and a mass murderer.

    This song is about the Devil, nostro dispater nostra alma mater means our nourishing mother. Those are the trolls like catholic Church mass or Sunday service.

    Actually, Jesus and his. The song's a riff on gospel and the video's basically a Catholic megachurch.

    Just throwing my 20 cents in (because this post will likely be a bit longer than just 2 cents.)
    First to answer your question, "Do they write bad songs?" I'm still waiting to them try, lol.
    But I wanted to touch on two major things you brought up. One was about how they handle religion and what not, since you touched on your own experience with it. The second is in relation to song writing.
    As far as they stand with religion, I feel people misconstrue them on both ends of the spectrum. You'll have the obvious group that hates them for their offensive imagery calling them devil worshippers and all that. But then on the other side, people over compensate too hard by insisting that Satanism is just a gimmick. First with Satanism these days, it's just hardcore Atheism. People that want to ensure that freedom of religion stays true and that church and state remain separate. (Common example is if a gov't building wants to put a 10 Commandments statue up, then they better be willing to put up the Satanic statue right next to it.) Satanism may as well just be synonymous with skepticism. And I think Tobias, despite still seemingly being a believer to some degree, is also a skeptic. At least when it comes to organized religion that is so easily used by awful individuals to manipulate others and use them at the expense for their own person gain. Ghost is putting a mirror up to the many things that can be found wrong in religion and showing what some of these people are really like. I think you used the word 'parody', which I think is certainly a fair choice. But its definitely parody with a pointed intent.
    But moving on to the song writing, yeah, you nailed it when talking about the solos. Its crazy how perfectly they always fit in with the song. They're likely never going to win 'awards' for having the most badass solo of all time, but damn, they ALWAYS do exactly what they need to do to bring whatever song it is up to the next level and get you ready for that final verse/chorus. Its crazy impressive that he and whatever musicians he has with him nail it like that every damn time.

      @@rockdariff I think is referring to a frame that comes up very quickly at 05:52 of the preacher they are parodying here. I believe his name was Tony Alamo, and apparently he died more or less at the same time they were shooting this video.
