Hi! First of all -Yes they always dress like that. Ghost has a lot of lore and is in some ways confusing. The backstory (vaguely) is that ghost exists to spread satanism through catchy music (but it's slightly more nuanced than that). The current vocalist is Papa Emeritus IV, also known as Copia. He is played by the Swedish musician Tobias Forge. Tobias also played the previous 3 lead singers (Papa Emeritus I, II and III). Also Tobias is wearing a mask and not make-up which makes the performance all the more impressive.
The band members are all known as nameless Ghouls. They have worn different masks and outfits through the years but their faces and most identifying features are always covered. The band are touring musicians and have switched a lot during the years. Tobias pretty much is Ghost. A lot of the fans like to give the ghouls nicknames to tell them apart (these are generally agreed upon but other names pop up occasionally) and you can find out who they are online but as some people don't want to know I won't include their names here. The current lineup is:
Ghoul, ghoul, ghoul, ghoul, ghoul, ghoulette, ghoulette, ghoulette
or
Lead Guitar(White Guitar): Dew/Sodo
Rhythm Guitar(Black Guitar): Phantom (in the video you watched its a different rhythm guitarist known as Aether. Aether also used to do some backing vocals)
Bass: Rain
Drums: Mountain
Backing Vocals (and more): Swiss
Keyboards + Backing vocals: Cumulus
Keyboards: Cirrus (she also does some backing vocals but she is harder to hear as she usually goes for the lower ranges and is overpowered by the others singing higher)
Backing Vocals (and more): Aurora (In this video it's Sunshine)
All the harmonies are done live.
If you want to listen to more songs I'd recommend Cirice (Grammy award winning), Year Zero and Square Hammer. These are the most popular and some of the best. Spillways is also fantastic :)
Definitely Cirice next!
and Dance Macabre!
I vote Spillways! It’s so good!
“How have I never heard about this group before?”were my thoughts exactly before diving in the rabbit hole called Ghost. Love them!
RIGHT?!!! I was the same! I was like "How did they fly under my radar for SO LONG?!!!" 😆😆
Yep same!
I just found out about them today. I love this guys voice and their music is so good.
What are your favorite songs by then I just started listening to them
@@Kekat_editz Enjoy the ride! ❤️Respite on the Spitalfields is my favourite song, but I also love Year Zero, He is, Witch Image, Call me Little Sunshine, Dance Macabre, Mary on a Cross, Life Eternal, Rats, etc.
enjoy the rabbit hole man its worth it. One of the most talented bands ive ever heard.. between them and sabaton Sweden owns my spotify playlists
Dude, listen to ALL of Ghost. They are so damn good.
I took my mother, father, wife, son and daughter to see them last year and we all walked away saying It was one of the best concerts we have ever seen.
Please dive deeper
I am 54 years old and my 22 yo daughter got me hooked on Ghost. In fact, we went to 2 rituals (concerts) in 2023. Concord, CA and Los Angeles on the last night of the tour. She follows the lore more closely than I do, but I love Tobias and the music.
I'm 67 and my 30 yo Daughter turned me on to them last year! Good music transcends generations!
Looking forward to more Ghost reaction videos.
Amazing band from Sweden!
Thanks from Sweden
Funny that you mentioned how the musicians look like they're dressed up for a Star Wars convention. Tobias Forge is a huge star wars fan and their masks are inspired by the tuskin raiders
Tobias Forge is the singer. But live he has three Ghoulettes (women) and two Ghouls (men) who sings Backup Vocals. That's why it's so powerful. Tobias comes from various music styles from swedish pop music to AOR to Death Metal and mixes everything in Ghost. There are way heavier songs from them but since Mary on a cross is supposed to be from 1969 it is influenced by that. (It's not really from 1969 but it's a long story to explain but you will understand the more you listen to Ghost).
I love you're appreciation for those vocals especially towards the finale of this piece. Not many people point that out. They're blend is just so heavenly.
Tobias doesn't phone it in. It's all live
Tobias is a master mind
My name is Tobias and i agree.😆😆😆
And another catchy one is Square Hammer.
💯
This and Dance Macabre
They are all awesome vocalists. They are a phenomenal rock band
They?
Together, they form a great band on stage, but officially, Ghost is just Tobias Forge and no one else.
Tobias should let them play on albums. Every single member is a great musician. Per and Randy are shredders. I watched Hayden and a drum off competition.
Ghost is fantastic. Been around since 2006 but released their first album in 2010. Formed in Sweden and won a Grammy in 2015 for Cirice.
They have so many great songs. Rats, Faith, Spillways, He is, Ritual, Year Zero, Dance Macabre, to name a few.
They were totally anonymous until a lawsuit on the Front figure, Tobias Forge, back in 2016. Therefore the masks. They kept the masks even after that.
The music is widely spread in genres from quite dark doom kind of metal to very popy disco. You never know besides it will be a really great song! 😅
*You wanna hear a heavy sh*t? Listen Ghost - Mummy Dust*
Definitely do more Ghost. It's a rabbit hole with no turning back.
The Ghost rabbithole is deep and interesting, you should do more reactions of them! I saw them live last year and it's the best show I've ever been to.
They do have some heavier songs. A popular one is Cirice.
This band is Top Notch! Both great music and funny charactaristics.
Ghost makes you happy
Faith (from A Pale Tour Named Death)
Hoping to see more ghost soon, & yes, it’s all live. They’re all amazing ! :)
"Was that Taylor Swift?" 😂😂 - love your Videos, plus this is a great song!
Thanks!
More Ghost, please.
He's got a few different outfits depending on which song he's singing. Check out Mummy Dust or Faith if you like the heavier stuff.
The masks are more significant than you might think. The dress of the Ghouls changes with every album/tour, as the "setting" for each album is a different time period. This one is around the beginning of the 1920's, and the Ghouls have masks that are reminiscent of WWI Gas Masks (and the rest of the costumes are reminiscent of WWI era uniforms). Before this, it was the Renaissance, and prior to that Medieval stylings...
I hope that that helps explain things!
I can confirm that they are great to see live if you can get tickets. I saw them in Austin, TX a couple of years ago without having listened to them much (mainly went to see Spiritbox, who opened for them), and that made a fan out of me.
Love Ghost. The best thing to happen to rock in the last 20 years (IMO). The perfect blend between ABBA and Black Sabbath (I call them 'ABBA Sabbath'). Tobias is a songwriting genius. He changes the frontman for each album, but it's always him, wearing a mask. Here he's playing Papa Emeritus IV (Papa = pope, Emeritus = honorary retired = dead pope - it's a joke). The lyrics are always multi-layered in meaning. Some songs are very dark, some light, like this one, but they are always very intelligent and thought-provoking. There's a long storyline associated with them.
P.S. They have a movie coming out in June that's a filmed concert, called 'Rite Here, Rite Now'.... plus some more of that story or lore, we think...
I love watching people discover Ghost! Tobias Forge and Ghost is a rabbit hole you’ll never regret going down.
Bro you had me at Sting 😂😂😂
Give Dance Macabre and Cirice a spin.
Pleeeeeease listen to more Ghost songs!
What is so special for me is their amazing harmonies (7:44 is just outstanding and give me goosebumps every time). Even the more "metal" songs (e.g. Mummy Dust) are just catchy and harmonic.
I'm Swedish and I had never heard of them before, but as soon as I heard them they became my favourite group. And Swiss with his beautiful, soaring vocals... it sends chills.
2:10 IT'S OKAY! The nuns ran away to be there...
Dance Macabre!!!
No, it's Mary on a Cross
Saw them last summer, it's so spectacular live! Please react to Mummy Dust 🤘🖤
Someone said years ago that ghost sounds like Abba meets black sabbath. And that's fucking accurate
More Ghost 😎🔥😎🔥
Tony Schiavone in a Ghost concert: It's Stiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig
Gotta subscribe, hoping for more Ghost! 🙂Cheers from Sweden!
New Nightwish is out today!
The Amazing part is this is probably the 20th+ best song by Ghost....Best rabbit hole ever!
Definitely listen to Call Me Little Sunshine!!! I love the Jimmy Kimmel live version.😍😍🖤🖤 Papa’s outfit (his Papal robes) in that is 🤌🏻🫶🏻😍🖤
one of the rare bands that I tend to find better live then on studio
Spoiler for ghoul identities: The main singers on this song are Tobias Forge (the lead singer), Justin "Jutty" Taylor (seen singing the longer held out note toward the end while slinging a guitar), and Dylan "Mad Gallica" Louise (who does the majority of background vocals and also plays the keyboard).
He's also singing in a mask
Didn't see it in your library but have you done "Take hold of the flame" by Queensryche. Live in Japan. Probably one of the best vocal performances live. 🤘🤘🤘
Not yet...
Steve Wozniak looks alike also the voice!
Seen people cover other things, but some extra trivia:
His speaking voice is strictly him playing a character. I've always considered it a bit of a hokey transyvalanian accent. You can find clips of him speaking out of character in interviews and he sounds way different.
Its all for theater. (Although, sometimes that theater comes with actual commentary on politics and religion)
nice
Listen to Faith and Rats and call me little sunshine!
I describe Ghost 2 ways -
1. ABBA & Black Sabbath had a baby and in grew up listening to Def Leppard.
2. I imagine Ghost to be like a Halloween episode of GLEE where the song and dance club dresses up and pays homage to spooky heavy metal bands.
Welcome to the world of Ghost.
Spillways music video : you won't regret it. Ghost is the best rock group of the 21st century.
Ghost are great!
Bro reaction to next song ghost - rats oficial video plis
I concur. That’s my favorite song. Period.
Song about drugs , speeding together , bruising, riding high etc
The singer Tobias is is the mastermind and does all the musical writing and the idea, story, of Ghost. The rest of the band is paid players called "ghouls". The masks hide their identity so can be easily replaced, there was some legal drama before when former players claimed that they want a bigger cut of the income. I don´t blame Tobias, its 100% his creativity that created everything.
Ghost is a parody "Satanic" band. The front man is Swedish musician Tobias Forge. The rest of the band is anonymous "nameless ghouls". Tobias is the primary creative force in the band. The other members are not permanent and there is a separate studio and tour band. The lore is that they represent an underground satanic church that spreads their dogma and aspirations of world domination through the band. They are often blundering and silly. The leader of the band is "Papa Emeritis" of which there have been 4 different incarnations. Basically each album or so, the current front man is killed off and a new one, with new face paint, mask, mannerisms, and costume is introduced. It is still Tobias underneath.
they aren't anonymous at all lmao
0:57
"Is That Sting?"
No, it most certainly isn't Sting
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Nuns in the audience lol.
That woman legit looks like Talyor Swift. You're probably the first reactor I've seen make that reference, but every time I see this video I think the same thing.
🔥🤘😜🔥
it's like asking why Kiss dressed up, or Slipknot etc :P
Yes,only a little annoying you think?
Sigh.
Please dig for their older stuff
I think that stings make up was inspired by the crow 🐦⬛ so it’s very possible that he’s just a gothic wrestler
Reacts to ghost year zero please 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Great band! Also check out another cool Swedish band, THE HIVES!
The costume earlier used to be way cooler.
In theory you would imagine a “satanic” band to be death metal or something like that but I guess if Satan were clever, he could catch more flies with honey. Or at least that is basically the gimmick.
I’d recommend Cirice. More heavy with Tobias’ ultra clean tone. An amazing song
Square Hammer🤘
Hi, I dont either understand why the musicians have "frog hats"?! Björn anonymonas?
They're referred to as Ghoul masks. There have been multiple different versions over the years. If the last part of your comment is wondering as to whether or not they're entirely anonymous, the answer is no. We know the identities of all the ghouls at this point 🫶
Yeah wow this is a very deep and complex rabbit hole, although one very worth exploring, and your questions are not so easily answered. As far as if the lead singer always looks this way, well kinda at least when he's playing this character or Papa version. As far as do they always sound this way, well no not really they are very diverse I'd suggest just checking out the music. The simple answer is the one constant in Ghost is that it is always Tobias and everything about Ghost is basically all Tobias. Tobias was frontman for several other bands, under other stage names and varying genres, most notably the death metal band Repugnant and the pop group Subdivision. In Ghost Tobias always intended to keep his identity concealed however he was outed once a lawsuit was brought against him by some of the nameless ghouls over the fact that all royalties went to Tobias since he WAS Ghost and all other members were just hired musicians on a rotating basis. Despite all of this Ghost is really more about the lore and the music and not the reality or the actual musicians or their careers....unless of course you're Tobias! Loudwire named Tobias the metal artist of the decade in the 2010's. More recently Ghost was nominated for another grammy for their cover of Iron Maiden's Phantom of the Opera ultimately losing out to Metallica. This is ironic since James Hetfield has publicly come out as a big fan of Tobias and Ghost and was responsible for Metallica becoming such huge supporters of the band. Ghost has also provided the main songs for two recently popular horror movies in Halloween Kills and Insidious The Red Door. And speaking of movies Ghost has their first movie Rite Here Rite Now, directed by Tobias, showing in theaters as we speak.
One thing, the movie is not showing yet, but just next month. And next it's Subvision and not Subdivision.
@@carolinap50 You're absolutely correct. My mistake.
No pedo creer que no sepa fe GHOST
Swedish 🇸🇪 goth 🦇sting 🦂 lol 😂
He’s a satanic parody of the Catholic Church. That’s he’s the satanic pope called “Papa Emeritus” and they’re demons called “nameless ghouls”. I could be fudging up a detail or two but that’s pretty much the jist of the band and their aesthetic.
The character says its a song hes pappa wrote. Another character. So it's going back in time as old song but it's new. Genius
So listen to others song it's more metal
you need to watch more more more you seen nothing yet or herd nothing yet
I mean it definitely wasnt Taylor Swift in the crowd but actually James Hetfield from Metallica is a huge fan of Ghost :D
Its a mask he wears
He wears a painted prosthetic mask.
🤔 Hmmm..dude, have you been living under a rock or something. Maybe you just don't keep up on cool bands, but Ghost has been around for years. I myself discovered them back in 2017, with the song "Square Hammer". By the way, they won a Grammy, for the song "Cirice"....They have gotten huge, and fanbase is growing all the time.
So you are saying you never heard of a band that won grammies? 🤔
Correct
