    This is the best tutorial on goalkicks on youtube. Especially that "bend the knee part". It helped a lot. Other tutorials are like "take a few steps back run and kick the ball". This step by step analysis helps with finding what mistakes you make a lot better.

    Soooo helpful! I figured out why I have so much trouble getting the ball past the half line and it is because like you said new/young players tend to try to strike the ball as hard as possible which is what I do and also I have my plant foot way too close to the ball which is why I don't get much elevation. Thank you so much, this helps a bunch. My soccer high school varsity team is 0-10 right now so we could use some damn help. My coach said that I will probably end up getting honorable mention which is a reward in which I was selected by other teams' coaches. Now just imagine if I get my technique right :) Thank you so much once again.

    Thank you for making this video. My 8YO son had a lot of trouble getting height on his goal kicks and corner kicks. We worked and worked, and maybe 20% got enough elevation to clear players in the way. His coaches just told him to "lean back," and while that's important, it didn't help. Your tip to move the plant foot further away from the ball completely solved the issue. Now 90% or more of his goal/corner kicks get good elevation. I watched multiple goal kick videos looking for help and yours was the only one to discuss the wider distance for the plant foot.

    just remember, it takes time and lots of training to get it right, so make sure you're patient and don't expect perfect results right from the beginning.

    Excellent! is about the technique, I was totally wrong thinking it was about how hard you kick the ball. THANKS!

    I think you could have got the same message across in 3 minutes but it was detailed and thorough. I like how you mentioned the difference between a shooting technique (knee over the ball, low hard strike) and a lobbing technique (knee wide and behind, lofty strike), it makes it easier to identify the intentions of each kick.

    Thanks a lot for the video. Showed me my main problem has always been the wrong technique rather than lack of ability at taking them.
    This afternoon I went down to the local field and practiced for an hour trying to kick the ball over the goal from just inside the penalty area using you technique. I got decent height and cleared the bar with almost every one. I'm amazed at how easy it is with the correct technique.
    Thanks a lot for the video. I will practice extensively over summer now. :)

    yes, the cinder field is very difficult to deal with in many ways...the one thing you might me able to do is when you put the ball down for a goalkick, see if you can scrape away a bit of the cinder just behind the ball where your foot will be striking the ball. It's kind of like when you're playing on grass and you press down the grass right behind the ball so you don't catch your toe in the grass. It's the same idea, but try and scrape away a bit of the cinder so there's less behind the ball

    the big key is to really make sure that you are bending at the knee on your plant leg. this will allow you to get your hips lower to the ground, which will allow you to get your foot more underneath the curvature of the ball. The other big issue you have to concentrate on is making sure that the toe on the kicking foot is pointed down towards the ground, but away from the body. this way, you are striking the ball with the laces of the shoe as well as a part of the inside of the foot.

    For years i couldn't kick, then i found this vid! I watch it ever few months for a refresher course. I have since learned that leaning to the left (for right foot) helps me to get curl when hitting to the left wing, throwing the opposition the other way giving my winger a seconds advantage. It's also good for pinning it straight, almost like knuckle balling. Just find the technique that suits you, everyone is different!

    This will actually really help. I've spent 6 or 7 years as a young goalie and until recently I started doing my own research for goal keepers. I never got good instructive advice since it was just a house league, and since I'm moving up to a competitive league I need to get better. This really helps since I was never able to take longer shots and I never knew why. Thank you so much!

    That's what I tried to do every goal kick...hit the ball as hard as I can through my whole season and it didn't just work hard! And now thanks to you I'm doing very well with my goalkicks (practising), I'm from Malta and coaches tell me that I'm good in every part...but I don't take goalkicks as I didn't know how to take them! But now I got better :) I made my debut also at 17 years of age in the Maltese Premier League for Msida Saint Joseph this season :) Thanks so much for the tip!

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

    @tomdamann
    try starting your approach a bit farther to the left than you currently are. This should help with the ball curving to the left. As for making contact with the end of your foot, you are correct - it is generally a problem with the plant foot (left) being placed too far behind the ball. You will need to move in forward by 1-2 inches.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

    yes, this is a very common issue and fortunately, there is a pretty easy answer. the reason this is happening is because you are standing too high in your set position and when you are stepping with your nearest foot to the ball, your shoulders are too high, which is causing you to dive on a higher plane. If you bend your knees more in your set position and when you step to dive, make sure that your shoulders are lower to the ground as you begin to push through, it should begin to help.

    I would have to say from personal experience, that looking for a spot that "seems" to be a bit elevated can help a bit as well. Even if it is just a placebo but in pressurized situations it can give you that bit of extra peace of mind.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

    the astro is a bit tougher to take goalkicks off of..the key to it is to make sure you're really bending your knee on the plant leg so you can get under the ball with the kicking foot. The ball doesn't quite sit up as it normally would with the regualar grass and it makes things tough. I had a very difficult time learning to kick off of artificial pitches when I was young as well. It took me quite a few years to get it right.

    Brian, thanks for the Vid. I haven't played competitive in a while and my goal kicks were always my achilles heel. Had a game today my 1st kick I visualised everything you said 6 yards back couple strides to the left slow run up bent planted knee! Boom loft in my kicks into a slight wind. Only reached the centre circle but a big improvement. Everyone of them was the exact same. Can't thank you enough and you'll be in my head every goal kick for the rest of my life. Just need to add more distance

    if you can get it to half field as a 14 year-old, you're doing well. As long as you're able to get the ball elevated into the air, keep using your technique.
    As long as it is working for you and you're getting the results that you need.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  13 років тому

    @gowpft
    the height issue is either one of two things - 1) you might not be bending at the knee enough on your plant leg, which is hampering your ability to fuly get your kicking foot underneath the bottom curvature of the ball, or 2) you're just not leaning back enough from the waist up. Without seeing you kick a ball, it's impossible for me to tell either way. As for what age I started to really get a hold on my goalkicks? I would say about 15-16 years old.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  14 років тому

    @rlml94
    the backspin itself doesn't help the ball lift into the air, but it is a sign that the goalkeeper used the correct technique in terms of the angle of both his kicking foot and the angle of his hips and shoulders in relation to the ball at the moment of contact. You want your goalkick to have backspin, but that isn't what helps increase the elevation. Leaning back is what helps create the elevation in the goalkick.

    when you are approaching the ball from a longer distance, are you running towards it, or are you walking towards it. Make sure that you are not approaching the ball fast, as this will throw off your balance and more importantly your timing. Stand back 4-5 yards and just walk to the ball during your approach. See if you can hit it as cleanly as you are hoping for.

    excellant question and a common problem for young kids who are as tall as you are. The most impostant idea to remember is that you must really lower your center of gravity (your hips) while you're in your set postion. You do this by bending more at the knees. If you're having problems getting low, chances are you're standing "too tall". Get your hips and your ass lower to the ground. The next issue is to make sure your hands are "driving" down to the ball as opposed to "falling" down.

  • @josedanielherrera7115
    @josedanielherrera7115 11 років тому

    You CAN approach the ball straight, but you will not be able to tilt your foot to the outside. If your ankle is flexible enough, you should be able to take the goal kick like a strike (toe down, shoulders square). This gets the ball into an area quicker, but takes more power to do so. It also allows you to slightly bend the ball to the right or left if you strike the ball off center (.5-1cm off center). It also allows you to knuckle the ball if you raise your knee as you strike (top spin).

    I myself am only 5ft 8" so i find that higher shots are sometimes hard to get to, but overhand saves have become more applicable with that, and i also find that as a smaller keeper, my reactions to shots into the corners are far better than those of taller keepers, our reactions usually compensate for lack of height. What it does sometimes affect is confidence in coming for the high ball, but once you have that nailed down, shorter keepers can often be just as good!

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  15 років тому

    no problem...the height issue is happening because you're not quite bending enough at the knee on your plant leg. Bend more at your knee. This will help get your kicking foot more underneath the ball. The curving of the ball can be fixed by coming at a slightly bigger angle when you approach. It sounds like right now, you're approaching the ball from too straight an angle. Move a foot or so further to the side of the ball when you start your approach.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  16 років тому

    don't go into it fast, take your time moving into it. Also, make sure you're coming at a good angle and distance. Don't get frustrated....just keep going. It will come to you over the course of many repititions. This is part of working the skill set. some skill sets will come to you easier, and some will take more time to figure out. It's alright. Just keep working.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  16 років тому

    taping your ankles will help if you have a damaged or weak ankle. if not, it won't really help at all. It is important to have shoes that are in good condition. It can make a huge difference not just on goal kicks, but just in the regular play of a game. I wouldn't recommend one brand over another, because there are a handful of brands that have good shoes. It's more about what you're comfortable with. You should try an number of different types and see what feels the best on your feet.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  14 років тому

    @BigEffnCan
    The technique isn't any different. The thing you just have to concentrate on a little bit more is making sure that you bend enough on the plant leg, because the ball doesn't sit up quite as high on turf as it does on grass. That extra 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch is a very big deal if you're not paying attention, so you have to really be sure that the kicking foot is getting exactly underneath the curve of the ball.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  16 років тому

    believe it or not, the quality of the ball can make a huge difference in terms of the quality of the goalkick. I think you can lose up to maybe 10 yards or so if the ball is bad or if the air pressure isn't correct. See if you can find a better ball and hit 10-15 kicks and see if there's a difference.

    in addition to making sure that you aer bending your plant leg, check two other things that you need for lift as well.
    1) make sure your plant foot isn't too close to the ball, and
    2) make sure that you are leaning slightly back at the time of contact with the ball. The top half of your body, including your head, should be leaning slightly back behind your hips.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

    yes, it is possible. I think for you to be successful goalkeeper will depend on how far along you are both technically and athletically. The only way to really know how good your chances are to be a professional is to speak with a professional goalkeeping coach there in Albania and get his opinion on your potential.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  15 років тому

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  16 років тому

    the body follows the hands, and if the hands are being pushed hard down and to the ball, the body will drive down and to the ball as well. So much of what your body does, starts with how you move your hands and arms. Remember to start from a lower set position as well, though. More bend in the knee.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

    @123soccerkeeper
    without seeing you take a goal kick, it' tough to give you a sure answer, but I would suggest that you try leaning back just a little bit at the torso when making contact with the ball. If you are standing too upright when making contact, it will affect the height, even if your foot is making contact under the ball.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

    @bravekai2010
    a little bit of backspin is good. It means that the rotation speed of your hips and shoulders is correct. The real question is, how much backspin are you getting. If you are getting too much backspin, then your assumption is correct and you are making contact with the ball too much below the center of the ball and will need to come up a centimeter or two. Not much, though, just the lenght of a fingernail or two.

    at the moment, we do not have any DVD's although we are looking into it. As for your foot placement....are you starting you're approach at the right angle? Generally, if the approach doesn't start from the correct angle, it will be difficult to get the foot placement where you want it, which is about a yard from the ball and just slightly behind. check your approach and make sure yo're coming from an angle about 3-4 yards wide of the ball.

    having backspin is good, but if you're having too much it does mean you're striking the ball just a bit too underneath. Try making contact slightly higher on the ball but just a bit...maybe half inch or so. No higher than that. If that doesn't really change the result, let us know and we'll talk about some other possiblities.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping

    leg strentgh is important, but no more so than good clean technique. There really isn't any kind of test done at the professional level to determine whether or not a player has the appropriate leg strength or not. the only thing that's looked at is can you get the ball where the ball needs to go regardless of how thick or skinny your legs are. As for leg presses, that would go more towards your jumping than your kicking. Leg extensions would do more for the kicking aspect in your legs.

  • @stlouisgoalkeeping
    @stlouisgoalkeeping  16 років тому

    i'm going to assume that you kick with your right foot and the ball curves to the left. this will occur usually because your plant foot (left foot) is too close to the ball at the point of contact. That usually happens because your approach is slightly too straight. Try starting from a slightly wider angle when you approach..maybe another yard wide and see if that helps at all.

Your follow through needs to go through with enough force the make sure the energy level is high, but once the ball has left the foot, how far you continue through doesn't seem that improtant to me. that being said, I usually land on the foot I struck the ball with, so my follow through with my kicking leg isn't extremely high because I'm getting ready to land on it.

    how often are you working on your kicks on the training ground after your sessions? I think the training ground is good, because you can work with it without any pressure and you can make little adjustments to the technique or the approach in terms of angle and speed and distance. One other thing I will strongly reccomend is VISUALIZATION. Do some research on sports vizualization and start to use it...it is so helpful you will be amazed.

    there is an element of timing, but the timing will be different for every goalkeeper. You kind of have to work out the timing which is best suitable for yourself. Just make sure you take your time and don't rush up to the ball like you're running. The last two steps or so, should have a little speed, but it's definately not a run of even a jogging speed. It's more like a fast walk.

    no. the technique is the same regardless of the type of shoe you are wearing. Even if you aren't wearing shoes, the technique is the same.

    you could definately us it for a long pass, but I'm not sure how effective it would be for a corner kick, as you would like to drive, or curl those with speed about 8-9 feet above the ground. This kicking technique isn't designed for that result.

    I actually had that same problem when I was young. The key I found out was that I had to bend on my plant leg a little bit more than I was used to.

    You can just apply. You don't have to be recommended or anything like that. It's basically you just pay for 8 or 16 training sessions or at time.

    make sure to use a small ball or even a beach ball about the size of a size 3 or 4 soccer ball. Let us know how it works out for him.

    anytime you find the ball spinning to the left side, it usually happens because your left foot is too close to the ball. You will need to move it sightly wider of the ball. Also, form watching the video, it appears as if you are not bending quite enough at the knee on your left leg. This will cause the ball not to reach quite the height that you would like in order for the ball to reach the midfield area. Can you also please film your approach up to the ball so I can see.

    yeah, it just kind of depends on your body type and approach angle. Just make sure that you are getting the lift that you need and it won't be a big deal.
