    I booked a hotel with a no cancellation policy and a few weeks later found the same hotel significantly cheaper for the date I was staying. I got on the phone with Amex and the rep put me on hold, called the hotel manager, and got them to cancel the reservation so I could re-book at the lower price. Amex customer service really is top tier.

    I bought a computer monitor from Amazon, after 45 days of purchase, I found out that the audio was not working in the monitor. I talked to Amazon, they gave me an option to return it, even after the return period was over. But since I needed a monitor all the time for my work, I told them I need the monitor all the time, so if they could send an replacement & collect the faulty. They couldn’t do that, so they refunded me 20% of the price of monitor & let me keep the monitor. Still, the issue remained, I can’t get the monitor repaired for the amount amazon gave me, hence I filed purchase protection with Amex. I couldn’t believe what happened next morning, they credited the full amount of the monitor to my card, even though I mentioned that I already have 20% from Amazon, without asking for any proof!!
    No wonder Amex is the top player in credit card game!

    Unless I missed it I did not hear a word about the extended warranty benefits. I have literally saved hundreds of dollars over the years. Amex Gold will double the manufactures warranty up to 1 additional year if the item you purchase has a warranty of 5 years or less. If you purchase an extended warranty for an appliance the extra year is added on AFTER the extended warranty ends provided that the extended warranty is for 5 years or less. So you could have an appliance covered for 6 years!

    If John keeps advertising the secrets of the return protection, that benefit will mysteriously disappear.
    The special offers are great to keep an eye on. I always whenever I am going to make a big purchase (or at least anything I would classify as non-essential). The problem though is 99% of the time they are for very niche companies/brands. And then when there is a good one for say like Walmart, its only if you purchase through the website and not in store. Which may not always be a viable option. Definitely worth a few minutes checking out though since you never know 🤷‍♂️

      Based on what I’ve read, there isn’t much of a difference, because there is no preset spending limit. In other words, AmEx has nothing to report in terms of credit utilization. That being said, the balance alone may still get reported, so there’s certainly no harm in paying it down if you can before the statement closes.

    • @antman674
      @antman674 Рік тому +5

      I can understand how on the surface it may not make much sense. I will try to help clarify...
      With points the whole idea is that you can leverage all your earned points when you go to redeem them (or transfer them) so that they can potentially be worth more than their face value (face value meaning roughly 1c per point, which is pretty standard). But that pertains more to travel redemptions such as hotels and airfare. If you want to redeem your points for cash, you typically will get less than 1c per point. So points cards are really geared more toward travel.
      With a cashback card, you get straight cash back redeemable at whatever percentage the card has listed. i.e. 3% = 3c back per dollar spent. Sometimes there will be some travel redemption options for cashback cards, but there usually isnt any way to leverage them for higher redemption rates like you can with points.
      Hope that helps!

    Hey John, Love your videos, very informative, big fan, please keep up the good work. So I've been considering applying for the AMEX Gold Card and I find myself torn between two offers. The first one is through referral links, which offers a reward of 90,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first six months. The second one is a deal from Resy, where I would earn 75,000 Membership points after spending the same amount in the same timeframe, and also receive a 20% statement credit on restaurant purchases, potentially amounting to $250 back in my first year of Card Membership. I'm under the impression that this $250 could be viewed as the equivalent of an extra 25,000 points, making it a total of 100,000 reward points. So, I'm essentially comparing a straightforward reward of 90,000 points with no conditions, to a potentially larger but conditional reward of 100,000 points. I'm keen to hear your thoughts on whether I'm interpreting these offers correctly and which one you think might be more advantageous for me.

    • @iTheRealAK
      @iTheRealAK Рік тому

      For me, this is straight forward maths. I’d definitely pick the Resy offer. I’m planning on doing the same as I’m in the same boat as you

    • @adrianescalante8313
      @adrianescalante8313 Рік тому +1

      Thanks for bringing this Resy offer to my attention!
      At first glance, the “extra” work required to receive the $250 bonus didn’t seem appealing. However, it’s really just spending $1250 within that first year of card membership to get the $250. Additionally, spending $1250 at restaurants would earn you 4x on points and is equivalent to 5k points.
      One thing to consider is what the 15k points could get you if you are considering transfer partners and transfer bonuses (sometimes up to 30%).

    • @iTheRealAK
      @iTheRealAK Рік тому

      Next time buy your airpods from costco, I have no joke bought returned 8 pairs of airpods because buttons stopped working, water damage, or because they released new ones with new features.

    Is it worth it if I don’t travel ? The main thing we spend money on is around $15,000 a year on groceries and $3,000 on gas . Prolly another $8k on Amazon

    The price match does not always work. There are several exclusions. I just went through this while booking a Vegas trip. They won't match FHR or HC bookings.

    Does the hotel price match also work for flights booked on Amex as well if I find them cheaper elsewhere?

  • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial

    There are many reasons to love the Amex Gold card, but it's definitely not a card for everyone. Just be sure to make sure you'll naturally get positive value from the credits on this card and that you want to use your Amex MR points for travel and then enjoy these added benefits alongside that! Great video once again John!

    If someone comes to you and offers you a year of $240 prepaid food credit structured this way, how much would you pay? $75? $100?

    • @isaacnava9364
      @isaacnava9364 Рік тому

      Just for $240, probably wouldn't take it. But for 90,000 MR points it'd definitely pay 200-300. Plus purchase protection, fraud prevention etc... definitely worth it

    • @ctcristo
      @ctcristo Рік тому

      @@isaacnava9364 I have the card. But let's be honest the reason you get it is the SUB. Let's not pretend the $240 split into increments of $10 per month is worth anywhere close to the face value. These coupon books are just hard to get good value out of.

    • @isaacnava9364
      @isaacnava9364 Рік тому

      Maybe to you, but the $10 credits are extremely easy for me to use. Paired with the $15 credit from the Plat each month I've gotten a few days worth of meals with the credits.

    How do you think through this decision? Get 3X on dining with Chase Sapphire Reserve, and redeem those points for travel at 1.5X, versus dining out at 4X on the Gold Card? It seems the CSR would be the better dining card. Where is my thinking off?

    • @jonathanlosa399
      @jonathanlosa399 Рік тому +2

      Chase is theoretically better if you plan to redeem for cash or on the portal. But if you transfer out to partners, whichnis what most credit hobbyists do, then they both transfer out at 1:1. In that scenario 4x is always more than 3x.

    • @johnsfinancetips
      @johnsfinancetips  Рік тому +1

      That's a great question. For me personally it's where I think I want the points to be used. Chase I transfer to Hyatt and Amex to flight partners. So in my situation I use both and lean on one when I need points on a particular program

    • @anthonygardner400
      @anthonygardner400 Рік тому

      @@johnsfinancetips Thanks. That’s what I do as well. When I’m trying to build up Hyatt points, I use the 4.5X CSR redemption, and when I want Delta miles (I live in a Delta hub city), I use the 4X Amex redemption.
