Leah, you’re my hero! My husband passed away and left a shop full of intimidating tools but you have taught me so much I spent the summer building a chicken coop! It’s not perfect but I’m kinda proud of myself for finishing it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Back for a reminder, and I just want to say: when you see a person with bandaids on their fingers, you know they actually work for a living, and aren't just there for decoration. 😉 Those are the ones that you can trust!
As for the chisel work, she's absolutely correct to just work to the middle from the outside. And the protection with a scrap of wood is also dead on. Those kinds of things I know already. I just needed a reminder on the center line maker, and this was the first video I knew she used it in. 🙂

I love all your videos! You have a way with teaching. I've been a woodworker since I was a little girl in my dad's shop.
These are great vids for homeowners . Next thing you know they go to buy all the tools needed and realize how much everything costs to get these things done . For example , blades , fasteners , trips to the store , set up , demo , remove the demo , all takes time ...more than most know . Who s with me ? Anyone who does remodeling or anything knows there s a lot of things to consider , especially when the homeowner is asking for something ridiculous
It boggles the mind how anyone could Thumbs Down your insightful, informative, and well made videos that help so many.

I have a jig i made at home for my router, it's perfect for stuff like this. Just make the reference lines, then line the jig up and use your router like a planer, inching down a pass at a time. But it's always great to show different approaches to the same result with different tools. Never know when you'll be shorthanded of a specialized tool :)

Leah, I'll keep this short and to the point.....YOU ROCK!
This was my first joint used in making shoji panels for the master bedroom window years ago. Multiple curtains, vertical blinds and mini blinds have come and gone but the shoji still in good use. At the time I only had basic hand tools like a back saw with a cheap wood miter box, chisel, wood glue and a manual staple gun.
Half lap and corner laps for exterior gates for the win !

I've been making corner lap joints to make a gate. I will say it took me some time to learn how to chisel out a decent flat surface. I'm a lot better than when I started. Just expect a learning curve as to familiarize with the tools and technique.

I use this type of joint when I make curio display cases for my vintage lighter collection, very simple joint to make and gives a nice clean, flat face to the project.

I am about to build some new steps for my home and will remember this since I have a saw to cut the wood, and can do this myself. I also have a nice set of chisels also which is nice and sharp, which I can use to make the cuts and clean up the joints with. Thanks so much for showing us this and letting us know that anyone can work with wood like you showed here.

hey jane, maybe you can make a series of dvds of all the segments you've made about the tools you talked about. it be great for students who have never picked up a tool in his/her life but just doesnt know where to start. or like me who likes to learn more about the tool im using and use it better. tape measure was one, carpenter pencil, and the framing or combo square. great vids. put all segments into a dvd or two, i just may purchase one set.
