Pig Destroyer- Book Burner ALBUM REVIEW
Вставка

Though the latest effort from Pig Destroyer is undeniably an all-out riff fest, I'm not feeling the same thrilling level of intensity I typically enjoy from this genre in general.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

FAV TRACKS: THE UNDERGROUND MAN, MACHIAVELLIAN, WHITE LADY, KAMIKAZE HEART, TOTALED, DIRTY KNIFE, BURNING PALM
(Note: Burning Palm is one of the few tracks with a breakdown at the end of it that I think is spectacular, which is mostly due to Jarvis' tight double bass work on that part of the track. NICEEEEE!)
LEAST FAV TRACK: BALTIMORE STRANGLER
PIG DESTROYER- BOOK BURNER / RELAPSE / 2012 / GRINDCORE, MOSH RIFFS AND MOSH RIFFS AND MOSH RIFFS
6/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?

Grindcore does not have to be pure extremity and noise to be good, obviously pd were going for a more groovy, thick sound and i don't see why thats a bad thing.
Everything pig destroyer makes is a 10
Pig destroyer is better than the Beatles, and I will die on this hill
The boi said "piss heart", confusing himself with sourheart, but I believe my good melon, it is called piss angel...
I know...
You're welcome...
... I'm sorry...
Terrifyer is their best album
+creepypaste Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you
Jake Hall Prowler in the Yard I think, but i don't know much about any of their other work.
HeavyProfessor definately prowler, but terrifyer is also great, just a little groovier and more over produced imo
creepypaste probably, but Prowler is on par.
Because they're both equally amazing and important, I think what it all comes down to is which one fits your taste more than the other.
I wanna see you review some Agoraphobic Nosebleed
I completly agree. But he should also review the split of agoraphobic nosebleed and insect warfare. They are both absolutly devastading and are, with pig destroyer, my absolut favourit grindcore bands.
I am the Void He doesn't usually talk about or even buy splits; he mentioned why somewhere but I can't recall the reason. The only splits I've heard him mention are Code Orange Kids/Full of Hell and ACxDC/Magnum Force/Sex Prisoner.
Bastard Species that split is so fucking killer. one of the best in the genre
Phantom Limb will probably go down as Pig Destroyer's masterpiece, but this album was up there. There was some great riffage in this one.
John Doe I'd say PxDx's masterpiece is gonna go down as Prowler in the Yard, if not that then Terrifyer. Those are the ones that innovated in grindcore and also got the best critical and fan responses.
Terrefier is my shit tbh
the production on this album is prime. Probably the best production ive ever heard on ANY grindcore cd.
Thanks for the review, bud. I agree to an extent, but honestly feel that those riffs you didn't care for are what distinguish PD from the rest of the grindcore pack. Many bands can play fast and ferocious, but the infectious riffs on these albums are rare to find in any genre. Hell, I'd listen to any metalcore album if they had riffs as great as these.
Haha Piss Heart
lol piss heart
Did he just say "Valley of Geezers"? 😂😂😂😂
Disagree. This album kicks ass. 9/10. People say Phantom Limb is pretty fantastic, but honestly I didn't dig it that much. Then again, I haven't listened to it as much. Terrifyer is tops for me, with Book Burner and Prowler in the Yard battling for second (it depends on the day).
EDIT: I've had time to think. That was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. 8/10. Still kicks ass.
I think prowler in the yard is just about the perfect whole in grindcore. everything from the track arangment, lyrics, layout, the little story about sitting in his car watching her silhouette in the window, to the story that bookends the album in that Steven hawking robot voice. everything.
If you like this give the previous album, "Phantom Limb", a shot. To me, that's when they really started bringing in the death metal influence while still keeping the aggression, violence, and brutality of their grind roots. And the groove sections are absolutely killer.
He won't. Not sure why he decided to do this. Probably something in the algorithm. If he appreciated their work, he would've looked into it to any degree or decided it wasn't his thing and avoid it, which would be totally ok as well
I would encourage anyone here to go listen to prowler in the yard and/or terrifyer and listen to the lyrics and instrumentation and pick up that its just some vacuous competition in spookiness and aggression. Im not oarucularly fond of phantom limb, but id never just gloss over the amazing work done on their earlier releases. Also, his name's Scott Hull.
Question: I'm not much of a metal fan, what's the difference between grindcore and metalcore?
A lot
I don't really listen to much if really any of either. But grindcore is very fast, lots of blast beats and stuff. Metalcore having a lot of singing as well as what I guess you could call more regular harsh vocals, not as fast as grind
Grindcore is metal and metalcore is not metal, simple.
Bongripper didn't suck.
I think someone else could answer your question much better than I, but I'll take a shot: for me modern grindcore takes on an absolutely aggressive stance, fast, vitriolic, some bands take their extreme themes to politics or violence. In a sense I think grindcore was born out of guys who lacked the musicianship (or the will, really) to play really complex metal (which was unanimous in the 70s/80s) and wanted metal to gravitate more towards the abrasiveness of punk rock's sound and attitude;
The image of ant on a tea cup ride slowly turning with with an unimpressed face cracked me up.
I didn't care for this that much when it forced came out. Now I can't remember why, it's pretty epic. And I don't mean epic in a "Kony 2015 dis hunger shades ov gangnam style epic", it's. I. You know, uh. it's pretty great.
Light to decent 8 for me. I will agree that the album doesn't accomplish a whole lot with it's "all out riff fest" approach but I think that approach works pretty well when we're just talking about a 30 minute slab of grindcore, if this was a 50 minute album I think it would be a problem. When I listen to this it gets my blood pumping and makes me want to get up and break all the shit in my room so I think the band did their job.
Toxic Holocaust - Conjure and Conquer in the back? Pig Destroyer review? You just made my day, sir.
How about the new Raveonettes record? great indie pop/rock album according to me, but I would love to hear your opinion :)
Tim Hecker & Daniel Lopatin - Instrumental Tourist
You can look at it as Pig Destroyer's Black Album. I wasn't even close to being a grindcore fan until I heard this. It was the gateway album for me. After listening to, and loving, this album I went to Prowler In the Yard, Terrifyer, and Head Cage. Now I'm checking out Nasum. This album may be more easily accessible but goddamn....tell me it isn't hard as fuck.
I didn't love it, but I definitely really really liked it and I'd give it a 6 or 7 myself. I see the riffs as a continuation of Scott Hull's turn away from straight ahead grind and into a more groovy writing style. See Agoraphobic Nosebleed's "Domestic Powerviolence" or the last song on "Make a Joyful Noise" for more context. My only real gripe with the album is that it doesn't have the same raw anger. There's still raw pure anger there, I just think it's coming from a different place.
He Can you Review Deltron 3030? i know it's old but there's a new album on the way and you didnt review the old one yet.
Do Dying Fetus
Jake Bugg, Paul Banks, Trash Talk, Black Moth Super Rainbow
Anthony, have you decided not to review Coheed & Cambria? I know you were on the fence about it, and I'd like to hear what you thought of it.
I put this on the other night....and forgot I was listening to it, nothing on the record reached out and grabbed me out of my distraction...I can't rate it as I haven't sat and listened to it intently yet, but the fact that the record got over without anything that spoke to me, is disheartening.
How can you so candidly reference prowler and terrifyer and then talk about pining for a thrill seek???? It's been twenty years and I've never heard grindcore albums shake me to my core like those. Why start with book burner?? So weird. Why, melon?
Review Lindstrom - Smalhans, it's only 6 track album, but man, it will make you dance ..
I really love it. I do agree with some of the description that it's more riff oriented and not grind-core. I love the riffs so it didn't bother me. Prowler and Terrifyer are my two favs but I love the albums for the "riffs" that Scott pumps out during the blast of noise. I don't find his riffs on bookburner tacked on or basic at all. That's where I disagree with the review.
This album deserves 9/10. The drums kill it on this album. The guitars are fantastic although its more distorted than their previous albums. The vocals right up there dude. Best album is terrifyer. Get this for the drums as the drumming is so much more complex than their previous releases.
Brian Harvey is a much more original sounding drummer than Adam Jarvis.
Maybe, but you should compare the drum kits used by the two drummers. The drum kit on the book burner album can produce more sounds than the one used on terrifyer. I think they are both great drummers anyway.
I honestly thought the generic mosh friendly bits still very well done, just recently getting into grindcore and i can't help but feel, though watered down, they did not pull any punches with the grooves, and they kinda fix the few gripes I have with grindcore in general.
Definitely a good album for a pleb like me.
I would love to hear your opinion on Parkway Drive's new album, Atlas.
You should review the new Why? record! amirite? Good stuff maybe. I enjoyed it at least. Also it would be cool if you reviewed Time by Wintersun.
you describe the vibe of an album so well, i found this very useful .
Piss Heart... Piss Angel? Lol
noo way.... just picked up Prowler in the Yard the other day after yeeeeeeeeaaaaars! Didn't even know thye had a new one out. Nioce one Fantano!
Bah way not to mention where Jarvis is originally from, Misery Index is one of the best bands making death metal today.
Also, I'm pretty sure Pig Destroyer is from VA.
I think you need to go into this album not expecting wonderful growth and nuance. You need to go to this album to get the basic meat and potatoes of nasty brutal blast riffs. The songs are all short and to the point. No fucking around trying be all artsy and shit. Just straight up fuck shit up music. No surprises here; just business. I loved every single minute of it.
PD should go back to the sound in painter of dead girls, that was incredible, and it's not even an LP.
Widowmaker - Dragged Into Sunlight
will you please review some new doomish drone metal again. ie pallbearer
Might I suggest you reviewing an album from the label Non Projects? Specifically, "Acquiescence" by Anenon.
Kamelot - Silverthorn
I don't know, for me it's a toss up between this album and Prowler being my favorite honestly. Book Burner is just pure fucking muscle from beginning to end, with, in my opinion, plenty of nuanced riffs and song structures. Not as eclectic or horrific as Prowler, but definitely harder-hitting. Terrifyer is probably my third favorite, and then Phantom Limb. I couldn't even get all the way through Head Cage, and Explosions In Ward 6 and other early stuff is pretty much just all noise, so yeah.
I am a huge pig destroyer fan and I was definitely unmoved by this album. I was expecting a lot more and it kind of left me disappointed after waiting so long for a new album. I agree with a lot of what you said and this is the first review I have seen that was just not raving about how heavy an album it is.
Hopefully Dragged Into Sunlight doesn't disappoint.
Noisear - "Turbulent Resurgence"
About half as long and twice as good as "Book Burner." It is probably my favorite grindcore album of the year.
As for metalcore today, it's a genre in which not all, but many bands have room for affectation not only with their style or themes but also (way too) many lyrics are about love, personal frustration, seclusion, the last two were always deep into the metal subconscious but in a different sense, metalcore has a more "poetic", but too close to childish, sensibility when it comes to that.
you're on point with this one. while I enjoyed the album, overall it had a "yeah, this is plain ole run-of-the-mill pig destroyer" feel. wasn't particularly inspired.
Graveyard - Lights out
Piss heart? Oh no Fantano, you did noooooot jus' say tha!
Anthony you gotta check out the new Homeboy Sandman, First of a Living Breed.
If not now when? Would be cool :)
Absolutely fantastic in my opinion, but each to their own. How about reviewing the God Seed album when it comes out?
BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW WHATCHYA WAITIN FER?
Y U NO review One Wing by The Chariot? :(
Prowler in the yard is the best album.
I liked the album a lot more personally. Still, good review. Stay classy.
holy shit i had no idea pig destroyer still made music
I personally enjoy this album, although I think there's still a couple tracks I haven't listened to yet. It does seem like it feel just barely short of my expectations, but I hyped myself up quite a bit.
lol this is the best fucking metal/punk album of 2012 IMO, better than Terrifyer, destroys Limb, begins to give prowler a run for it's money
All the band members have regular full time jobs and tour rarely. Maybe they recorded it to reach a broader metal audience that would backlog their gnarlier earlier records? Just a thought. Some of their early shit is so hard to approach if you find the wrong song. This album was tits. Phantom was great for me, prowler and terrifyer have the best ever songs but not the best albums.
GAZA - No Absolutes in Human Suffering
Please review the new Titus and please say you like it even if you don't because it will make me smile.
Bodega Bamz - Strictly For My Papiz
I did not like it all. I really don't think they'll ever top Terrifyer, Prowler, or Natasha.
youngdef created the page and he gave the page to me to put up his videos and music because he couldnt get into the page anymore on his laptop idk y but naw im different dude just on his old page
The new Bat For Lashes! What you waiting for?!
I love it when you say "meat and potatoes".
Wintersun's Time I
I swear to gawd anthony
Hi Anthony, I'd love to hear your opinion on Pinback's 'Information Retrieved'
Wintersun - Time I
Why no mention of a key part of Pig Destroyer..THE LYRICS!! Hayes is an amazing wordsmith not just in grind but really in any genre and although some would argue the lyrics in this album weren't up to par with Prowler I believe they are still head and shoulder above their peers...just my thoughts(agreed about the riffs though):)
yesss, stoked that you did something i requested!!! love this album.
I am going to be totally honest, I really did not like this album at all. I was incredibly disappointed with it, and I am one who considers Pig Destroyer one of the best in their genre. I am really part of the minority with this one. But eh, opinions are opinions.
Personally I loved this album, sure its not another Prowler, but it shouldn't be, this album sounds very well produced but it still fells raw, those badass riffs make my blood start pumping, its still grindcore, its an excellent album
Thanks for the review! I really enjoyed this LP, but you are right they changed up a little bit, but I think they are evolving.
BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW. DEAR LORD.
Neurosis - Honor Found in Decay
Balmorhea - Stranger... still.
Code Orange Kids 'Love Is Love//Return To Dust'
I love this album, and although prowler or terrified is what most would refer to as to what PD is, I'd have to say I enjoy this album the most. I agree there is more moshy parts incorporated in book burner but if you love moshy parts and it gets you moving then there's nothing wrong with that.
I agreed with almost everything you said. They just don't have the same fast-paced intense riffing they have on Prowler and especially Phantom. I don't like the moshy riffing either
I love you Fanteezy
Hugh Laurie - Let Them Talk
Can you review the Dethalbum 3? Even though I don't think you'll like it.
i know this doesn't relate to this video but thanks for getting me into mac demarco man..that new album is super cool
What's up with the palms album review G?
What the fuck? How are you going to leave out 38 counts of battery and painter of dead girls. Get your head in the game.
Could you review Diamond Rings Free Dimensional?
glad you reviewed this, dont have my copy yet as its not out in the UK yet, from what ive listened to though, id say this is a fair review.
still a bi of a favourite of mine regardless, going to see them next week!
where is the 90k dance ?
