Floating Deck DIY: How to Apply a Clear Coat for Long-lasting Beauty - Thrift Diving

- Pressure-treated wood had to be stained to protect it, but it must be dry first. I built this DIY deck about 3 months ago on the front of my 16' x 26' "she shed." I've added two coats to protect it, and to keep the natural wood color!

Yes do the gazebo the same. They will compliment each other
Love the finish!!! Let them match!!!😊
Do the same! I like the outcome of your floating deck!
I love the stain Serena, beautiful 💐👏🏽👏🏽❣️
For anyone relatively new to this - 1. Clear coats can protect from water infiltration that causes mold, black discoloration, etc., but not from sun damage that turns the wood a gray color. 2. Most clear coats are made of a solvent and wax. They usually last less than a year but they're cheaper and easy to apply & reapply. 3. If you use an oil product that also contains color, the oil soaks into the wood to replenish and protect it from water and the color is made from mica and other pigment that essentially covers the top layer of the wood like tinted sunscreen to block the sun's damaging rays. 4. The darker the color of an oil based stain, the higher the protection (because they have to include the higher amount of the protective mica/pigment 5. Semi-tranparent and most similar water-based products should really be thought of like paint because they cover up and obscure the wood, but technically offer superior protection (like wearing a shirt vs using sunscreen). You should absolutely try to paint it as thin as possible. Almost everyone ends up dealing with this type of product peeling up from the surface within a few years. 6. There's really no correct answer for what type you should choose because each option has significant downsides. I ended up switching to oil-based because it's easier to put on and dealing with my mom's peeling water-based stained deck was a truly, truly awful experience that i couldn't even fully fix in the end.
I hope this helps someone else since I spent waaay too many hours researching this topic a year ago when attempting to fix my mom's deck
I'm so glad you're doing videos more frequently again. Love them 💕
YAY! So glad you're enjoying them! It's not easy to post so often. But I'm doing my best, and that's the best I can ask for. :) Thank you for following along, Marie!!
I love your channel.Been watching a few years. Next time clear coat or stain each board before you start. You can get the bottom and sides. Everything you do I enjoy in the heart of Texas. Oh yes you are gorgeous
Watch how I built this 4' x 8' floating deck! ua-cam.com/video/MokLD4dArVI/v-deo.htmlsi=xZ6DAm8BjiefdX2-
Hi Serena, I have a larger deck in the back of my house with raw (unprotected) treated wood. I did not realize it right away. I like the natural wood look and have looked all over UA-cam to find the right coating that would keep that look. I finally found something called TWP wood protection that has no color in it at all. I haven’t tried it yet but have to do a lot of prep as it is under an old heritage oak. It has some mildew. I found out how to do this on UA-cam but it needs a bleach treatment first. I’m hoping this works. Love your videos.
Yay! A new video, missed you
Awww, thank you! I've been here! I've been uploading daily, but I think UA-cam hates me now, because no one sees my videos if I post too late in the evening! LOL
This is the first one I’ve watched in months. I just looked through your videos and noticed I’ve missed a lot of them. I don’t think you’re the only one that is struggling with that.
Do the same color on the gazebo. Its beautiful
Same!!❤❤❤❤!
Probably the same color stain.❤❤
Do the same color. That color is beautiful!
Do people ever paint or stain wood before they build the project? You rock btw ❤
The deck looks amazing!! Love your work ❤ I particularly love the color, can you please share the brand name and color you've used?
Wow, you've been busy! LOL!!!
Do the same color. Love the color!
Tfs!
