Meryl’s Miranda is iconic and so layered that it blows my mind. We could go days analysing her character, but she is so much more than a tough boss. She is a perfectionist, a woman in a ruthless corporate world expected to bring lots of profit to the industry and completely aware of constant schemes to bring her down. She can’t be anything less but fierce and detached while doing business, expecting perfection and dedication from everyone, as much as from herself. And yet, Meryl made us see beyond the ruthless facade. She made us see the human, the mother, even glimpses of vulnerability. Andy saw that, too. Even after Andy left in Paris, there’s the connection, the understanding between the older and the younger women. Andy left Miranda and her job in a hasty and unprofessional way, but Miranda gave her an iconic recommendation nontheless. Andy waved at her, affectionately, in the street. That’s why the movie is so much more than the book, for me. It’s much more complex. It shows a professional business woman in power fighting to stay at the top of the merciless game. It also shows a young woman with a lot of potential, trying to find her place in the world, facing a lot of disillusionment but also gaining recognition from the best. Miranda did not crush her dreams in the end. She actually helped her find them. So, yes, this movie is so much more than its playful title suggests. It’s a classic. And whatever method acting Meryl used, it was worth it! Praise to all the cast and crew, the end result is perfection.
Thank you! I don’t understand how some people see Miranda as the villain, when she was just simply doing her job. Being the boss of any company is never easy, but especially with fashion magazines, or any other magazine really. The fashion industry is such a competitive industry, that there’s not time to be soft. If you’re soft, you get eaten and replaced by a tougher person in a blink of an eye. You can never let your guard down. You always have to be thinking 10 steps ahead, otherwise you’re old news by the next morning. And we saw a perfect and clear example of this in the movie when they were trying to replace Miranda behind her back. Of course, she was twice as smarter as they were, and that’s what made her a good boss. Always think ahead and never trust anybody. I also liked that you pointed out her “flaws” which was literally being human (having children, going through a divorce, feeling compassion for Andy, etc). But even through these scenarios, she still put her career in front, and that is why she was so powerful. She put on a mask every morning and did her job.
eh, would have to disagree... Meryl Streep did a good job but the way they wrote Miranda for the movie didn't really make sense. Either she was a decent person who had terrible leadership skills or she was a fearful person holding on to a career by any means necessary to maintain her value....... She doesn't develop anyone in the organization and drives away the person who's portrayed to be the most talented. Don't know, maybe that would actually work in fashion but doubt it would work in may other fields.
@@kheldaryt This was my defense of Miranda Priestly. I concentrated on the facts that are often overseen. Her sharp mind is often seen only through her iconic but cruel verbal dismissal. I last watched it on New Year's Eve with my sister's family and we laughed ourselves silly. So well said, thank you! Patricia Field, who I was introduced to through her amazing work on Absolutely Fabulous, is peerless. Success requires teamwork, and Ms Field's contributions are absolutely remarkable.
I loved Meryl in this, and I'm not one of these people who fawn over all-things-British, but Emily, a total newcomer to Hollywood with this movie, hooked you into the story before Meryl was even shown. If it wasn't for her part and the way she played it, the ying and yang between Meryl and Anne would have never gelled as well. Nobody knew who Emily Blunt was, but the second she adlibbed "no, don't touch it." she had the audience hooked.
I love that the character Emily was played by an actress named Emily because it bonds her with the character even more. I don't know if that was a coincidence or if the script was changed. Also, I've read that Emily Blunt also adlibbed the line "hideous skirt convention" too, which I think is the funniest line in the movie. 😁👍
I would so suck at that job. I would like Nigel's job. Creativity is what drives him. Setting up schedules and planning...Miranda would be missing her flights all the time.

Miranda didn’t try to ingratiate herself because she was already in a position of power, and we see her interacting with underlings rather than people higher up on the hierarchical scale; and, she was pretty willing to smile and be conventionally feminine while she pulled the carpet from under nigel’s feet when she had no other option (or when she was dealing with jacqueline, whom she actually hated, but couldn’t slam, because she was pretty lodged in with her position at Vogue Paris and part of the ‘family’).
@@nonenone4486 she said that everyone calls her Annie irl and only Hollywood started calling her Anne bc she told a casting director to call her that when she was 14 and it stuck and she's hated it every since (lmfaooo).

she's brilliant in this. Her role sort of brings all the other characters together. Its a perfect counter balance and the idea to play it as an English women in her native tongue was genius. ....watched it a million times for her performance alone
Really good film Cool how Emily Blunt would go on to reunite with Meryll in 2 other films(Into The Woods and Mary Poppins Returns),and become Stanley Tucci's sister in law.
I think the very main thing that made this movie work and made it beloved by so many people is that they made the women *actually* be good at their jobs. In the book, Miranda just kind of cruises by and never seems to be doing any important work, and Andy is just plain insufferable. She never really tries. The book is only mediocre, and most of the interest comes from the Anna Wintour thing and wondering what snippets of truth there were. But the movie showing two women who were good at what they did, albeit in different ways, has made sure the movie stood the test of time (somewhat), and was relatable to so many more people.
The book is terrible; Andie is so unlikeable. This is not an adaptation, it's a complete reinvention turning a mediocre novel into an iconic, timeless film.
eh, movie is weak sauce compared to the book..... just an opinion and not trying to bash your take but book actually says something about humanity, movie is idealized girl power drivel. movie is soft and lets everyone off the hook at the end. obviously lots of people in the comments here liked the movie and that's cool. nothing wrong with it, just didn't seem to me like it actually said anything other than confirm people's preexisting thoughts in the end.
Zoom Call - During a Pandemic - groundbreaking! haha! But in seriousness, I love that movie and I dont think another sequel would work, but more for the hardcore fans. But thanks for the interview!
Rachel for this role? oh lord no, she would've been so wrong for it, Annie was perfect Also, no mention to the amazing groundbreaking score and soundtrack? It's a huge part of why the film was such a hit, and there was no consideration for Theodore Shapiro
Honestly, I'm fine with Rachel McAdams in the role. Infact I can imagine other actresses playing Andy than Anne Hathaway but since Anne did a great job at playing it, so no complain again eventhough Rachel would've been great too
ikr? the incomparable Theodore Shapiro! I wish he was acknowledged here. When I watched this movie and heard his masterpiece I suddenly remembered the movie View from the Top, which is equally my all time favorite! And then I realized that he also did the soundtrack/scoring for it! He is a genius! And he created such a masterpiece music to 2 of my most favorite movies of all time. On the other note, I think Anne is already perfect in the movie and I couldn't imagine Rachel on it more so that it would have the same impact as Anne's had she taken the role.
Emily was perfect. I lived in London at the time this movie came out and London was full of 'Emily's'. Ambitous young fashionistas who take everything too seriously and want to work at THAT office or for THAT person.
This is by far my go to movie. Whether I am sad, happy ect. Every character was essential to the story. From the staff rushing to get their comfy shoes on to Miranda demonstrating what sacrifices needed or occur when you have to run a successful business. ❤❤❤❤❤

To
Bruh 😩 trying to get through this but I can’t handle him calling her “Annie” 😹😹
I honestly sat here questioning my own memory... like.. IS it AnnE....or Anne...??? 🤔
@@nonenone4486 she said that everyone calls her Annie irl and only Hollywood started calling her Anne bc she told a casting director to call her that when she was 14 and it stuck and she's hated it every since (lmfaooo).
Annie is her preferred name.
she prefers being called annie 😐
Grateful for everyone who came to this chat. The Devil Wears Prada is one of my very favorite movies, and one of the very, very few that I can watch on repeat without ever tiring.
And bless Adrian for showing some understanding of the Nate backlash.
Emily Blunt is the best thing in this film.
Followed very closely by Stan!
what else would you expect from a goddess?
she's brilliant in this. Her role sort of brings all the other characters together. Its a perfect counter balance and the idea to play it as an English women in her native tongue was genius. ....watched it a million times for her performance alone
@@annetessari1004 it was the first film l saw with her. I'm in love ever since 😂
tbf she's the best thing in every film she's in!! a gem
My mom loves this movie. I literally decided to watch it 2 hours ago and then opened UA-cam and this video was uploaded. Whut !!!
i can't get over this movie, I rewatch it every time it is on
Really good film
Cool how Emily Blunt would go on to reunite with Meryll in 2 other films(Into The Woods and Mary Poppins Returns),and become Stanley Tucci's sister in law.
Agree, it's perfect as-is; no sequel needed
How does this have less than 100k views? THIS IS A TURNING POINT OF CONTEMPORARY CULTURE.
Zoom Call - During a Pandemic - groundbreaking! haha! But in seriousness, I love that movie and I dont think another sequel would work, but more for the hardcore fans. But thanks for the interview!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO SO MUCH, WATCHING IT TODAY!!!!
Rachel for this role? oh lord no, she would've been so wrong for it, Annie was perfect
Also, no mention to the amazing groundbreaking score and soundtrack? It's a huge part of why the film was such a hit, and there was no consideration for Theodore Shapiro
Actually no she would’ve been incredible but Hathway was meant for that part she was meant to be in the movie
Honestly, I'm fine with Rachel McAdams in the role. Infact I can imagine other actresses playing Andy than Anne Hathaway but since Anne did a great job at playing it, so no complain again eventhough Rachel would've been great too
true
ikr? the incomparable Theodore Shapiro!
This is my favorite favorite movie I have seen it 123 times already and counting. the best of the best.
I finally understand why I had to write an essay about this film for a college film class I took.
Stanley Tucci didn't change at all in these 14 years.
How about Anne Hathaway? She looks the same like she was 20 years ago 😂😂😂
@@Erasureeraser Anne is still quite young, she's 30's . But, Stanley Tucci is 50 something
I LOVE MERYL STREEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP, please more of her and her movies!!
LIVING, FOR THE COMPLETE CAST LINE-UP INTERVIEWEES!! VERY WELL DONE, COMMITMENT!
I think more people can relate to Andy in this movie than we even realize…. Especially when you are an administrative assistant and work for a woman.
Every industry and every gender..
Emily was perfect. I lived in London at the time this movie came out and London was full of 'Emily's'. Ambitous young fashionistas who take everything too seriously and want to work at THAT office or for THAT person.
I could’ve watched two hours of this. Thank you so, so much EW for making this happen. Another layer added to the legacy 15 years later.
I wish I could give a thousand likes tot his video. Thank Ew for this marvelous interview. This movie has a very deep meaning to me.
This is by far my go to movie. Whether I am sad, happy ect. Every character was essential to the story. From the staff rushing to get their comfy shoes on to Miranda demonstrating what sacrifices needed or occur when you have to run a successful business. ❤❤❤❤❤
omg no way. i love this cast so much, emily, anne, meryl and stanley omgoewnsnajd
This movie is like a fine box of luxury chocolates, full of delicious surprises, at times you crave just one, other times you indulge yourself to the whole box. It stands repeat viewings like no other. Possibly the best expression of mainstream Hollywood.
Annie is so profoundly beautiful. Timeless face ❤️
wonderful video here... thank you all for coming together to talk about the past. you brought back so many memories of what a great film it was. mahalo from hawaii.
Saw this on IG, came here immediately! Love this movie, especially Emily Blunt in this.
I don't even know how many times I've watched that movie!! I love Emily Blunt ♥️
This is my third time, watching James Woodall‘s video on “the most interesting scene“ in the Devil wears Prada. I’m constantly amazed by his erudition, his thoroughness, intellect and his wit. Well done.
So wonderful that they all seem equally invested in the film. It just makes the entire project so much more special 🥺
It would be awesome if Patricia Fields made a coffee table book that showcases the style of Miranda, Andi and Emily and how anyone can recreate the outfits regardless of their budget.
Omg yes!! That would be amazing!
I actually take this DVD with me when I travel...
So amazing to see them all together! I love this film! If it wasn't for this film we wouldn't have had so many films like CRUELLA for instance.
Emily Blunt is A+ in The Devil. In everything really.
My gosh, one of the favorite movies of my mom is 15 years... time goes fast.
I work for a magazine and we still do place it page by page physically and send it to the printers as well as placing it digitally. Love this film. Timeless.
I’m here for Meryl!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Same
Great video. I loved the movie and yes, magazine publishing was at its height when this was filmed. So much has changed, even the atmosphere around Anna Wintor has lessoned in importance ...
I will never get sick of this movie! Love Andy was transformed into a fashionista with that Chanel boots and sunglasses.
I don’t get bored of this movie….like at all!
I like the interviewers tone of voice. Very controlled, modulated and he was not shrill/annoying/hyperactive/fake or buddy-buddy in the way a lot of American interviewers behave. Thank you! Much enjoyed
I love Meryl!! She is such a brilliant actress
I agree completely with the host, I can watch this movie forever. For many, many reasons…just great!
Thanks a lot.
can't tell you how many times I have watched this movie. It comes on TV and I say to myself "nah won't watch it again" and lo and behold Im back in it. The Madonna soundtrack helps. Emily Blunt is fantastic Im not one for this type of movie but I get pulled in every time. If I say Ive watched it 10 times Im probably conservative. I don't think Ive watched any movie so many times. Not even To Kill a Mockingbird ....lol
Loved this! I can't believe you got so many schedules to align.
This was absolutely perfect! I just don’t watch this film(movie), you become a part of it, drawn into this world of Miranda Presley(Meryl Streep) is incredible and worth ones time to watch always!
Giselle hardly "Starred" in it, she had about two lines LOLLL! Tucci and Streep were PERFECTLY cast and I just love Emily Blunt.
I love watching this movie over and over again! It never gets old.
This iswhat I needed today!
thanks for editing out the awkward moments that come with a zoom meeting
One of my favorite movie.
I LOVE this movie! The BEST casting ever!!! I watch it every time it's on.
Everyone in this film is PERFECT, 100% of the time. Miranda is iconic, but Emily Blunt's timing is priceless - a complete scene stealer. Very understated work.
TDWP is the epitome of cinematic elegance-a timeless masterpiece that captivates everyone's sensibilities effortlessly. Enraptured since 2006, every detail resonates impeccably. Bravo!
I could watch so much more of this convo. Post the uncut conversation!
Just watched this movie for the first time! It is now a movie I can watch over and over.
What are the twins going to do with that, SHARE?
One of my all time favorite movies - incredibly written and that soundtrack is fantastic. I can watch it over and over again and it puts me in this certain place that I love. Timeless!
Well, where are these fabulous "copies'? I don't see them anywhere...
I watched it this week and gotta say that it is indeed a classic that's really classy and fun.
This interview was really amazing
Fashion Cult, pop cult and just amazing comedy!
