"It smells like an elephant" wasn't a phrase I was expecting to hear today to describe a guitar.
If you've never smelled an elephant up close.. let's just say I hope for Jason's sake that's not true!
He says it like it's a smell we would all know intimately
Fun factoids, Sassafras was used to flavor root beer originally. Sassafras oil is also required to make mdma. Sassafras tea makes you feel good and tastes good.
So, basically this wiring config is the David Gilmour mod, but instead of the mini toggle, they used a push/pull POT. I have 2 Strats currently and I used the mini toggle setup. It's really a very simple solder job. Neck and Bridge or all 3 depending on where you move the 5 way.
They have tried this before. I have a Delux from Mexico that has a "push-push" switch for adding the Bridge to 4 and 5. With it turned on, all knobs work on all pups. Go figure! Also have last years edition of this guitar, all switching works as it should. The MiM delux is a pretty piece of ash and the neck is one of those compound jobs.
I rewired mine, so when the selector is in position #1(bridge PU), turning the middle tone knob will turn on the bridge and neck PUs. Keep turning, and all three blend together. Sounds great.
Wow. I didn't know Gilmour did that. I did it to my MIJ Strat back in the 90's, as a mod based on my Ernie Ball Steve Morse signature. He'd done that with his Franken-Tele as well. Simple. No matter what PU configuration, 1 toggle alone for the bridge. So, did Morse get the idea from Gilmour?
Forgive me, but all the luthiers I know remove the neck to get the pick-guard off a Strat. 4 screws, you're done. But thanks so much for the video; I'm thinking of getting one send on approval, and you gave me all the insights in construction and sound that I needed.
This is my favorite Strat of the last few years to come out of California. The 6 point trem, the satin finish, the push pull, all good things!
What about the headstock? That’s the part that gets me down.
@@renodavid What about the head stock? What's your issue? The string-trees?
@@Gelon01 Just the larger size. Not a fan of that particular style. 👍
@@renodavid That headstock is really nice. 70th style. I like both. In this particular guitar the 70th looks better than the 60s.
@predigr Ya, I prefer the larger headstocks whenever I can get it!
Sassafras has a wide range of uses, including furniture, interior and exterior joinery, windows, doors, door frames, kitchen cabinetry, posts, fencing, boxes, crates, containers, slack cooperage, millwork and boat building
Aka it’s wood lol
Regarding the PW-36 stamp on the trem block: Fender have been stamping them like this for many years. The PW-36 is the steel block version (usually found on USA Strats) and the PW-29 is the zinc block version (usually found on Mexican Strats). The 'PW' stands for Ping Works, the Korean company that makes them (and most of the tuners Fender and Gibson use).
Ash wood will become harder to find with the trees dying out. They will come back someday but it will be a while until they recover. I really like the choice of wood for these strats. Great video!
Ash trees are literally everywhere in So. Cal. & grow like weeds. There is no shortage at all. It isn’t favored because it’s more often a heavy wood.
@@manonbassguitarthe emerald ash bore is making its way across the country. It’s only a matter of time.
@@billthepainter5106 they just cut out every ash tree in my neighborhood because they are just dying everywhere.
There are ash options on the Player 2 series. If they're making Mexican guitars with it there is probably more supply than people realise.
I have many ash trees on my 3.5 acre property.
finally a fender
No kidding
Screw Fender !
@@samright4661 at least they have the decency to offer fair prices, that said my best fender is an Ibanez
I mean, it makes sense given that Fender isn’t his forte. 🤷🏻♂️
Love the channel, but I have two SGs (same model) and 11 Fenders, so it’s always nice when he posts a Fender video.
Your comment made me smile. I was going to jokingly reply, " said no one ever," but that's definitely not how I feel. I do have an equal curiosity about Fenders offerings as well as many other brands besides Gibson.
So glad you showed us one of these from this series, thank you! These caught my eye not only because of their look - I'm really drawn particularly to the version you demonstrate in this review - but also because I have an American Performer Telecaster I bought a few years ago and it's still my favorite guitar. I don't have a Strat yet so I’ll have to give one of these a try.
It looks great and the pups sound great . I'd like to try the telecaster you have.
In here too. Growing up my grandmother had a couple of sassafras trees that we would sometimes help her pick leaves from for making a condiment known as filet. Never thought of using the wood for anything. Although I've heard of it being used as accent pieces in wood working. The smell is somewhere between parsley and cilantro. This guitar kind of sounds like a Mustang . Love that color as is but would look great all polished up. Thanks whoever for sharing. I'm a Gibson fan but also a Fender fan. Love them Fender Fridays.
If you are one of the people wondering why everyone keeps talking about the sassafras guitar, it's because the drug ecstasy is derived from it.
Oh
Fender Sassafraster.
Good one . I'd like to see that on the headstock
Reminds me of a highway one. So cool holy crap. I would kill for a lefty satin red with a 70s headstock
I still have one of those. I got it for gigging once the cost of replacing my old '69 strat started getting ridiculous & I dig the fatter headstocks.
Howdy everyone!! My personal preference would be maple fretboards on these.
G&L will sometimes use Sassafras too. (Usually for transparent finishes.)
Yes. On their tribute models.
The best feature is the Yosemite pickups. They came with the JV Modified Strats a couple of years ago.
Replace with Pure Vintage '59 pick ups and you've got a great sounding guitar.
I have them on a Yamaha egv. I got them because of the alnico IV bridge.
Cool, has the same controls as the JV modified Strat with the ability to add the neck in.
YEAH for Fender Fridays!!!
Sassafras, what a fun word. Also not a bad tea.
I have the previous model Honey Burst and it is my favorite Strat, more than the AM Pro 2. Very thin neck and I love the pickups. I think that for the money it cost me in 2022, it came as a gift. I have a Strat Charvel in Sassafras and resonance and low weight in one pass. Better than the heavier Ash.
It’s a nice looking guitar, not sure if I like the gloss better but it definitely gets a darker hue when polished. It has the typical tinny Fender sound! Sounded pretty good dirty!
Dont love the satin but loved that colour with that woodgrain!
Sassafras approved. 😺👍
A missed opportunity for locking tuners, but those Yosemite's sound nice!
The best thing about the entry MIA Fenders are the giant jumbo frets.
This isn't an MIA entry level guitar...
Yay! Fender episode!
Sassafras looks and sounds gorgeous. As a timber it is superior in every way to the cheapo Alder, Ash, Poplar, Basswood etc that manufacturers usually use for this style of guitar.
Looks like a lovely finish. Thanks for sharing this with us 😎😎👍👍
Looks good where you polished.
12:54 I do the exact same punching motion to push mine, lol
i like push oush pots much more than push pull. My henrik danhage charvel has a push push to switch the pickup, super cool!
Just FYI the push-pull addition of the neck pickup is not what the Greasebucket refers to. The Greasebucket is just the circuit with some caps and resistors that changes the frequency roll-off of the tone pots.
yes it also lets you, use the second knob, to roll off the tone on your middle and bridge pickup, most the it just does the middle
Thank you
"Why call this mocha when it is root beer finish especially when it smells like that, No it just kind of smells like an elephant "
Trogly??????? What the hell did you just say?
Finally a real guitar.
that ten years gone caugth me of guard 😊 great Video trog
Fender - vrhunske gitare !!! 👍👍👍 😄
Who's old enough to remember "Hot Smoke And Sassafras?" Definitely
a Fender there! Anyway, I LOVE the LOOK of this thing! Thank you!
I really wish Fender would add an option for a flatter neck radius. A 12" or compound 12-16 would be awesome
Player plus is 12"
Ultra is 10"-14"
I think my old '69 strat is 9" or maybe less? It feels way more curved than any of my Gibsons, that's for sure
In '79, I very nearly bought a Travis Bean. Aluminum neck with flat fretboard. The sustain rang almost forever.
It was the same model and color (red) as Ron Wood's copy. $250 new. They now go for around $5,000 used. Instead I bought a black Tele Custom. Same model and color (black) that Keith Richards has. Also $250 brand new. USA made. I wish I still had it.
@@cataclysmicconverter Can you believe it was $250 new? Same with that Tele.
@cataclysmicconverter I saw Ronnie play his red one during a New Barbarians show (and took photos) but was also excited because Keith was playin his (mt) black Telecaster Custom. What a show. But yeah, those days of cheap gutars. In '75 a local music store had a black Les Paul Studio for $450, new.
I don’t know fender guitars all that well but might that “bump” in the route be to accommodate at tele bridge pickup? I know their baseplates are bigger than the coils itself. Any Fender guys out there that would know?
I have a les paul and a fender strat hss.and a prs dgt.l love them all
I'm also wondering why Fender decided to have the push/pull knob for the neck PU on the last tone control. Why not make it to bring in the bridge PU? The wiring is closer, first of all, and either way, you have 7 options. My 80's MIJ has a toggle I installed to bring in the neck PU. The Steve Morse guitar has a toggle for the same purpose. What was Fender thinking???
That tone is phenomenal! What gear were you using?
Muy bonitas guitarras camarada!🎸
Without locking tuners Does it stay in tune ? that g string is always an issue for me.
That thing is sweet.
Had he lived, I could see founding Chicago guitarist Terry Kath choosing this model of Strat to be his signature model. Everyone recognizes him for his modified Telecaster, but this Strat definitely looks like it would be up his alley.
Because of the natural wood?
Maybe, @@renodavid.
Nice polished section
It’s basically the new Highway One with fancy electronics
Dang it almost sounds like a maple body and a maple everything lol very nice 🎉🎉🎉
Very nice guitar with some impressive features - except for the headstock. 😬
I have to say that I’ve been impressed with those Yosemite pickups in all the various demo videos that I’ve seen. Might have to try them out. Thanks for the demo!👍
A simple solution to a push/pull pot would be a knob with a bead around the top for better grip😮 or just make it a push/push pot😮 Do I have to think of everything 🤔
I really like the finish on this one. Looks good to me!
Sasafras. That means Cheap in Fender. Sorry. I'm a traditionalist.
No QC issues?
Very nice!
@Trogly
Have you mentioned in your videos the reason for the sticker on the bridge?
Keep up the great work, appreciate the knowledge!
It looks like a little sticker to cover the hole for the trem arm.
@@cataclysmicconverter Spring! Who knew? Obviously, I’m not a Strat guy.
It’s for the spring
Does it come in Rootbeer? That would be delicious 😋!
I really like this one.
Beautiful strat!
I want the sugar pine Strat
This may be a really dumb question but where can I get the guitar cable attachment for the multimeter? Did you make it ?
Alligator clips on a small patch lead
Gotta crack the screws a bit on the neck in order to get that pickguard off without dropping the neck pickup on the Fender's with the overhang boards. Love seeing a Fender on here from time to time!
Its a good Idea anyway to loosen those screws and pop that neck into place. They're almost always slightly misaligned.
Cool strat, the humbucker routes are all exaggerated on the bottom on all the American pro / performer / ultra bodies and the bottom of the neck pockets were also exaggerated on the pre 2008 models
0:55 THE SPRUCE MOOSE! HOP IN!
Every day should be Fender Friday.
I definitely want it.
Those Fender push pull pots are so hard to pull, they should use push push which are much easier to switch, I love that Mocha finish.
I would like to see the Telecaster in Mocha!
You should watch the video and hear what he says about the push pull pot
So it has a built in Gilmour mod!
I'm gonna get it.
It’s really weird see you with a strat strapped on… lol it looks good and sounds awesome… even if it smells like an elephant. lol 🎸🤓👍🗽🙏🥓
Wish this had a maple neck
So the American Performer SSS Strat has the same wiring as the American Professional II SSS Strat except that the neck pickup is added in via a push-pull pot instead of a push-push pot.
A few years ago the performer comes with the push push. The professional is basically the same guitar with a hard case addition.
I've always thought the pull/push knobs were superior to the push/pull knobs. 😊
Raw sassafras does smell like root beer when you work it. i'v built some tabletops with it, and thought it would make for a cool guitar. especially considering how light the pieces i worked with were.
I’m not usually a fan of these natural colors like this but it really is a good looking guitar. I like colors usually but not with this. That wood is beautiful. I’d be sold if this was a hard tail! I love all my Fender guitars but the one I don’t have is a Strat! It’s just hard to find a hard tail that I like. But I’ll always keep looking! 😅
A unique wood.....then obscure it with a dark finish. SPRUCE.......I always thought a strat or tele would be interesting in spruce.
"Smells like an elephant". I dont think i ever smelled one before.
Referring to their area in the zoo haha
So, it's a Sassocaster...
Are sassafras trees that rare? Not really, but getting a sassafras tree big enough to make a guitar out of is a challenge.
Some good tones in there.
The bridge route is always that shape.
Salutations Austin!
Nice Stratocaster, I have been checking out the latest Fender Stratocasters recently because it is the 70th anniversary of the Stratocaster, but I was having trouble choosing, and this particular finish and wood choice was just not quite impressing me, but once you polished up that area under the pick guard I was able to imagine the entire guitar polished and I think it would really look fantastic, particularly with a great wood grain choice, it would really come alive.
Thanks for sharing!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
☀️✨🌟🎸
Looks a bit like one of those Highway One strats from the early aughts.
Ive played strats most of my life and I just dont like a single coil p-up at the bridge pos in any guitar. Another 1000+ guitar shipped in a gig purse is def a negative.
I agree. Too ear piercing unless you're playing some 60s soul chords, or Motown. And shipping in a gig bag is just a stupid maneuver.
I'd like to see someone wire all the pickups in series
6:00 Not tremolo….it’s vibrato.🎸👍
That's one spec. People miss on Those alot,Jumbo frets.
The American performers used to be called the American special.
American specials were too good- likely took sales away from the higher price strats.
These look awesome, and nicely priced for US made. Thanks, Trogly!
Wow, that sounds great!
Why the heck are we still using screw in trem bars?
New Fender, remember (Highway Series), beautiful guitar in 2024.
Why not use cherry or oak?
I would assume since they have no historical connection to the brands golden era. Each of these 3 offerings do
I think all the american pro strats have HSH routes
A unique wood, sassafras.....then obscure it with a dark finish??? Now, SPRUCE.......I always thought a strat or tele would sound interesting in spruce. This finish is actually "matte" not satin, not the same thing, a mistake everybody keeps making. It won't be "satin" until you buff the whole guitar good and proper. In recent years the routs in Fender guitars look horrible along with giant indexing holes. Except for the bridge, this looks way better.
Not crazy about the finish colors, maybe in a year or so, I’ll find one with a little bit of finish wear, for a good price., then… pimp gold metal flake, nitro clear body and neck, I’ll age the pick guard and plastics, journey man relic!, then maybe my American Standard will have company!
i have a fender with a push pull and it's flush with the guard ... not really useful on the fly but only use it at home anyway
I imagine that these sassafras bodied instruments will be big with clandestine lab operators.
I want one
It smells like an elephant!?...and what is that like? ..pray tell
There we go again with Fender being cheap not even giving you a case of American guitar. I don’t know when I’ve seen that before.
Meh. Their gig bags are solid. PRS does the same thing on the Silver Sky. It could be a lot worse, see Epiphone IBG series
I don't know it it's the neck shape, the finish, or the strat, but your guitar playing sounds more fluid playing a Stratocaster.
Fender is King
