- We have been taking an look inside the walls of Mountjoy Prison over the past week, speaking to prison officers about their role in the institution.
TheJournal.ie was also given a quick look inside a prisoner’s cell, with their permission.
This is a standard cell which any class of prisoner could be placed in.
It consists of a small desk and chair, a bed, heating, a simple TV, a noticeboard, and in-cell sanitation - ‘slopping out’ came to an end in Mountjoy in 2013.
Take a look at the video above for a quick tour.

@@007cheeesepuff5 it’s the crooked government they just wanna take and not return
When i was there in 2011 it was a kip. Looks grand now. Mr McBrearty was the soundest officer there when I was there, one of the few.
Prison Officer Alan Dinan from Ennis currently working in Mounjoy, wanted for desertion from the British army but recruited by the Irish Prison service to lock people away? DISGRACEFUL!!
@@archdukehamburgervononionr1948 Is he related to Harry Dinan?
Thats better then where i live now

Then when you leave your cell things get messy with the other inmates eyeing you up to test you. Don't drop the soap.
Im Londoner I was there 2003 2006 then went to training unit jus coming to end of my 12yr sentence .crazy as it sounds it was all positive proper good geezers around me .big shout u no who you r 😎

I was up wheatfield with a Londoner named Jamie, we ended up sheton Abbey, he was grafter going around Europe doing burglarys, u no who I'm talking bout?
All prisons are bad including mountjoy but compared to other prisons around the world like black dolphin in russia 🇷🇺 or even some American prisons like guantanamo bay, mountjoy is a rundown holiday camp.
this aint a cell bro this is a studio apartment
much better than second year apartment room
why are european prisons so much nicer than american prisons?
Do they have cells for non prisoners
I’ve stayed in worse hotels.
We got a pet shop boys fan here lads

But he has no obligation to be in the British Army he's an Irishman
very small
Most of the prison doesn't have "in cell sanitation" only one wing does. Shame to see screws going on like a toilet in a cell is great progress.
whats the deal with the rest of cells? everybody has to use a bucket or is there some shared toilets somewhere?
zebble ganubi the whole jail was slop out 2 and sometimes 3 men cells all share a bucket. D wing is the only wing with plumbing to the cells now...I could be wrong in 2018 tho.
Every cell is single man now and all have toilets and the way you seen it, only this cell is in very good condition, all depends on the person in the cell how its kept

The bold mr mack
Not too shabby...not too shabby at all...does the prisoner have to pay a licence for that TV?...I could get used to that...no bills, a nice bed, my own private toilet..what more could you ask for???!!!
Freedom is a very "loose" term...imagine you live in absolute poverty and end up in prison?...it could be the case that "freedom" woulnd't be too appealing anymore...
A life
A job
Get married
Have kids
A car
A holiday in the summer
A sense of accomplishment
If a free bed and tv is all you strive to get in life - you're already dead....
To not be shanked.
Yeah, if he doesn't pay the fee he could get a court summons and get banged up.
No thanks I'll stay free and choose my own accommodation and not be warehoused like a beast.
Cells are disgusting ☣️
I don't think this is what Irish prison are like because irish prison are as worst as the usa prison
This is where NEPHET, Martin and Varadker will end up one day 🤞
U left Donnelly out
im afraid tat wnt happen we only lock up people who dnt pay tv licenses them people u mentioned will get big pensions like their banking buddies
Jesus, If I was homeless, I would commit a crime. Free TV?? Is that coming out of the taxpayers money??
i would rather watch the paint chip off the wall than watch anything on irish tv
Yes this jusg in.....prisons are paid for by the state.
