Hey Google Boy! Thanks for watching. Normal dash cams also have their good points - most of them start when you turn on the engine unlike the GoPro - but the quality of the GoPro is pretty hard to beat. All the best.
*This is Better than a dashcam because, you can record longer videos. On a dashcam each clip is only 1 to 3 minutes long. I'm buying a go pro & using it as a dashcam.* 💯
Hey Jesuit 7. thanks for watching and commenting on the video. gopro is a very good option for a dash cam but make sure u remove it from your car when u stop. you don't want to attract thieves and gopros can shut down if they get too hot like if they are left in vehicles. all the best
Hey Andrew, Thanks for your kind words and so happy to hear you found my video to be helpful. Safe travels in your RV. I hope you have lots of great adventures ! All the best.
Thank you for the advice. I have found that typical dash cams picture quality does not equal the quality of a GoPro. I think this will be a better alternative.
Hey Mustang, thanks for watching and your kind words. One of the best options of the gopro is you can select a variety of resolutions as required. On my hero 9 I can choose 1080, 4k or even 5k if I wanted, although for storage space on my sd card, I normally choose 1080. Thanks again for taking the time to drop me a line. all the best.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video and share your ideas and knowledge, very helpful and well explained. Unless I don't understand the looping feature, it may be prudent to increase the looping time to cover the entire card. If involved in a driving mishap, It would be easy to forget to turn off the GoPro and overwrite the important footage while tending to the effects of an accident or other mishap.
Hey JoeyJig! So sorry to take so long to reply to your great comment. I'm so glad you found my video was helpful. You have raised a good point. If you are in an accident, worrying about what looping settings you have applied is the last thing you want to worry about. Your safety and the safety of your passengers and / or other drivers would definitely be paramount. I can see where in that scenario letting the GoPro record to the remainder of the card before looping would be the best thing. The Twenty mins time frame i mentioned in the video is just a decent amount of time for most situations but the good thing is the gopro gives you a lot of flexibility in this area. thanks again for your comment and raising a very important point. All the best.
@JoeyJig just a heads up, the looping function doesn't work the way you are thinking. In fact, the "max" setting is the worst setting to use for your scenario! The way it works, is that they camera will record for the given interval, then it will stop, save the video, and then begin another recording. If the memory card fills up, the least recent video will be overwritten on the next save. So, if you are have an sd card that can save 6 hours of video, and your camera is set to record 20 minute intervals, then when you look at the files on your card after some use, you'll have 18 videos on that card, each 20 minutes long. So if you get in an accident and leave the camera running and the 20 minute interval ends, your camera will save that 20 minute video and delete the oldest video on the camera (from 6 hours ago, minimum). Now, if you have it set on max, you can run into the issue you mentioned! Say you've been driving for 5 hours and 50 minutes, you get in an accident and continue recording for 10 more minutes. Your card will fill up and delete the long 6 hour video to make space for a new 6 hour long video. So having the camera set to 20 minutes (I personally use 1 hour) is actually better than max, in the off chance you get into an accident 5.5 hours into a long road trip
I like how easy the suction cup seems to be, regular dashcams are a pain when it comes to that. But I see 1 downside : it doesn't automatically start recording
Thats not a bad thing because sometimes dash cams WONT automatically turn on when supposed to so if you do it manually it will always turn on and work. If you forget its your fault.
Hey You Seir. Thanks so much for your comments. The suction cup is extraordinarily strong when fitted correctly. The fact the gopro doesn't start recording when you turn on the ignition is a downside, but the quality of the footage - even on 1080p - in my opinion outweighs it. Thanks again for watching.
@@ylzno; most are suppose to start when you turn on your vehicle. However, I’ve had two models that would start sometimes, but would not other times. So irritating.
Also, on the topic of the camera heating up, I imagine that removing the battery and running the camera solely on corded power would minimize heat generation since the discharging/charging battery wouldn't be adding heat to the system. There is a compromise with not having battery backup, but the choice is yours.
Hi Anthony A. Running it straight off the USB in the car would definitely lessen the heat but if the vehicle stalls or when the ignition is turned off the camera will shutdown straight away. I would be reluctant to employ this method as i would be afraid the data may corrupt from the sudden shutdown. At least with a battery in the camera there would be less chance of this happening.
Good video on showing how to use a GoPro as a dashcam. I suppose if high detail is the only important factor then it could be a solution for some. Here are some reasons I would choose not to: * Price. You would need to get 2. One for front and one for rear: around $350+ x 2, plus suction mount: around $65 x 2. All USD plus any taxes. Plus anything else for installation to hardwire power. * Heat. If you operate the GoPro in hot environments like in a car under sunlight, it will likely overheat. When overheating it will shutdown and not be recording. Plus, since these have Lithium-ion batteries, temperatures above 45°C (113°F) will damage the batteries faster and cause bulging and battery life/capacity loss. Not to mention the fire hazard of bulging batteries in hot environments too. That's why you don't see many dashcams now with Li-ion batteries. * Theft. Since GoPros are expensive, multi-purpose and desirable, they are likely to get stolen if left in the car for park mode operation. If you decide to take them with you when you park, then it is more hassle, inconvenience, time consuming and more to carry. Plus, no park mode protection. * Event tagging. The GoPro will have continuous recording but not event tagging for impact, motion or manual recording events. If you have ever had to review security footage without event tagging, trying to find a particular event is time consuming. The event tagging that dashcams do is meant to help save time and find events faster. Plus, you can enable write protection to prevent event footage from getting overwritten. In the GoPro, you will have to get the footage right away to ensure that it doesn't. If you decide to do it later but forget, then you could lose the footage. * Power. If you choose to have park mode you will need something that will monitor the car battery to prevent the GoPro from draining it. Not to mention you are using 2 GoPros instead of one dashcam. I suspect the GoPros also have higher power requirements each. If not using them for park mode then you will have to turn both off when parking and both on when starting your drive. More inconvenience. All these reasons may not seem like much but once you start doing this you will probably stop wanting to use the GoPro as a dashcam. Though, everyone has different needs and priorities so different solutions apply. So it may still be the route for some.
Hey Frakking creations ! Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and for your comments. You have raised some really valuable points about why a gopro may not be the right choice for a dashcam. I actually list a few of them in a slide towards the end of my video. The videos intention was just to show how to set up the gopro as a dash cam if you wanted to use it as one. I was also trying to show the versatility of the gopro and how it can be used in situations other than just high octane, thrill seeking activities. I really do appreciate your comment and thanks for letting me know your thoughts. All the best.
question: do you remove your battery to not ruin it when go pro is it attached to the usb port cigarette or can I just leave it inside the gopro? thank you for the helpful video
Hey _aboutsyd . It's a personal choice really. I keep the battery in as it's a more graceful shutdown than just turning off the ignition. I hope this helps. Thanks for your comments and all the best.
Hey Smiler, Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately there is not option to turn off the mic while recording. You can delete audio while editing if you wish. Thanks for watching.
I've been using a GoPro 11 black as a Dash cam and an old GoPro 7 on my back Window both with the original suction cups and use voice control to stop / record & highlight events and to turn them on and off (GoPro 11 will only turn off with voice command tho'... you have to manually turn it on) way better than most chyna and other dashcams.
Hey camranh_royal! Woah! That is a pretty cool set up. Even though it is old now, the Hero 7 was a very good action camera - full HD and with Hypersmooth - so I'm sure the quality is very good. There is a gopro labs qr code that will turn on your GoPro when it gets power - like when you start the car. That might be something that would come in helpful. I'm making a new GoPro Labs video soon, so I'll def include it on there. All the best.
I have not had good luck with dashcams. Did not have one when sideswiped by kid coming into my lane. No way to prove it was his fault. Cost me over $1000. Setting up a Hero 9 so thank you for this excellent video.
Hey A E Pringle. So sorry to read of your accident. I hope you are doing ok. I can imagine it would have been very frustrating to have had to go through that whole process when it wasn't your fault. I hope the hero 9 proves to be a solution of some kind so future events will definitely be captured. Thanks for your kind words and safe travels.
Hey Ricko! Thankyou so much for supporting my channel . I really appreciate your kind words too. if you have any gopro questions I'm always happy to help all the best
Thanks Tim! No the enigma with the weird upside down GoPro camera on the inside of the shield has finally come to a solution. as opposed to a dashcam. You can´t change that GoPro mount BUT you can switch the picture on your pc or whatever you use afterwards!
Hey Ernst. Thanks for your comment. You can definitely rotate the vision on your PC afterwards but you can also use orientation lock- which I forgot to mention in the video - once you have the mount in place. It records the camera vision in the correct orientation so u don't need to flip it in post. Thanks again for watching !
I just bought GoPro Hero 11 Black and when I initially set it up there was a software update... as FYI for everyone... the menus in this video will only appear if you have the "video mode" set to highest quality. If you don't the option for looping will not appear. Also, if you change the video mode later to "Extended Battery" or "Longest Battery" the option for looping will not appear. It only works with "highest quality". And, GoPro has removed the options for 30 seconds... the minimum looping time is now 5 minutes. took me a while to figure this out so thought I would share what I found.
Hey Ken, thanks for your comment. I originally filmed this video on the Hero 9 and some things have definitely changed in the menu since then. Maybe I need to make a new updated video 😆 Thanks again for your feedback, I'm sure our community appreciates you mentioning those differences. All the best.
Helpful video. I have been wanting to use my seldom used GP10 Black as a dash cam for a while. I really wish GoPro would include some sort of update to enable this feature. Seems like a no brainer. I am not a fan of having to remember to press record every time I get into the car for a drive. So for now I stick with my so-so Garmin dash cam.
Hi RoseCityRider. Thankyou for your comments. I'm glad you found my video useful. GoPro Labs apparently has an option where you can set up your gopro to act more like a dashcam. I haven't had a chance to delve into it yet, but it sounds like it would come in very useful in your case. You can also use voice commands to turn on your Hero 10 Black if you forget to turn on the camera when you take off. Thanks again for watching. All the best.
Love this idea, cons number 2 & 4 can be avoided by using a front windshield sun deflector on your car when parked and it will cover the GoPro (if positioned right) so people outside can’t see it
Hey Eduardo, great idea. As long as ppl cant see in via the side windows. Maybe a slit in bottom of the shade for the suction cup might make the shade not look strange. Thanks for your comment.
I like the linear horizon view. Also, will the suction mount work on the dashboard,or does it have to be attached to the windshield? Also, if you attach the usb cable to use as the power source, are you supposed to take the battery out?
Hey Kenn, thanks for your comment. I'm also a big fan of the linear Horizon view. I find it works best in most situations and has none of that fish eye effect which is ok sometimes but can get distractingly. As for the suction cup mount, I've normally only used it on the windshield and outside on the metal chassis of the car. It is pretty impressive but you have to make sure it is properly suctioned onto your car before you take off. I made a video about this cool mount that you might like to check out. ua-cam.com/video/N-HWIaF7Yao/v-deo.html . Regarding your last question, you can take the battery out if you wish but normally I wouldn't. The battery is a failsafe incase you accidentally bump the USB cable while you are out filming. However, if you were going to be filming where the camera is in the one spot for a long time and there is less danger of the cable getting knocked - ie. you are doing a time lapse or night lapse - you might want to take it out. If you are using this method though, your camera won't be waterproof. You can buy a pass through door, which allows you to cover the battery compartment but leave a space where you can connect your USB cable, which is a good option, but again your camera won't be waterproof. I hope this helps.
Have you seen the GoPro Labs updates? > USB Power Triggers: Your GoPro can start/stop capture when USB power is detected, enabling USB-triggered functions such as serving as a dash cam. I'm really tempted to pick up a GoPro to use as a good quality dash cam with this
Hey Danny. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video. I'm pretty excited to read your comments about the Gopro labs power triggers. I'm definitely going to do my own research on that one to find out more. There are some really cool things happening with labs. Hopefully some of the great ideas will end up on the Hero 11 when it is released next month. Thanks again for your great comments.
Postives about GoPro Hero 11 as dash cam is best video quality (important for license plates etc) Downside : expensive , possible theft magnet, prone to overheating in warm climate, manual start (unless you download special firmware) Thanks for video
Hey Red, Thanks for your comments. You have pretty much nailed all the good and bad points on the head. You can use voice activation to start your gopro too and gopro labs does allow you to start the camera with the turn of the key. I'm hoping to put that in a video soon. Cheers
Great video, If you have it plugged in do you need to have the battery in there? Or the battery is not needed because the cable is supply it directly? TIA
Hey Daniel. Thanks for watching and your comment. I have just tested the gopro with it hooked up to the USB port in my car and it works fine without the battery! A message saying ' No Battery' appears on the top right of the screen but it still records fine. Thank you for asking such a great question. I hope this helps. Cheers.
@@tonymsp6 hey Tony. Thanks for your comment. Gopros definitely have a habit of shutting down if they get too hot. If your car is well ventilated and stays within the range specified by gopro 10C '- 35C (14 -95F) if should be OK, but if your external temp is higher , it's a high chance it will shut-down. The lower resolution of 1080 should make some difference as the camera is not working as hard as it is at 4K. I would recommend never leaving your gopro attached to your windshield if you leave the vehicle. It's a theft target and even on a cloudy day your car can still get hot . I found this article that has sone good ideas on how to reduce your Gopro over heating. Cheers. clicklikethis.com/gopro-overheating/
@@AdventureTimMedia I had read somewhere, not sure if it was from GoPro or not, that the USB power method to start/stop still required a battery. Perhaps that was only for automatic starting and stopping with USB power instead of manually stopping the video before you shut off vehicle power.
Thanks for the great video and info. I have a GoPro 10 and 11 and find the camera seems to try centre the camera all the time and you can especially see this when taking a bend in the road, the camera seems to try centre itself and makes the vide look a bit jagged and not a smooth video. I suspect there is a setting l need to turn off, do you perhaps have any advice or suggestions
Hey Ace, firstly apologies for taking so long to reply and thanks for checking out my video. From your post it sounds like you have hypersmooth on - which is great in normal situations- but if you are using it as a dashcam only have it in the 'On' setting , not Boost or Autoboost. The two latter settings will crop your footage more tightly and I think that's what may be causing you issue. The camera is working hard to maintain stabilization at all times in those settings and so prioritises stabilization over everything else. Also, what frame rate are you using ? Normally 30fps should be OK. You could try 60fps but it would use up a lot more space. Hope this helps . Again apologies for taking so long . Hit me up if you have any further questions. All the best.
I think all the cons are weighed out by the stunning video quality of the gopro, it blast's any normal dash cam out of the park and gives you the best possibility to capture number plates etc. If they add proper dash-cam features to the gopro, it would be a no-brainer to use it as a dashcam.
Hey immDroidz! Thanks for your comment. I think the GoPro has a lot of great features that def make it work as a dashcam. Hopefully a future update or the next model will include some of the features you have mentioned. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate the support! All the best.
Those cons can be fixed with some DIY like placement or a bracket for your dashcam, and aircon for high temperatures. The only real downside I see is when you're not in the car (like 4hrs in a shopping mall), you cannot leave it recording because it would affect its lifetime. A solution would be to add another device such as a cheap dashcam with impact sensor pointed at side windows from an angle, or DIY using an arduino with a motion/impact sensor with a physical means to press the GoPro recording button.
Also, instead of a GoPro, I was wondering whether a battery security camera could be used although they might lack video stabilization needed while driving.
Hey Tony! Thanks for your comment ! Yes I did make a GoPro Dash Cam at night video. I'll include the link below for your to check out. Thanks for supporting my channel, mate. I really appreciate it! All the best! ua-cam.com/video/ns-zTXqXPPE/v-deo.html
Hey Khalid! Thanks for your comment. Thanks so much also for your kind words. You never know with GoPro what they will bring out next. I just think it is pretty cool how your action camera can be so versatile it can also double as a gopro! Thanks for watching and all the best to you, mate.
Hey Mike, with looping you can adjust the time interval to suit your situation - 5 , 20, 60 or 120. 11 G files would take ages to download, unless you had a very powerful pc.
@@AdventureTimMedia I know, but it does start to overwrite the earlier videos, I mean too bad you can't have it continuously record and make 5 minute clips, that may make editing slightly better. I think the clips are about 15 minutes each.
If you record it in loop mode, that sounds like it'll take away the need to manually delete video tracks or whatever that the camera automatically create if it's not set in loop mode, but I do wonder the SD card put in their, what is a good size for an SD card if you're going to be looping the video anyway? 4gb, 16 GB, 64 GB, an expensive 1 TB, what is the best SD card size to use for these?
Very good video, short and to the point. Great job! I learned a lot now to try doing it! I’m a senior so need directions to be simple and easy to understand you did that in both of your videos I watched! 5 stars for your videos!
Thankyou so much for your kind words, Barbara! I'm really glad to hear you found it easy to follow, which is always my intention. Have fun with your GoPro and if you could do me a favour and hit that like and subscribe button, I'd really appreciate it! All the best.
Hey Stephan! Thanks for watching and really glad you found my video helpful. Hope things are going great for you in your wonderful land of chocolate and beer! lol. all the best.
so for an "Cheap" GoPro as an DashCam which Version should Someone get ? :D Especially if its sole Purpose is to be installed as an dashcam :D thanks for the video !
Hey Peter ! Thanks for your comments. I used a hero 9 in this video, which worked well but I would also recommend the 10 and 11 too. All three of those cameras have a GPS feature that you can turn on but you can't see when you are driving. You can add it in post if you use the gopro quik app to edit. I'm not sure if this is a feature you would use , but it's a cool option to have if you want to see what speeds you were travelling. They removed this feature from the 12 to save on battery life, reduce over heating and as the thought it wasn't being used much. You can pick up one of these older cameras on Amazon for around 400-500$ AUD. Hope this helps .
2x Hero 8’s and 1x Hero 11. 2x Rove R2-4K’s as F/R Dash Cams and older something for driver witness cam! 2x R2-4K’s were cheaper, and just as effective as 1 H8. My R2-4K’s work great as intended. Sometimes a differing perspective is nice but not as a full time Dash cam! Here is an example of what I can do with my Hero8/11’s: 1 piece of AstroTurf, size approx 3x3 inches square. 2x pieces of lightweight 1/4” wood (I.E., pine) angle cut from point to approx 2-3 inches height and 6” inches length. Glued with popsicle sticks into a ramp. The ramp serves as unobtrusive cover for the GoPro. A small battery supply connected via short length of wire (USB to USB C, for example) to provide ample power continuity to the GoPro camera. The set up is placed approximately 10 feet forward of the pee wee/little league batter box. A video of all the kids when at bat is a treasure! All parents must sign to approve each child or the video, of the disapproving parents, is deleted! A keepsake video for the parents, as all kids are permitted how ever many swings to make a connect with the ball! This can be set up easily for an actual game or even just a practice session!
Hey Jeff! Thanks for watching and letting me know your thoughts on gopro as a dashcam. The other options sound like they do a great job. I'm really interested in your little league idea. I used to be a softball coach- my other channel is called the softball dude - and I'm always interested in ways to help the kids get better at their game. Especially their bat swings. Thanks for sharing your great idea. Btw did the gopro ever get hit by the baseball ⚾️ while u were filming? If so , how did it hold up ? Cheers
@@AdventureTimMedia with the smaller kids at bat, they generally cannot generate enough energy to be significant enough to cause any damage. Experimenting, the best measure I found to protect the camera from a line drive, or accidental falling body, is simply a small pieces of clear plexiglass framing. Looks like a triangle from the side. Round all edges for safety so no sharp points! Experiment!
@mrjeff2396 Hey Jeff, love this idea. I can also envisage connecting the gopro to a gumby mount and attaching that to the side of the batting cage or to the fencing around the diamond ( or even a tripod ). This way, you could capture them batting ( or even pitching) from side on. Man, I think you've given me some great ideas for a future video ! 😆 Thanks again for watching. All the best
Thank you very much for this important explanation about the GoPro, I like to know if it's possible to save the Looping settings for using as Dashcam, also for driving in darkness, please. It would be nice you only have to press one special button for using in different situations, it also prevents to make setting mistakes when you have to drive. 🙂
Hey mate, sorry to take so long to reply. Thanks for watching and your question. Yes you can save your settings when using it as a dashcam. On the Hero 11 and 12 there is a specific video mode called motor that makes it easy to find. On older gopros you can create a custom preset for looping . Once you have saved all your dashcam settings you will always have it available unless you delete it. Hope thus helps
Hey Tim! Heard you on the think media podcast and must say that I’m inspired by your UA-cam journey. Thanks for creating this helpful content and also for sharing your journey! Early days for me but I now have a few ideas on how I can build and improve. I have subscribed to your channel
Hey @ENTHUSE_Me ! Thank you so much for your very kind words. I'm humbled to hear my story may have inspired you in some way. It's been a long journey, often a thankless one, but one that has definitely been rewarding too. Being on Think media was a surreal experience. I really look up to that team so to be chatting to Sean at 5am on a Wednesday morning was pretty wild. 😆 Thanks for subscribing- I really appreciate it - and all the best on your journey. Keep trying to get better and keep being consistent and great things can happen. all the best.
Hey Melody ! Thankyou so much for your kind words. So stoked you found my little video helpful. Thanks again for your comments. All the best to you ! ( maybe I should apply for a job at best buy ! 😆)
I just bought an inexpensive action cam (GP knockoff) for this reason. Mine has the ability to invert the image in the camcorder. Also, it has a remote module to start and stop recording. I'm waiting for a suction mount from the big A. I want it only for my twice yearly drives to Florida and back from Pennsylvania. If I learn anything, I'll return here to post.
Hey @bill9989 ! Thanks for your comment. After I made the video I realised it was easy to change the orientation so the image was the correct way up on playback on my laptop. The remote sounds like a good idea. You can also start and stop recording on the Gopro using voice commands and if you install gopro labs you can have the gopro turn on when you start the car, which is handy. All the best with your new dashcam. What brand did u go for ? Also safe travels down to the Sunshine State on I-95. All the best.
@@AdventureTimMedia Thanks Tim. I bought the Akaso Brave 7 LE. I got it for $110. I chose it because it has a bottom screw (the other Akaso's don't have that, so they need a cage) and it's waterproof to 3 feet. My primary purpose is for a dashcsm but hey, it's Florida so I'll no doubt take it in the surf.
Atleast it wont be to hard to say "go pro start recording" before setting off and it will record without having to go threw the process of turning it on, then hitting record. Thank you for the video.
Hey Sean. Thanks for your comment. You are absolutely right. If your have voice control activated it is a very simple process to start and stop recording. I actually have a video on voice commands coming out in the next couple of weeks so I really liked your comment! . Thanks for watching. I appreciate your support.
Hey @gondwanalon ! That's great ! Let me know how you went. I can imagine you would pretty wild looking footage with the GoPro Max. Thanks for watching.
Hey Othoap. thanks for your comment. I am not aware of other action cameras that have that facility but if you know any please let me know and I will look into them and maybe feature them in a future video. Most dash cams have the option to start filming when the car starts but I haven't heard of any action cameras that do. Thanks for watching. All the best.
I just caught this video and it’s great! This is all new to me. I travel a lot and want to keep a video of each trip, especially when I drive in the country areas. So, I think I want to completely fill the memory card, download to my computer, then reuse the card. Am I thinking correctly? Should I purchase several cards? How many times do I change the card? Yes, it will also be nice to have a record in case of mishaps, too. I thank you in advance for any answers on this. =:)
Hi there Judy, Thankyou for watching and your very kind words. Completely filling up the SD card sounds like the perfect fit for your needs. The GoPro will break up the recording into five min bite sized pieces by default even if you do choose to fill up the whole card. It may sound strange but it is a lot easier to manage that way and all segments are timestamped so you can easily find the segments you want if you need to go back over them for any reason. Once you download your footage, you can format the card and re-use it again and again. Buying a couple of cards would be a good idea for your purpose. You can change the cards how often you like then. The one sd card -if it is a good brand - should last you thousands of uses. I use Sandisk Extreme and Extreme Pro and they have never let me down. You can normally pick them up for a good price on Amazon. I hope this answers all your questions. If you have anymore I am happy to answer them. All the best.
Hey @olilumgbalu5653 ! Thanks for your comment. You could just the gumby mount I guess. That has four awesome long twist ties that you may be able to wrap around the rear view mirror - as long at it can support it. The suction mount is pretty extraordinary though. If you use it correctly it will not come off the windshield! I have attached it to the side of my car and driven at more than 100kmh and it stayed on! And Yes, I was surprised too! lol. Here is a link to that video if you are interested! ua-cam.com/video/N-HWIaF7Yao/v-deo.html
Hey there This and That. After 20mins your gopro will start recording another 20min loop over top of what you have just recorded. You can adjust it to a different time length if you wish.
Thank you! The first video of many that show you can plug it into a cigarette lighter outlet. I'm going for the dash cam mainly yet have the action cam for offroading. Thanks!
Hey Watari ! Thx for watching and for your comments. I always use San Disk Extreme Pro micro SD cards. I currently use the 512 G in my hero 9. all the best
Anti collision camera array? Wow, Ive never heard that term before. It sounds like an excellent safety feature though Gregg! DJI also make great cameras. do you know which one your sister uses in her car, I'm interested to check out the model. Thx for your comment, btw.
@@AdventureTimMedia Yeah the subarus have the cameras for the anti collision system. Mine has three in the front. The camera in the back is for the rearview mirror but it also warns me when I'm about to get rear-ended. The downside is that every once in awhile the car hallucinates and slams on the brakes for no reason. My sister uses the DJI Osmo. The downside is that you have to power it on and press the record button. It has the loop function enabled.
Hey Gregg, I love that safety system on the Subaru. It will surely save many lives but yeah that glitch is a worry 😟 DJI make excellent action cameras too. The osmo does have voice activation capabilities so you can definitely get it to record with your voice.
It has orientation lock…. So solve the upside down issue also you should lead with the fact that you have to press record and the heat issue. I’ve suggested to GoPro that they make a super capacitor battery replacement and am auto mode controlled with with the charging port.
Hey 6b796c65. Thanks for your comment. Yep, orientation lock is definitely an option you can use. Good point. I missed that one. lol. I did mention the other points you raised at 7:46 in the video in my list of downsides of using the GoPro. I like your auto mode idea. My wife has a dashcam that connects to the cigarette lighter in her car and it fires us as soon as the ignition is turned, and if GoPro could make that happen on a future version of the camera, that would be brilliant. Thanks again for watching. All the best.
Hey Alok! thanks for watching and your question. I use the gopro battery but you can also connect it directly to a usb port in your car. if you do the latter it will shut down the minute you turn off the car. Always make sure you remove your cam from the car if you are going to park it somewhere so it doesn't make it a target for thrives I hope this helps. all the best
When you say “LOOPING INTERVALS RANGE FROM 5MIN TO THE ENTIRE SD CARD” Dose it stop recording when the card is full, or does it automatically write over itself??
Hey Ruben. Thanks for your comment. The looping intervals can be set as high as Max, which means at that setting it will record until the card fills up and then start recording over the start of the video. I hope this helps. Cheers
Hey 9876karthi ! Thanks for your super kind words! It should work fine on your Hero 8 , just as it does on those later models. Just watch that it doesn't overheat - gopros work best in ventilated spaces- and don't leave it in your vehicle when you stop the car ( to prevent theft ). if you have any more questions, please feel free to hit me up. cheers
I made a video in 4K but when I uploaded to UA-cam it looks terrible and slow. Tried 1080p and the same thing. Your video looks great and crispy. Is there anything I could be missing?
Hey Junis, That is strange. Did the footage look great on your PC or phone and then bad on UA-cam? If you have the settings that you used let me know and I'll do some investigating for you, cheers
Ok so I’m about as dumb as a bag of rocks. Sorry rocks! So you say there’s a way to make your GoPro recordings view in the upright position after say recording with the camera upside down? I believe my camera is a GoPro Hero8 Black. Also what’s the benefits of I believe you called it a multimedia cover or case around your GoPro? I did see your power cord plugs in towards the rear vs to the side which is nice. Especially since I record from a motorcycle. Any help is greatly appreciated. ✌🏽
Hey Knuckledragnation ! Firstly, apologies for taking so long to reply. Secondly, you're not as dumb as rocks, mate and I'm happy to help . In the video, my footage was recorded upside down and then in post production I flipped it in my editing software. That's because I recorded it with the orientation locked. By default your hero 8 will have its setting as orientation all, which means that if you turn your camera upside down and hit record, it will playback the right way up. A much easier way is to lock the orientation on the camera so if the camera is turned upside down , when you play back your footage after recording it will be the right way up. If you swipe down from the rear screen you will see the icon for orientation in the middle of the bottom row. Pressing it will lock the orientation. Press again to unlock. I used the Gopro media mod in this video. I find it handy as it has a 3.5inch mic jack, it has cold shoes for lights and other accessories and it has a usb-c charging point on the rear. It also has two handy mics. It's a cool little unit and is weather resistant but not water proof. I hope this helps, anymore questions feel free to hot me up. Safe travels
Does it remember those settings? Or do I have to do it every time I go driving? I don’t mind turning it on any time I’m gonna drive but I don’t wanna change all these settings
Hey @DjangoGroen, thanks for your comment. Once you put the preset into your GoPro - in this video it was titled looping - that preset is going to remain on your camera - unless you choose to delete it. If you turn on the voice commands setting you can tell your gopro to 'Start Recording' and it will do everything for you hands free. Hope this helps.
Hey mate, in video mode, tap the oblong , scroll to the top of the video options and you will see a strange looking icon in the top right ( looks like and A standing on a reflection of an A ). Once you tap that the looping option will appear. Hope this helps
In a different video you compared two GoPro units mounted as dash cams side by side. With a dual mount, could one unit record forward and the other the cars coming up behind me?
Hey Katy, thanks for your question. You could possibly do it if you had a gopro attached to a Suction mount on the front windscreen and then the same setup on the rear windshield. If you then turn on voice control on both Gopros, and then say ' gopro start recording ' that would work. I hope this helps. btw this might be a good idea for a video. Let me know if you'd like me to make one demonstrating this idea. cheers.
Hey Chrisevv98 . Thanks for watching. just wondering what resolution and settings are you currently using on the Hero 7 ? I normally use 1080 hd but 4k would probably be better at picking up number plates
Hey David, that's great to hear it worked well for you ! A bit of tweaking and you'll have no hood ( or bonnet we call it in Australia) in yr video! thanks for yr comment and all the best.
@@enriquealburez3428 That's great to hear, If you have any questions about GoPro, let me know and I am happy to help. I have lots of helpful videos on this channel too that you might like to see. All the best,
Thanks for your tips I spent over 200 bucks for few brands 4k dash cam end up it's suck the image quality both nights and days are not good for license readers, so I was thinking get my self a gopro as a dashcam
Hey William. Glad you found my video helpful. Sorry to hear you had a hard time trying to find a good dash cam. There are a lot of average products out there. Gopro is pretty simple to use and if you turn on voice commands , you can use it hands free. if you have any questions abt using the gopro as a dashcam, feel free to reach out. all the best.
Hey William. Thanks for your question. Here are a few ideas that might help: always ensure u record in a well ventilated area. In the car it's a good idea to have the air conditioning on when it's hot. As the gopro only has vents on the bottom, try not to have it running on a flat surface for long periods of time. Keep out of sunlight as much as possible- difficult if using it as a dash cam admittedly - and try not to record for extra long periods. Another option is lowering the resolution and turning off the GPS and voice commands settings. I hope these ideas help. all the best.
@@AdventureTimMedia I have watched few videos on UA-cam, they're said the battery also caused heating issues. Some others people they're taken off internal battery, then use external battery to power on with USB and leaves battery slot opens, But I was thinking, what if I just power on gopro with my car and doesn't use external or internal battery do you think it will work on gopro latest firmware? I'm planning to gets a gopro 10
Hey Brandon, that would really be a great idea. They would have to work on the over heating issue that happens with some of their cameras tho and could make it a smaller flatter profile more suitable for a vehicle that would be ideal. Great idea and thanks for watching.
The footage doesn’t turn when the car does? I was using mine in the car a week ago and noticed that when I turn the car I moved from center to the right when turning. Then I caught up and put me back in center.
Hi JWooTV. The camera needs to be turned on before you start the car or you can use voice commands - if you turn on the option on your gopro - to start recording. I have heard that you can set up the camera to start when the car does using 'GoPro Lab's, an experimental arm of the company where they test out things that may end up on future cameras. Let me know if you would like me to explore this option in a future video. cheers.
Hey @happysnowwhite ! Thanks for your comment ! If you tap on the oblong at the bottom of the rear screen ( it will probably say video ) it will bring up a menu showing all your video options. Scroll to the bottom to where you will find + Create New Preset. The next screen will offer looping as one of your options. Select it, tap on the tick at the top right corner , choose your settings and then hit the tick agsin to confirm. When the next screen appears, scroll to the best option - ie. Motor. And tap the tick again. Hope this helps.
@@AdventureTimMedia wow thank you. Just wondering which stick ir lense is it? when your uber take a shot but not showing stick and the, shot is taken far from the stick? I csn only see their holding hands but not their stick. I have a max lens 2.0, is it this lens or different stick?
Hey @Happy.Snowwhite , thanks for your comment. I think you are referring to the Gopro Max or the Insta 360. With the latter it looks like you aren't holding a selfie stick at all.
Use the "Highlight Video" option instead to add a tag to a video whenever you have any important event on the road, that way you dont need to have the previous footage removed incase you have more than one event to be kept, The tagged or highlighted video(s) will appear with a small orange flag on your GoPro screen. Just delete those clips you dont need and download those highlited clips later through the Quick app (which sometimes wont connect to some phones) but you can simply remover the microSD card to save the footage to your PC or laptop.
Hey Camranh! Thanks for your comment, mate . The highlight tag is a good idea, but I rarely edit using the Quik app. I normally use Filmora or FCP and the tags don't work on those editing software's. Thanks for taking the time to write your comment , mate .
Hi Bugokish! Thanks for your comment. The mini would make a very good dashcam but you would have to keep it well ventilated to keep it from overheating - especially on summer days, so i would recommend having the AC pumping if its hot where you are. The mini has an inbuilt enduro so you might want to try connecting your mini to a usb port in your car to save it relying on battery and possibly generating unnecessary heat. I have the Hero Black and being able to remove the battery and connect it to a diff source has proven useful. Also , if you shoot at 1080 you will generate less heat than at 4k the same applies to frame rate. 24fps would be better than 60fps in this case. Also turning your display brightness down and ensuring your rear screen saver turns off at the lowest setting - 1 min - should help too. I hope this has been useful. Good luck.
Hey HarvL1! Thanks for your comment. in Australia only the top 10% of the windshield can be tinted so as long as it's not attached to that part of the windscreen you should be fine. hope this helps. BTW what part of the world are you in, mate?
Caution: The GoPro camera will get very hot from having the media mod attached while used as Dash Cam. It will also get hot by keeping a battery inserted as well! USB power only, w/o battery, negates the heat, but drawback is the camera cannot close out video w/o battery if power is lost! Possible solution is to either use a direct to battery USB connection or to use a small sized power brick via USB. That way the power to the GoPro will continue. And, if you are parked somewhere, such as grocery store, it will perform as a witness cam!
Hey Jeff, thanks for your comment I like your idea of hooking the gopro up to the power bank, but then the whole set up does get a little bulky. I can def see the benefit of solely powering with the USB but fear the abrupt shutdowns of the camera may not be a particularly great thing. My camera is always in the media mod but you are right, it does keep the heat in the camera as it restricts air flow. Thanks for your tips, I appreciate you taking the time to drop me a line. All the best.
Hey Anonymous O. Sorry to hear you have been having troubles with your camera. but thank you for your great question. I have been doing some testing tonight and I think I have worked it out. What happens is the five minute interval is recorded but is is broken up into 1 minute chunks, If you playback your video, your timer will count up to one minute and once it reaches that time, it will then start playing the following minute and so on, so you actually do have the five minute interval after all. Interestingly it looks like it only saves the footage as a single file 1 min file when you look at the playback menu on the rear of the gopro, but, when you put the micro SD card into your computer, you will see you actually have 5 one minute files! I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please reach out. I am happy to help. All the best.
Hey Wayne. Thanks for your question. Unfortunately I live in a climate where the coldest or gets to in winter is around 5degrees Celsius ( 41F ) , so i cant honestly answer your question. I know the new enduro battery is supposed to still perform well down to -10 degrees Celsius ( 14F ) but the older blue hero 9 batteries shut down at around 32F. hope this helps .
Hey Mase. thx again for your question. I just posted a video on Your topic on my channel. I hope it helps. This is the link . cheers ua-cam.com/video/ns-zTXqXPPE/v-deo.html
A very important thing to keep in mind (in case of a car collision) is that a GoPro does not have an impact sensor that will automatically save the collision footage like a true dash camera does, so if you don’t think to go back and review the footage to save the relevant portions, then the footage will likely be recorded over & lost.
Hey @karynbanksley7110 ! Thanks for your comment. You are correct, the GoPro does not have an impact sensor. A gopro is primarily an action camera and so it can not truly compare with a specialized dashcam and its features. However it does do a pretty decent job and you can film in 5.3K in the latest versions ( although you would get very big file sizes and increase the chance of over heating). There are several looping time intervals that you can select - up to the full card - but there is a danger footage may be recorded over if your interval is one of the smaller options. The intent of the video was to show the versatility of the GoPro and how it can be used for more than just action activities. Thanks again for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. All the best.
Is there anyone here that knows a suction mount that allows the GoPro te be positioned ABOVE the suction mount instead of dangling 5 inch under? I want the camera close to the top rim of the windshield (next to the rearview mirror) and the lense close the the glass, almost touching. TIA.
Hey Henq! Thanks for watching and your comment. You may be able to position the gopro the way you want with the suction mount but I've just found this mount on Amazon that may be even better. I haven't used it myself but Telesin normally make very good gopro products. All the best. Hey Alpha Bravo Cheesecake! Thanks for your comment. If the car is hot or lacks decent air circulation I've found there is a greater chance of overheating and shutdown. Taking out the battery and connecting the camera to a USB port can lessen the chance of overheating too. I haven't tried using the new enduro battery in the gopro to see if that makes a difference. gopro claims it works better in extreme temperatures so that may be a possibility. let me know if you'd like me to do a short on testing it out. hope this helps.
Hey SoluriZe, When the car is turned off there is no power being generated by the vehicle so unfortunately you would not be able to keep charging your gopro. For security sakes I would recommend taking the gopro with you when you leave your car. Thanks for your comment.
If you go to video mode and tap the video option button at the bottom of the screen, it will being up your recording choices. if looping is not there, scroll to the bottom, tap on the plus button. A mode screen will appear . Use the slider and drag icon down to the mid point for looping.
If you import the footage into your phone , then go into you gallery ( or photos mode ) and select your video. Tap on the edit option ( on Samsung it's a pencil icon ) and then press the crop function ( or rotate function) where you can rotate the footage as needed. Hope this helps. Let me know if you'd like me to make a video for you .
Hey integraz2000. You are right, gopro labs does have that feature. I haven't had a chance to delve deep into Labs yet but I will soon in a future video. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Parzival! Thanks for your comments. No version of Gopros come with internal memory. All their cameras require a SD card to capture all the footage and data. If you are getting a Hero 5 they can can take micro SD cards up to 256GB. SD cards are normally inexpensive and you can often get great deals on sites like Amazon. Hope this helps. All the best.
Hey Tom! thanks for your comment. Technically you can use the Hero 4. It will have at least full HD , which is 1080p, which will do a pretty good job as a dashcam.
Here from Linus Tech Tips. Normal dashcams are horrible

Simply awesome instructions. This is what I was looking for how to set up for looping in our RV as a dash cam. Thank you Tim.
using GoPro 10
I just came here from Linus Tech Tips recent video on dash cams. They're all basically the same camera lol...
@@jerradwilson i watched the same LTT video.
@@AdventureTimMedia Good to hear from you. Keep up the great work!
Amazing video. You explained it in detail. Thanks a lot.
Hey Rogerrabbit30! Thanks so much for your comments. Im glad you found it helpful. All the best.
@@Duran762 I'm not sure where you got that information from, I have a Garmin DashCam and it always starts, works perfectly.
@@youtuber_rakesh wow a rig to a power bank with passthrough tech to a gopro
Good video on showing how to use a GoPro as a dashcam.
I suppose if high detail is the only important factor then it could be a solution for some.
Here are some reasons I would choose not to:
* Price.
Thanks for the Video Tim.

Hey Smiler, Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately there is not option to turn off the mic while recording. You can delete audio while editing if you wish. Thanks for watching.

If you set this up using GoPro Labs you can have it Loop and turn on when you turn on your car or when there is motion. Just an FYI.
Hey Kenneth thanks for the great tip. I'll be sure to check it out !

@@AdventureTimMedia I completely forgot about the side windows 😂

I'm really tempted to pick up a GoPro to use as a good quality dash cam with this
Hey Danny. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video. I'm pretty excited to read your comments about the Gopro labs power triggers. I'm definitely going to do my own research on that one to find out more. There are some really cool things happening with labs. Hopefully some of the great ideas will end up on the Hero 11 when it is released next month. Thanks again for your great comments.
Postives about GoPro Hero 11 as dash cam is best video quality (important for license plates etc)
Downside : expensive , possible theft magnet, prone to overheating in warm climate, manual start (unless you download special firmware)
Thanks for video
Cheers.
Do it get hot & turn off? I have a go pro 10 & I plug it to a portable battery only record like 10 minutes & get to hot & turn off
@@tonymsp6 hey Tony.
@@AdventureTimMedia thanks Tim, much appreciate it.
Great tips on dashcam setup! Thanks!
Hey Jon! thanks for your comment! I'm glad you found my video helpful.
Hi, thanks for video. Did you try at night and can you see registration numbers on cars and road signs on playback?

Fantastic video I'm surprised GoPro hasn't made a dash cam yet!
Hey Khalid! Thanks for your comment. Thanks so much also for your kind words. You never know with GoPro what they will bring out next. I just think it is pretty cool how your action camera can be so versatile it can also double as a gopro! Thanks for watching and all the best to you, mate.
Nice. I didn't know about the loop mode, that may come in handy for other videos too. Thanks.
Hey Mike! Thanks for watching. The loop mode is definitely a hidden feature, it would probably come in handy for fishing videos too.
@@AdventureTimMedia I wish there was a way to set the time each chapter records. For whatever reason, the 11 gig files do not transfer over that well.

Hey Stephan! Thanks for watching and really glad you found my video helpful. Hope things are going great for you in your wonderful land of chocolate and beer! lol. all the best.
Can you turn the camera around on the mount to record yourself if you get pulled over for a traffic stop ?
so for an "Cheap" GoPro as an DashCam which Version should Someone get ?

Great Video, thanks for sharing
Hey Tony! Thanks for your kind words and for subscribing too. Awesome. All the best to you.
Sounds good @bill9989 . I hope it works great for you. Make sure yu put it in a Floaty before you hit the surf ! Lol😅 all the best.
@@AdventureTimMedia Thanks. I just ordered a floating grip.
Thanks! I’m going to try this with my GoPro Max camera.
Hey @gondwanalon ! That's great ! Let me know how you went. I can imagine you would pretty wild looking footage with the GoPro Max. Thanks for watching.

There are other action cameras that, when plugged in to power and in DashCam mode, the camera will turn on as you start the car.
Hey Othoap. thanks for your comment. I am not aware of other action cameras that have that facility but if you know any please let me know and I will look into them and maybe feature them in a future video. Most dash cams have the option to start filming when the car starts but I haven't heard of any action cameras that do. Thanks for watching. All the best.
Which ones?
Which one are those? I need please.
Sj4000 or sj5000
@@AdventureTimMedia I appreciate you so much for answering my question. I
Is there any other type of mount besides a suction cup? Suction cups have never worked for me.
After the 20 min will it shut off or just restart and keep recording?
Hey there This and That. After 20mins your gopro will start recording another 20min loop over top of what you have just recorded. You can adjust it to a different time length if you wish.
This is a great video, thank you for taking the time to teach us about it

Hey Watari ! Thx for watching and for your comments. I always use San Disk Extreme Pro micro SD cards. I currently use the 512 G in my hero 9. all the best
My dashcam is part of the anti collision camera array at the top of the windshield. My sister uses a camera called a DJI.
It will surely save many lives but yeah that glitch is a worry 😟
DJI make excellent action cameras too.
In 2024, which model do you recommend?
What model GoPro did you use, thanks
Hey pathfinder9able ! thanks for watching and your comments. I use a gopro hero 9. its a great little camera

Hey GY ! Thankyou for watching. I hope you found it helpful.
Shall we use the battery as inserted while using it as a car dash cam ? Please suggest
Hey Alok! thanks for watching and your question. I use the gopro battery but you can also connect it directly to a usb port in your car. if you do the latter it will shut down the minute you turn off the car. Always make sure you remove your cam from the car if you are going to park it somewhere so it doesn't make it a target for thrives I hope this helps. all the best
When you say “LOOPING INTERVALS RANGE FROM 5MIN TO THE ENTIRE SD CARD”
Dose it stop recording when the card is full, or does it automatically write over itself??
Hey Ruben. Thanks for your comment. The looping intervals can be set as high as Max, which means at that setting it will record until the card fills up and then start recording over the start of the video. I hope this helps. Cheers
Wow wonderful video. Whether it works on Go pro 8? or only 9,10 and Max? I need a GoPro dash cam.

@@AdventureTimMedia appreciate the info. I will look into the options in the camera when I get a chance. ✌🏽

Let me know if you'd like me to make one demonstrating this idea. cheers.

@@AdventureTimMedia I have a question, how to prevent gopro get rid of heating while recording? Without shutting off
Hey William.
Hi Injured TableTennisplayer. I really appreciate your support and I'm glad you liked my video. hope you get over your injury soon.
It would be cool if GoPro would actually just design a camera for dashcams specifically
Let me know if you would like me to explore this option in a future video. cheers.
I have gopro 12. where can I find looping? I just can't find it. Help
Motor.
What about overheating?
Im planning to buy gopro 11 mini and use it as a dashcam but im worried about overheating
Good luck.
Do you think the suction cup can damage window tint?
I have also the go pro 10 but when im looping 5 min it only records last 1 min.. can you help me?
Curious how freezing temps in winter (5-30 degrees) adversely affect the camera and will it even work when left in the car? Thanks!
Awesome!!!!!
Hey Freddie02f ! Thanks for watching I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for all your comments. I have made a night time gopro dashcam video that you can check out here. ua-cam.com/video/ns-zTXqXPPE/v-deo.html
Nice job
Thanks for watching Michael. I appreciate your support.
Thanks for this video but whats it like when it comes to recording at night?
Hey Mase . thats a great question. I'll do a test this week and get back to you . cheers
@@AdventureTimMedia curious whether you tested out the night vision?
Apologies for taking a while to get back to you Mase. I'm actually doing a test with it tonight. I'll post that video soon
Hey Mase. thx again for your question. I just posted a video on Your topic on my channel. I hope it helps. This is the link . cheers ua-cam.com/video/ns-zTXqXPPE/v-deo.html
Can it keep recording while charging?
Hi Junaid. Thanks for your comment. yes, the gopro can still record while it is charging
Have you ran into it overheating and shutting down?
Hey Alpha Bravo Cheesecake! Thanks for your comment. If the car is hot or lacks decent air circulation I've found there is a greater chance of overheating and shutdown. Taking out the battery and connecting the camera to a USB port can lessen the chance of overheating too. I haven't tried using the new enduro battery in the gopro to see if that makes a difference. gopro claims it works better in extreme temperatures so that may be a possibility. let me know if you'd like me to do a short on testing it out. hope this helps.
Is there a way to keep it charging after the car is off ?
Hey SoluriZe, When the car is turned off there is no power being generated by the vehicle so unfortunately you would not be able to keep charging your gopro. For security sakes I would recommend taking the gopro with you when you leave your car. Thanks for your comment.
❤great
Thanks for your watching, Dhillon! Hope things are going well for you in beautiful Niagara Falls! Btw are you on the Canadian side or the US side ?

I have the go pro 10 & can’t find the looping mode? Can you invert the footage on your phone after downloaded?
If you go to video mode and tap the video option button at the bottom of the screen, it will being up your recording choices. if looping is not there, scroll to the bottom, tap on the plus button. A mode screen will appear . Use the slider and drag icon down to the mid point for looping.
If you import the footage into your phone , then go into you gallery ( or photos mode ) and select your video. Tap on the edit option ( on Samsung it's a pencil icon ) and then press the crop function ( or rotate function) where you can rotate the footage as needed. Hope this helps. Let me know if you'd like me to make a video for you .
GoPro has dash cam with that Labs motion detection?
Hey integraz2000. You are right, gopro labs does have that feature. I haven't had a chance to delve deep into Labs yet but I will soon in a future video. Thanks for your comment.
Hi, hope you reply or anyone has an idea, I'm planning to buy a used gopro hero 5 does it has own internal memory or should I buy SD card?
Hi Parzival! Thanks for your comments. No version of Gopros come with internal memory. All their cameras require a SD card to capture all the footage and data. If you are getting a Hero 5 they can can take micro SD cards up to 256GB. SD cards are normally inexpensive and you can often get great deals on sites like Amazon. Hope this helps. All the best.

Can I use my GoPro 4 for dash cam?
Hey Tom! thanks for your comment. Technically you can use the Hero 4. It will have at least full HD , which is 1080p, which will do a pretty good job as a dashcam.
