- The WRX is about to enter V2, I realize I never really do much with the cars. And well that's going to start changing. While the WRX is getting torn down I wanted to have a little fun with it. Ended up actually breaking the 5-speed. Not the gear sets or anything I would have imagined.... We cracked the Case on the 5 Speed and now it just pees out fluid...

the WRX trans is definitely stronger than people give it credit for, my 2017 took 5 launches on a prepped strip at 4800rpm @6psi with 255's and flat foot shifting with 23psi before the factory clutch gave out, it was enough to lift the front and spin the tires, now it has a single disk rated for 800-900 so i never have to change it again 🤣
So far I’ve made a good amount of 3rd gear pulls, a handful of launches, 3rd to 4th gear full boost pulls to redline and one 142mph pull. The hatch still lives on over 40k on stock block with all the goodies pushing 382wheel at 20 PSI on stock turbo.
I always run Motul 300v 5w50 , 5w40, Redline 5w40, or Mobil 5w50. Oil gets changed every 3k even earlier if I beat on it.
Keep up with maintenance, run good fuel, run genuine good parts, and tune tune tune for everything. Treat it well with attention to detail and take care of oiling, fuel, and cooling along with any and all power mods.
Most importantly drive like a sensible human being, don’t go full boost below 2500rpm and don’t just floor it, ease into full throttle.
Done right, these cars WILL take care of you and they are remarkably safe just ask my 30year experience paramedic/firefight father who cut hundreds if not thousands of people out of cars.
Facts, I was intentionally dumping yhr clutch as hard as possible to send as much shock I could and it still barley broke. Tbh some JB weld on the hairline crack would prob fix it to keep going. But they're not bad cars like people make em out to be
@@Smeedia it’s honestly a shame that these cars get such a bad reputation for their engines. You really only hear horror stories, are there flawed cars with defects out there that have issues even after all scheduled maintenance? Sure, but that’s the cost of ownership, if you can’t handle the cost of ownership then it may not be the right car and that’s okay. Don’t rush these cars, patience and timing is key to doing it right.

Reminds me of this one time my buddy and back in 2020 test lunched a 07 Chevy duramax big turbo diesel to try out a "certain" delete + tune , to see some coal roll. The truck lunched beautifully, for like 4 ft. But
we left the whole rear axle and drive shadt behind😂

It broke the stupidest way ans would have kept going lol, we cracked the 5 speed case and that was it 😭🤣
Put spill pans in your chemicals cabinet. I use the base of molded plastic bins that you get for storing stuff underneath beds, etc. That way, if something leaks, it is contained and it won't find it's way to an ignition source. Car guy and 35 years experience in the chemical industry speaking here. If shit can happen, it will.
Smart, my other chemical cabinet leaks so I'll do something like this for both of them now. Appreciate the tip!

A destroyed 2.5. Basically a 2.5 with 2.0 crank Thst revels to 8/9k.

Fun fact I always launch my sti at 6000-5900rpm depending on the road. Been doing it for years and at 190,000 miles has had 0 issues. I’ve done this in my neighborhood and let’s just say they don’t like it lol

1st gear wasn't the problem my GP wrx, the pressure on 2nd gear caused the counter shaft to drift and grind-pit the valleys of the 2nd gear teeth. Major warranty repair #3 of 4 on my old '11 swp hatch, and that was before it hit 30k miles.
Now that we know the 5spd held up (mostly) to the abuse, I wonder if you could've pushed more power and possibly broken the hp record 🤔
Possible, it's not the HP that kills them though, it's the torque 😅

So do you think it's leaking because the two halves of the transmission moved? Would be another great tear down video to see if the transmission was damaged and to see the rod bearing wear marks, bearing wear, oil pump, head gaskets.

I lost 3rd gear today on my way to work in my 06 wrx. I shifted from 2nd to 3rd, there was a loud clank noise with a small grind noise (like a synchro grind) and now I have no 3rd gear at all. When driving it home the sound it's making is not a grinding sound but something is loose. I'm thinking I may have broke the 3rd gear shifter fork. All other gears seem to be fine. Thankfully I have a spare 5mt from my old 07 wrx and will be changing it this weekend.
Watching your videos makes me wanna build my car up. But then I realize I am in college and I have no space or time even if I was at home. And the fact its my only car lol

Of course it’s not gonna break on three launches! 😂 I launched mine at least 20 times before it broke the synchro. That’s with a 6 puck, KEIN mount and KEIN blast plate. Who knows how many times it was launched before I bought it as well.

I kinda feel like we got a bit gypped on the promised content. 3 aggressive launches shouldn't kill a car or the 5 speed. I think we were all hoping for a torture test to really see where the limits are and how much abuse they can take and how overblown the unreliability claims are.
I was hoping to have the opportunity to do it a bit sooner but things slowed down quite a bit and I need to get these guys their cars back so had to compromise somewhat

Along the drivers side of the case its about a 2" long hairline crack that's weeping fluid

I blew my STI a few weeks ago just driving it around town it’s do able. Or you can cold start and start launching it from there 😬

I’m so used to people not launching the 5 speed, I forgot this was a 5 speed lol. A 5 speed build, instead of the typical 6 speed swap, would be pretty sweet.
For the cost for a 5 speed build you might as well do a 6 speed swap, they're not the most affordable option 😅

Shouldve done it when the weather was dry and the car hooked better. Then we will see how tough that 5spd is. I also own a hatch and really was looking forward to you destroying it. Lol. I've only seen videos and read from people saying their 'glass' trans exploding from only '07 and earlier owners.

Big hype for all this haha. Its a bit late but both the 6062 or 6466 wouldve been the more ideal option. I had a 6262 on mine and it did "ok" but hope it works out for ya mang!

"i dont get it", the reason why it has no problem taking the power is, its not getting the power. the clutch is slipping, so nothing else is getting anywhere close to full power. that was not a test of the trans strength, just how much clutch smoke you can smell.
Could smell so much I could taste it, that clutch was already on its way out.
