So thry were writing for an audience that were assumed to know the basics because it was, i dunno if cultural is the right word, just the most practical i guess.
Love the subtle humor of them sitting around the earthen oven in period costume and modern shoes and Joe continuing to eat while Jon does his usual freeze frame at the end of the episode. I don't know if these were planned but they're hilarious.
I know, right? The video came on with auto-play while I was in another room, and I instantly recognized that voice! "Wait... Really?!" *Runs back to the computer*
I love the vibe these two create. It’s like Joe is the subtlety mischievous, younger brother aiming to please, and Jon is the kind-hearted, patient, older brother serving as the guide.
Joe's demeanor is so comfortable and relaxing for me. I am a worry wart and constantly in high key. Joe's TV show would relax me and basically help me to sleep.
This really is a cathartic and endearing pause from the hectic modernity of day to day life, especially when these times seem so contentious. Thank you both, with the utmost sincerity.
Jon - “Now its time to work on our birds.” Joe - “I love that sentence.” Jon - “Now we gotta butter the inside and outside of the birds.” Joe - “I love that sentence even more.” 😂🤣😂🤣
There's been a lot of Joe Pera episodes now, you need to go back and watch them. This is truly the best pairing, Joe Pera BELONGS on the Townsend's and Sons channel
Has anyone asked how Joe and Jon met? I would be delighted to know but the idea of Jon catching Joe's show one late night or Joe relaxing to Townsends is such a wonderful image.
Yes because enabling something that does harm is a good thing, right? Do you realise what addiction is, have you ever been addicted to anything? Real addiction, not "oh I really, really like such and such". Addiction is always bad and always harmful and you're here in the comments going on about how much you love it.. People like you make me sick.

I've been a fan of Joe Pera's comedy for years, and I have loved all these videos with him. He looks as nervous as I would be, but I think he showed some excellent skill in creating the thatch. Great job, Jon and Joe.

I really enjoyed this Joe guy quite a bit, I enjoyed their conversation. Joe asks off questions and John responds well to them. I can see Joe is a bit socially awkward, but comfortable with John, that always gives great content.
@King Kamala He's not making fun of anyone with his act. He's impersonating the homely, easy going personalities you see from older folks around the Great Lakes. I find it pretentious to believe he is making fun of slow people with his act.
@King Kamala I don't think it's an act. I know some folks who have worked with him or bumped into him around the city. His demeanor here is true to life. The character he plays on the show has a similar demeanor, but is also very socially naive. Here, Joe is leaning into the style of 18th Century Cooking with his jokingly simplistic questions and remarks. He's a good guy, and his tv show is the kind of show everybody should be watching.
The chemistry is great, here! Watching Jon watch over Joe, sort of feels like a loving father teaching his son a craft. The two are probably of similar age, but the wisdom that Jon holds in this type of activity, truly makes him a father-type figure, here. Bless you both, and may the new year find you well.
This was my favorite episode with Joe in it, the conversation between the two was very nice! :) I hope Townsend gets a cameo on next season of Joe Pera Talks With You!
Not gonna lie, I learned about Joe through the Townsend videos, even though I'm in (the top end of) his target demographic. He meshes so well with your style without making it seem like he's making fun in his dry comedy style.
Having grown up in the Midwest, there are some people here (albeit usually older) that approach life similar to Joe Pera’s character. They have a slow, laid back personality that rarely gets ruffled, they tend to live rurally, and have their own way of going about life. They may not live the type of life we’re used to, but they’re the salt of the earth.
The fact that joe has this going is a testament to his character and his actual interests, elated he is here after knowing about Townsend for a lil bit now
Ive been watching both joe pera and townsends seperately for a couple years now. Totally unexpected but i absolutely love that theyve been collaborating lately. Seriously, after watching Pera's Adult Swim stuff, i was very surprised to stumble across these vids in my feed
Please continue partnering with Mr. Pera. I was a fan of the show before, but I'm an even bigger fan now. I often found it difficult to recommend a period cooking show to friends, but once I learn they're a fan of Joe's, then it becomes a real easy gap to bridge.
This channel just makes me so happy. It feels like Mr. Rogers when I was a kid, they’re both just super interested and curious and innocent. There’s not enough of this in the world today.
It's funny thinking about old times, flour was one of the few things they could always get some more of, and that was worth playing around with.. so you get pasta in all manner of shapes, you get pie crusts with elaborate comical forms, specially shaped buns, pretzels, you could try something new and not risk wasting it because it's going to taste good regardless.
That outro scene is hilarious!!! John looking to the side as he freeze frames for the outro was such a nice touch and I love the recipe, never really thought about pies having bones in them but it's a wonderfully delicate way to cook something.
I love his questions. The questions are very simple and yet interesting and causes great conversations and gets john to start thinking. I love Joe, bring him back ASAP
One of your best. Joe is a treasure. He has a very kind heart based on my observation. The world would be a better place with more people like him. On this matter I speak from experience. 🙏
You guys are just so adorable I could just eat you up! More please, of Jon and Joe. So entirely endearing. The world needs more men like you. The frame of them sitting on the stools waiting for their pie just puts me over the edge!
Why is this just such a sweet video? They both seem to have similar inquisitive personalities, and have genuine interest in this recipe, I would love to see more of Joe on the channel!
I'm a poet and I get a poetic feeling watching this channel. I am also an artist and it's also very artful experience to be part of modern but passed experience in one place. I use to work for a local museum in my hometown. I was trained how to behave like the people from 1800's and 1700's. I loved it so much I volunteered right after I graduated highschool. I had a part time job and volunteered to study at the museum.
That talk of skinning an animal, reforming its meat ans stuffing it back in the skin reminded me of a couple of dishes from Eastern European Jewish cuisine that my family still makes, and a lot of other families too. One is filled goose neck (pretty much what you described) and gefillte fish (stuffed fish, same deal). So it's not as crazy as Joe might think.
Can you describe that fish to me? Like do you take the fish skin off and cook the flesh then put it back in like a sausage. Personally I like fish skin but I wouldn't think to remove it before cooking the fish.
Joe has way more patience than I do! I would've just sprinkled the pasta on the bottom and been done with it -- but it probably wouldn't have turned out anywhere near as pretty as Joe's did.
John thank you. I was about to catch up on news of the day when I saw this video for thatched roof pie so I escaped for 20 minutes which I really needed!

Loved this video! We had never heard of Joe Pera until your videos and we now enjoy his content. BTW, Joe is sporting some sweet 18th century running shoes out by the earthen oven!
Just when you thought Townsends couldn't get more cozy, the pairing of Joe and John together are taking us to coziness levels we didn't think possible!
Yup. More Joe Pera please!! One of the biggest factors of living in the time frame that is depicted here was that things took time, there was literally and I mean literally nothing else to distract you from the task at hand. Whatever time it took to do something is the time it took and that was your focus, that's ALL, your focus was. I feel there should be an episode to emphasize that fact that you had so much time on your hands, and yet, it took so much time to do much of ANYTHING at all!
DO keep in mind, there was ALOT of work to be done. I was thinking to myself that this pie took WAY too long for just a side dish. And just like all chefs, they would have been using the baking time to make other things, not sit around and watch the oven do oven stuff.
Something about Joe being here (new to the content) gives me another another level of appreciation for Townsends. Just gives me a look into his sense of humor and a little about who he is. Love it.
This filled my heart with such incredible joy. Brought back memories of cooking with my younger brother as he cracked little jokes and asking *all* the questions he could. Love both of you and your incredible individual content creations, but gosh this was something truly special.
I know this video isn’t exactly recent, but I just re-watched it. I love your dedication to accuracy and your positive sweet soul. Thank you for having Joe on your channel and introducing me to him. You’re a bright spot on my YT feed on myriad levels.

Love it.
You two are fun to watch together. Joe asks all the right questions that we wouldn't think to ask.
This filled my heart with such incredible joy. Brought back memories of cooking with my younger brother as he cracked little jokes and asking *all* the questions he could. Love both of you and your incredible individual content creations, but gosh this was something truly special.
Loved it, thanks Jon and Joe! (and crew!)
Joe is amazing. The effort to stay in character throughout is just mind-blowing
I enjoy Joe’s presence, comments and humour! Keep it up Joe!
Loving the Joe Pera collabs! Keep ‘em coming!
This is absolutely incredible. I’m a big fan of both these dudes
Oh man, seeing two of my favorite UA-cam personalities engaging together on this fabulous fringe history has given me so much unexpected joy!
WE LOVE JOE!! He needs to be on more often! ❤️❤️❤️
I know this video isn’t exactly recent, but I just re-watched it. I love your dedication to accuracy and your positive sweet soul. Thank you for having Joe on your channel and introducing me to him. You’re a bright spot on my YT feed on myriad levels.
Joe knows his bird pie marketing. A 3-bird pie is obviously better than a mere 2-bird pie.
Occasionally I binge watch Townsend and I'm so glad I didn't wait too long. It is such a blessing for the world that people like these two exist.
