Peggy Ryan was pure show business.I can watch this over and over again. Just makes you feel good and a little sad for what we have now.

I love her facial expressions from 2:20 to 2:30. Shows her great comedic talents and conveys what she's thinking without saying a word. First she's "I've got this no problem," then she "uh oh, I've got to put some serious work in to show-up these other dancers." Great ability that only comes from years of experience which she already had even at this young age.

Wow, so cool that I found this! I remember taking dance lessons from her in Vegas and performing in a Christmas show she put on when I was a kid!

I never knew of Peggy Ryan until I noticed her in the Shirley Temple movie 'Miss Anne Rooney' (1942) where she played the part of Myrtle. I think she was only 18 but her effervescent energy and boundless sense of fun practically stole the show from everyone else in her dancing scenes. I've been searching out her stuff ever since. A real performer and a girl with golden feet. They just don't make stars like Peggy Ryan anymore.

Peggy always seemed to play the sweet and goofy gal-pal, until she started to dance... what a dancer, and what an athlete.

    I watched 'Here Come The Co-Eds' (the Abbott & Costello film from which this comes) the other day, and I have to say I quite fell in love with Peggy from her first appearance, launching herself at Lou Costello from behind a bush;
"Hello butterball, you're new here, aren'tcha - My name's Patty - what's yours? Never mind, you can tell me some other time (slaps Lou's cheeks twice) - see you later! (giggles and walks off.)
    Lou Costello: She's cuuuute!
She's great in all her scenes, with some wonderful reactions to the action going on, and seems to get on with Costello as if she's worked with him for years.
Here's how she's described on IMBD: "No glamor girl, Peggy had a very plaintive face, prominent nose and gangly figure", but I think she was as lovely as she was talented, and you can see in that tap routine just how talented she was!

+Back to the Blues IMDB also does state how talented she is and has a buoyant personality. I agree that they are off the mark in describing her and she is more attractive than they state and certainly does not have a gangly figure.

A fantastic dance number here. Peggy reminds me a bit of Jane Withers, with her facial expressions and enthusiasm!

I can see that. I know Jane Withers sang in movies, not sure if she danced, so they would have made a good pair.

I remember watching this movie in netflixs and the person that stood out was Peggy. I had never heard of her before but after watching her I can say I am a real fan. She did steal the movie. Costello gets old and almost unlikable the more you watch him, so Peggy was a breath of fresh air.

I love the photobombing extra at about 1:34 who bounced a pom pom upper left hand corner. No way people weren't going to notice HER,by heck!
Otherwise, Peggy is cute - she's all legs and she shows 'em for the boys at war - thanks for posting!

Louis Da Pron choreographed eight movies in 1945 alone, though he became better known for his TV stints on Jerry Lewis's, Donald O'Connor's and Perry Como's series. O'Connor of course was already a colleague of Peggy Ryan in the teens-versus-repressive adults musicals which Universal ground out in imitation of Metro's with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.
Universal was hooked on formulaic product: 'Here Come the Co-eds' was one more example of Bud and Lou running riot in a staid institution. The budget was only $700,000, and the returns indicated staleness; soon the team would be confronting horror monsters from the Universal archive instead of generals or college deans.
For pint-sized Peggy it was a chance to grow up a little (she was 21), albeit swapping Donald for Lou as her love interest. In 'Jumping on a Saturday Night' she does a routine reminiscent of Ann Miller's at Columbia, backed by an ad-hoc assemblage of somewhat heavy-footed cheerleaders and Phil Spitalny's highly proficient all-girl orchestra. The song was by Jack Brooks (ly) and Edgar Fairchild (m).

I am was always amazed how these Bixby girls could spontaneously just get out of the stands and pull off such a coordinated dance and musical number at the drop at the hat. It seemed like people in the thirties and forties always did these sort of things.

I GREW UP WATCHING ABBOTT AND COSTELLO BECAUSE WPIX SHOW THEIR MOVIES EVERY SUNDAY MORNING, AND BESIDES GINNY SIMMS IN HIT THE ICE-PEGGY RYAN ALWAYS STAYED ON MY MIND,THEY USED TO SHOW A LOT OF OLD MOVIES SO I GOT TO SEE HER IN STAR MAKER WITH BING CROSBY WHEN I WAS ABOUT 7 OR EIGHT YEARS OLD, SHE WAS 13 AND IT WAS HER MOVIE DEBUT AND SHE IMITATED ELEANOR POWELL AND DID IT PERFECTLY EXCEPT FOR THE SPINNING TAPS MISS POWELL DID,THE MOVIES SHE DID WITH DONALD O'CONNOR KINDA DID NOTHING FOR ME EXCEPT PROVE WHAT A FANTASTIC DANCER SHE WAS AND LIKE DONALD ,ONLY SOLO DANCING COULD PROVE IT,I'VE SEEN HER AND HUSBAND RAY MACDONALD ON THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB AND AT THE TIME THEY HAD A VERY SUCCESSFUL LAS VEGAS ACT AND WERE GUESTS,ONCE AGAIN SHE IMITATED ELEANOR POWELL AND HAD GOTTEN POWELL'S PIOUETTED TAPS DOWN,NEVER THOUGHT SHE WAS ANYTHING OTHER THAN A LOVELY DANCER WITH A TWISTED SENSE OF HUMOR,THIS CONTAINS SOME OF THE DANCE STEPS THAT SHE TAUGHT LAS VEGAS SHOWGIRLS TO DO AS A CHORUS AND IN UNISON, I STILL LOVE IT WHEN SHE DOES THE INTRICATE TAPS AND SPINS THEN COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP AND CLAPS HER HAND AS IF SHE'S SAYING, YUP! THAT WAS THE SHIT WASN'T IT?

She could certainly dance...not so sure about the singing. But what strange lighting -- all lit from behind, why no spotlight or highlight on Ryan or the other dancers? And what's with that 'thumping' underneath the taps?

Those movies where low budged and they produced them on pretty much a bi-monthly basis so don't expect fancy lighting.
