- Dresden is the capital city of the State of Saxony located in the former East Germany on the banks of the River Elbe. It is an attractive city with a rich history dating back as far as the late 12th century, to a Sorbian settlement called Drežďany (meaning either "woods" or "lowland forest-dweller"). It is one of the most visited cities in Germany with 4.7 million people a year staying in its hotels and guest houses.
In this video we take a tour in T4DMT ČKD Tatra tram around part of the city’s tram network giving passengers the opportunity to see many of the historical buildings and sights that make this such a popular destination for tourists.

The origin of the tram network can be traced back to 1872, when the first horse-drawn line opened between the city centre and the village of Blasewitz, now a borough of Dresden. Today’s network is approximately 134.0 km (83.3 miles) serving 154 tram stops. The tracks are built to a
unique gauge of 1,450 mm (4 ft 9 3⁄32 ins) sometimes called the ‘Dresden Gauge’.

Thank you Tim for yet another superb video, taken in one of my favourite cities. Thank you especially for the fact that on the bridges over the Elbe you briefly left the 'Driver's Eye View' to show us the old city in all its glory. The Dresden Frauenkirche is (inside) the most beautiful building I have ever visited!
Hi, I really enjoyed my time in Dresden and the tram ride is a great way to see the city. I have uploaded another video to be made public on Sunday showing more of the city, I wish I'd had longer to explore, it's certainly a place I'd like to return to.

Enjoy all the different types of buildings and all the wide streets. And of course the smooth ride around the city.
It's a very nice city, with plenty to see and do. The people I met were friendly, they want visitors to enjoy their city and riding the trams is a convenient way to see some of the sights, there are also regular tour busses.

Hello Robert, for me Dresden shows man at his most destructive and at his most constructive. I wish more UK cities had kept their tram networks, it would have been a much cheaper option than building new ones, I believe its a similar story in Sydney. Happy Easter from Tim and Karen 🍺.

The good old indestructible Tatra. You can say what you like about the Eastern bloc but their hardware goes on for ever. (Worth bearing in mind also that the historic centre of Dresden was completely reconstructed under the DDR back to exactly how it was before it was destroyed during the war.)
Hello Andrei, there are still plenty of Tatra trams around, especially in Prague. Another East European company, Skoda also made robust trams and locomotives. Dresden looks awesome, it was a good decision to build it back as it was.
"everlasting" trams are not a particular eastern bloc thing, Dresden has a couple of much older heritage trams of german production running and around the world you will find countless tram types which ran for generations very much like the Tatra ... in the old days trains and trams simply were build differently, the frames were massive and the electrics/mechanics simple. Doesnt take too much effort to prevent those beauties from braking apart. Most trams which survive the first two decades in service without major flaws showing up can be kept around for many more decades with minimal effort. They then usually only fall out of service because the demands of the network and costumers change, not because they fall apart physicly.
Very nice video. The 'tour' took in what was left of the beautiful 'old city', and showed what had to rebuilt quickly after WW2, together with the best of the latest development that was going up. If it hadn't been for a certain 'house-painter' there would have been a lot more beautiful old buildings, - WILL NO DELUSIONARY POWER MAD HUMAN ever learn from History. - All done in a lovely old Tatra tram. 😊👍.
Hello Christopher, Dresden was a pleasant surprise, it was the most beautiful city I saw in East Germany, showing it was a good decision to rebuild the old buildings as they were, rather than replacing them soul-less square buildings as happened in the UK cities of Portsmouth and Plymouth. The world would certainly be a better place without power mad lunatics screwing things up.

@@christopherlovelock9104The city's elders are doing all they can to improve the way it looks and from what I saw they look to be doing a pretty good job and it's important to remember that before 1989 the city was still hidden behind the iron curtain. It's come a long way and I'm sure it will look better with every passing year. As for power mad tyrants, we are on the same page.

Историю Дрездена можно рассматривать, когда трамвай движется к окраинам, сначала к старому городу, большая часть которого была перестроена в том виде, в котором он был до Второй мировой войны, затем к зданиям советской эпохи и, наконец, к новым пригородам, очень похожим на любой крупный европейский город.

Теперь я могу свободно путешествовать по Восточной Европе и исследовать места, которые когда-то были недоступны, чтобы открыть для себя такие места, как прекрасный город Дрезден с его увлекательными узкоколейными паровыми железными дорогами. I think in Samara are full T3. The T4s were designed for tighter tracks and were quite a bit narrower than their adult versions.
Dresden was horribly fire bombed during WW11, but now looks like it has made a very nice recovery. It looks clean and pretty much graffiti free. 😎
Dresden was rebuilt as it was and now the stone work has had chance to age a little, it's hard to tell which parts are original an which parts were rebuilt. It's a lovely city with plenty to see and do.

These pipes carry groundwater to the river which is being pumped from constructions pits so they don't flood

These pipes are used for draining ground water, mostly from construction sides. In some areas you can also spot pipes for district heating.
Okay, a brief read tells me the track width is a bit wider than the regular Standard Gauge but narrower than the Broad Gauge on which Victoria's(Australia) trans run.

The sound is not right for Tatra T4, too smooth. Has the engine and the electric system been upgraded?
Hi, I believe the Dresden Tatra T4 trams were upgraded with new traction gear in the 1990's, although it's hard to find information about the upgrade on the internet. This is what I did find -
The modernization normally includes:
Restoration of the car body
Digital/Electronic destination sign installation
Acoustic information system
Installation of new traction motors
Thyristor-Controlled traction system for the motors.
Re-design of the interior, which varies by city and transit authority.
Pantograph replacements (also depends on the transport authority)
@@Timsvideochannel1, thank you very much! T3, T4 and T5 are the workhorse in my city, but I can't believe how smoothly and silently the Dresden tram moves. Ours rattle and clank all the way. Must be old chassis plus old rails.

2:50 Okay, back in English now. I assume the track is set to Standard Gauge(4ft, 8.5inch), but it looks like Broad Gauge(5Ft, 3inch) to me!

How is it that Woolworths stores, 5:01, are still trading in Germany after closing down in the UK and elsewhere?
Woolworths is an American owned company with shops throughout Europe. The last UK shops closed on 6th January 2009. Another former UK high-street shop that still trades in much of Europe is C&A.
They're still going in Australia too

It's a shame that Dresden (and other German cities) couldn't handle the grown-up version of these iconic trams. T4 has always been perceived only as a smaller substitute for T3..
At least the T4 varient maintains the familiar outline of the once common tatra tram family.

T4 is the same like standard T3. Only is reduced in the width. Bc of the request of German transport companies. Reason was limited profile of some parts of the tracks.
So T3 has stantard width as all other Tatra's trams (3,50 m) but T4 only 2,20 m

Hi, East and West Germany are noticeably different, even though may years have passed since the reunification of the country. The Saxony region is beautiful with plenty of quaint villages. Dresden is a great place to visit, especially the three steam worked narrow gauge railways radiating from the city because they are all pass through beautiful scenery, dotted with pretty towns and villages. I hope you get there some day 😊.
