  • Once the standard gauge railway from Chemnitz to Chomutov via Annaberg and Vejprty was opened to traffic in 1872, attention turned to connecting the former mining town of Oberwiesenthal (Germany's highest town) to the Saxon Railway system. Plans were made in 1884 to build a narrow gauge railway between Cranzahl to Oberwiesenthal, although construction didn't start until 1896. The line opened to traffic on 20th July 1897, proving popular, it carried 67756 by the end of its first year in operation, tourism continued to boost passenger numbers and special transporter waggons enabled the railway to carry standard gauge waggons with around 30 a day serving the quarry at Hammerunterwiesenthal alone. After 1990 traffic began to decline with freight services ceasing in 1992, in 1994 ownership was transferred to Deutsche Bahn and plans were made to either close the railway or sell it.
    To celebrate the railway's centenary communities along the route got together with the Pressnitz Valley Railway and the Lößnitzgrund Railway to organized a festival week featuring narrow gauge locomotives and rolling stock from all over Germany operating an intensive schedule on all three lines. The popular event attracted over 40000 visitors, leading to local districts making plans to acquire the railway. On June 1st 1998 BVO Bahn GMB took over operating the line and in 2007 the Saxon Steam Railway Company took over, giving the railway a new name “Fichtelbergbahn” to reflect its new roll as a tourist line serving resorts along the route, the line soon acquired a new status recognise throughout Germany and beyond, especially in winter transporting winter sports enthusiasts to the ski areas of Oberwiesenthal.
    Please sit back and enjoy a ride along this scenic railway line with one of the railway's powerful steam locomotives to the ski resort town of Oberwiesenthal.

      Hello Hans, this was the last of the railways we visited around Dresden, the return trip was even better because the sun was behind the train. The next East German railway we visited features plenty of snow. I'll be off to Hungary, the Czech republic and Austria in the middle of this month where hopefully I will be able to shoot more driver's eye videos. Thanks for links. Cheers 🍺. Tim.

    Tim, I watch many of your videos on my big screen TV. Pleaase add the track gauge to your description, i.e. gauge 2 Ft. etc. Helps us to know the size of the equipment and zero in on the ones we like to watch. I love the scale of 2 ft track gauge locomoties. Thanks Ron

      I've added this to the video description "Track Gauge 750 mm ( 2 ft 5 1/2 inches)". It's something I do usually include as standard in the description, I must have suffered a blonde moment when typing it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Cheers. Tim.

    Continental heritage railways don't go in much for hanging baskets, gas lights, repro posters and that sort of...stuff, do they? Maybe that's no bad thing.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Рік тому

      It was January, which may explain the lack of hanging baskets. These railways are 365 day a year operations running scheduled passenger trains. It's hard to know whether or not to refer to them as heritage Railways, although they are clearly tourist railways. I imagine they look much as they did 50 years ago, maybe I need to book a summer trip to see if the hanging baskets do come out. However you look at them, they are well worth visiting.

    Unterwiesenthal and Unterneudorf, two "Claytons" stations! - The station you have when you haven't got a station! The "Claytons" term comes from an early-1980s(or late 1970s) TV ad for a brand of non-alcoholic beverage called "Claytons" and promoted as *the drink you have when you're not having a drink!* These two..... er..... stations(?) have nothing more than signage to identify themselves. They have no ticket office or waiting rooms, not even so much as a platform.

    if you take the first four letters of Fichtelbergbahn and translated into english you would get spruce meaning clean

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Рік тому

      There are also a lot of Spruce forests in the area. "Fichtelbergbahn" was chosen to relaunch the railway under new ownership as it better described the area served. Wasn't "Pine" also a band name for cleaning products?

      @@Timsvideochannel1 More specific, the name was chosen due to Oberwiesenthal (the final stop) being situated at the bottom of the Fichtelberg mountain (1214 m), the highest in Saxony and third in Germany. Its name however comes frome the spruce trees in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) area along the border to Czechia. ;-)

      Hi Bob, like you I believe in free speech and I regularly comment on videos and some comments do get removed, I suspect it's the channels that remove them rather than UA-cam and some of those channels do report commentators to UA-cam knowing that UA-cam can't possibly check every comment and are likely to just issue a ban for a period of time. Not sure about the three strikes and your out threat, although that is the case for creators who receive 3 copyright claims. I'm glad you are back and that you enjoyed he ride. Cheers 🍺.Tim.
