The Democratic Party is the longest-existing political party in the US, and arguably the world. But in its over 180 year existence, it's completed a remarkable ideological and geographic transformation. Originally a staunch defender of Southern slavery, the party now wins the support of most nonwhite voters. Once an advocate of rural interests against coastal elites, the party now draws much of its strength from cities and coastal areas. This video tells the tale of the Democratic Party's origins, its various metamorphoses, and the sources of its strength - and weaknesses - today.

Woodrow Wilson is the hero you chose? Here's something this facetious film won't tell you:
"During Wilson's term, segregation was ordered in the Washington offices of the Navy, the Treasury, and the Postmaster General, and photographs became required for all new federal job applicants. After black leaders pressed him, President Wilson explained he was trying to 'reduce friction,' and that he 'sincerely believe[d] it to be in their interest.' Under Wilson, racial segregation was quickly implemented at the Post Office Department, and many African-American employees were downgraded and even fired. Employees who were downgraded were transferred to the dead letter office, where they did not interact with the public. The few African Americans who remained at the main post offices were put to work behind screens, out of customers' sight."

Thank you for these two videos! I think they show perfectly how meaningless partisanship is. There is really no such thing as a Democrat or a Republican. Political parties are defined at each moment by their leadership, their voter base, and other key actors they want to draw support from.
Maybe we need to recognize that we all want the same thing: a safe humane and thriving environment in which to live and prosper. We might focus on different issues but we have to recognize that the concerns on the other side are just as real. And we might disagree on the methods but on what basis should we start hating and feeling disgust toward each other?
Before it's too late we need to re-learn to feel empathy toward the people we strongly disagree with.

When you think about racial equality and civil rights, which political party comes to mind? The Republicans? Or, the Democrats? Most people would probably say the Democrats. But this answer is incorrect.
Since its founding in 1829, the Democratic Party has fought against every major civil rights initiative, and has a long history of discrimination.
The Democratic Party defended slavery, started the Civil War, opposed Reconstruction, founded the Ku Klux Klan, imposed segregation, perpetrated lynchings, and fought against the civil rights acts of the 1950s and 1960s.
In contrast, the Republican Party was founded in 1854 as an anti-slavery party. Its mission was to stop the spread of slavery into the new western territories with the aim of abolishing it entirely. This effort, however, was dealt a major blow by the Supreme Court. In the 1857 case Dred Scott v. Sandford, the court ruled that slaves aren’t citizens; they’re property. The seven justices who voted in favor of slavery? All Democrats. The two justices who dissented? Both Republicans.
