  • Hi everybody, and welcome to my "stevenofpa" UA-cam Channel!
    Two ways to test fuel pressure on a Jeep Cherokee XJ. This video shows you what it's like to see these two different types of fuel pressure tests being done on a 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4 Door SUV. First is a non-running fuel pressure test by jumpering out the fuel pump relay. The second test is an engine running fuel pressure test. bleed down tests are also performed along with a fuel flow test. it's not exactly scientifically accurate with measuring beakers and such, but it gives you a good idea of how well the pump is running, and the condition of the flow-back preventer or check valve. It's pretty cool! This is good great awesome cool tremendous powerful the best ever and will always like it's awesomeness! Thanks, that's sweet! Dude! Check it out! Jeeps are cool. this test also works on Wrangler YJ TJ and Grand Cherokee WJ and probably many other fuel injected vehicles with gasoline powered engines and motors. so try it if you want but do it on your own expense. Don't try this at home, we're what we call pros. Duh!

    Almost everything about the XJ has been so mechanic friendly. I haven’t done research yet to make sure there’s a rubber section in the feed/return lines yet (for pinching them off for diagnosing fuel issues), but there IS the schrader valve. It’s almost insane, even the (automatic, specifically the AW4) tranny has a drain bolt.

      Are you trying to be funny? all automatic transmissions have drain bolts

      @@lh1678 No, they do not. My 1966 Mustang had no drain of any kind in the stock transmission. The only way to change the transmission fluid was to drop the pan and it was an unbelievable mess.

    I just installed a new pump and got the long start. Testing results.
    Key only on--- No pressure
    Running--------- 50psi
    Shutdown------- goes to zero immediately.
    Glad I cut a hole in my floor. 🙂

    Just found your channel.
    I have a 95 Cherokee 4.0.
    I got code 12 and 13.
    Rough idle,No power , feels like limp mode.
    MAP sensor...
    Replaced with new.
    No change.
    Quite a few things can fool the PCM into thinking the MAP sensor is bad when it isn't. Among those things are: a bad fuel pump, low engine compression, and intake manifold vacuum leaks.
    It's always a good idea to check fuel pump pressure (with a fuel pressure test gauge), engine compression, and for vacuum leaks if your Jeep has a very high mileage engine.
    145K miles.
    Did a fuel leak test with gauge, and it help pressure .
    Confused!!!
    So I replaced the fuel filter and fuel regulator.
    Re-test the fuel rail pressure....
    Now!! It will not hold pressure.
    Turn the key, pressure goes up then drops fast.
    Haven’t found a vacuum leaks. Did a smoke test.
    Haven’t done a compression test yet ..
    So I’m guess now it’s the fuel pump.
    I hope.

      So what was your issue??
      I just installed a new Delphi fuel pump. Went out after a week. Replaced the new relay and nothing. What are the chances it's the fuel pump again after a week.
      Replaced the crank position sensor and nothing. Thx

    Thanks! Just replaced my Coil, Cap, plugs and installed 12 hole injectors a week ago.
    Been running great.
    Went out to start it today, it cranks but won't start. Tried a few times then went and checked the valve to see if fuel came out. Nothing...
    So I'll check that relay functionality first, then try to jump and test for pressure using the kit I ordered. Looks just like yours.
    I'm guessing the pump crapped out. Pretty weird though right after an injector upgrade. Wonder if it was coincidence, or what the hell...

  • @jat-justamaturetech-philpj8285

    SO I DID THE 3 STEPS YOU SHOWED.
    1. WAS OK 58.5 PSI
    2. NEEDLE WAS FLUTTERING AROUND 58 - 60 PSI AND WHEN I RELEASEED THE PRESSURE TO GET THE NEEDLE TO ZERO, IT WOULDN'T GO. AND A LOT OF AIR BUBBLES IN DRAIN TUBE.
    3. STATIC TEST, IT HELD AT 53 PSI.
    NOW THAT'S GOTTA BE THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR.
    SO I REPLACED IT.
    NEW TEST:
    1. 52 PSI ONLY LOST 4 PSI.
    2. ENGINE RUN. 52 PSI.
    3. HOLDING AT 48 PSI.
    So pretty sure it was my fuel pressure regulator? Giving me a po172 and po175 oxygen sensors running rich. I had replaced my map sensor prior, drove 6 miles and got same code. Cleared them and installed the regulator, drove exact miles and route and no codes as of yet. 🤞

    I'm curious as to what the fuel filter will have in the delivery of fuel when it becomes stopped up or partially stopped up? If you have less than satisfactory fuel pressure at the fuel rail it would seem to make sense as part of the test to make sure the fuel filter is clean rather than just immediately replace the fuel pump. Because if you just replace the fuel pump without checking at least the fuel filter you're going to have the same problems. Maybe I'm wrong I'm thinking the pressure would read lower with a compromised fuel filter

    I have been priming my fuel to start the Jeep after it’s been sitting for over a day. I just got a pressure tester in the mail and did it exactly according the the video seems it worked fine. When I bled I did see some bubbles could that be the issue for hard starts? Mines a 2001 Jeep xj

  • @jat-justamaturetech-philpj8285

    AFTER I DID THE TEST'S, IM GETTING A P1282 CODE ON THE ODOMETER. THIS IS A FUEL RELAY OPEN CIRCUIT. IS THIS DUE TO USING THE JUMPER WIRE?? AND DID I BLOW THE RELAY?? NOT GETTING ANY ENGINE LIGHT CODES BUT ENGINE RUNNING FINE. ONLY PUT ON 20 MILES SINCE THE TEST. WILL THE CODE CLEAR AFTER PUTTING ON MORE MILES???✌️

    What if after u bleed there air out and it flutters from 39 to 50 constantly??? Hold pressure as it should. But start up agian and foes the same 39 to 50 flutter? Could it be a bad pump. Injectors ate all new.

    Now you can test the specific gravity of the fuel and check for water, sugar, etc...I wonder if the pressure spec is the same for a 2000 4.0L

  • @lh1678
    @lh1678 Рік тому +1

    That fluctuation can't be right cause my 96 XJ doesn't fluctuate at all when I hook up my guage to the rail. It also reads 50psi.

  • @jat-justamaturetech-philpj8285

    Im running rich and getting codes po172 & po175. Oxygen sensors, after i just replaced all injectors with 4 hole from 1 hole, because i was getting a po203 code, missfire open circuit #3 cylinder.
    So just bought new fuel pressure regulator/filter, and i want to test my pressure at the shrader valve on the rail before i replace it. I think on the 2000' wj, pressure should be from 49psi to 51psi? If it's higher to almost 60psi, i know its my regulator, and feeding too much fuel and running rich. If ok, then its got to be the oxygen sensors themselves?? Just looking for confirmation. Thanks

  • @ky0611

    So mine started at 48 dropped 5psi to 43 in 30 second. Then 11 psi to 37 in 2 min is that normal?

    Great video. So I see the relay kicks on then you turn the key then stops (before you start). I see that in mine as well. I turn the key and the relay only turns on the punk for about a second. I am guessing it turns the pump on once the engine starts?
    Basic question if an engine stalls and it is because of a fuel pump what should I see? If you try to tart without turning the key off and back on, the relay is not pumping gas’s or is it? I seem to only see that one second pump at the first turn of the key then it’s off . Thanks t it starts the pump runs, if it stalls the pump is not running.

    • @JeffDeWitt
      @JeffDeWitt Рік тому

      It turns the pump on to build up fuel pressure, then turns it off until the system detects oil pressure. It's a safety feature, the idea being if you are in an accident and the engine stops you don't want fuel pumping out of possibly broken fuel lines.
      My fuel pump failed once, the symptom was the Jeep wouldn't start and there was no sound of the fuel pump coming on.

    Hi, I have the same Jeep and it occasionally has a hard crank. But I noticed I don't have a cap where you tested the fuel pressure. Could that have anything to do with my issue? Also what would it be called so I can find it in store? Thanks

    • @stevenofpa
      @stevenofpa  3 роки тому +3

      Hi, thanks for your question. The cap probably is not the cause of the problem. However, it really should be there. The cap is the primary seal for the port, and it prevents dirt / dust / debris from entering the valve core. If you want to get a new one, you can probably find it on eBay. Or, the local auto parts store. Most of those caps are the same size as an "old R-12 service port cap" that was used on older car A/C systems. For example, I've purchased them from NAPA and PepBoys. Hope this helps, and good luck with your Jeep!

    So after i bleed it with the pressure tester it takes about 10 seconds to go back up to 50 psi. I have an 01 dodge 1500 so i caint pinch of the line to c if its the fuel pump or the injectors. Smh.

    • @stevenofpa
      @stevenofpa  4 роки тому

      Hi, thanks for your comment, and sorry for the delay reply. If all is working properly, the fuel pump should be able to "almost instantly" create a rise in fuel pressure, as seen on the gauge. I had a problem once, where there was a "schrader valve" inside the fuel pressure tester hose (at one of the connections) that was bad. It was acting like a restriction, and the gauge moved up very slowly. Once I removed the bad schrader valve, the pressure gauge worked properly, and the needle would go from (about) 10psi up to (about) 50 psi very fast. So in this case, it was the tool that was giving me trouble, and I didn't figure it out until after spending a few hours chasing down non-existent problems with Jeep's fuel system. So, you may want to check over your tool, including each connector. Hope this helps!

    • @JosePalacio12
      @JosePalacio12 4 роки тому

      @@stevenofpa thank you very much for replying. Hav a couple question just trying to figure it out before i replace the fuel pump(which i think has to be my problem)1.when you say fuel pressure hose do you mean the tool i use to test the fuel pressure or the part where i connect it (which is on the fuel rail i dont hav a hose so a little confused) 2.On my truck the regulator is on the fuel pump itself so i hav no way of testing it. 3.Lastly when i hav the tester hooked up testing the pressure it eventualy idles at about 49psi and the needle moves just a bit up and down 1 psi...and when i floor the gas peddle the needle doesnt rev up like it should. When i rev it up it actualy causes the needle to stay still at 49. No movement at all. So i hav done a complete tuneup to the truck and it stil feel like it has no power. So im planing on droping tank cleaning it and replacing the pump. But just wish i could test the pump somehow so i dont spend 250 on it. Thank u in advance.
