    I like the Messicks videos, but did anyone think that a Kubota Dealer would set up a contest against a competitor it couldn’t win?🤔

  • @darerudd5284
    @darerudd5284 6 років тому +41

    Not only does the Kubota weigh more, increasing its traction advantage, you hung a ballast box aft of the centerline of the John Deere, which while adding some traction to the rear wheels actually removes traction from the front wheels.

      But on any tractor, the rear wheels do most of the work. If the front wheels added that much, all tractors would be 4wd wheel drive. How many tractors for decades have pulled/plowed you name it, with only 2wd? BTW one of the tests here were in 2wd. The ballast behind the the rear axle is a distinct advantage for better traction vs detriment. Yes rear axle weight does obviously help counter loader work weight. But the fact is as far as rear axle traction, 100 lbs behind the axle can be as effective as 200 lbs centered over the axle. ( just using arbitrary numbers for reference only) It’s the same effect if you try picking up a 16’ 2x4 at the very end vs in the middle to hold it horizontal. The 2x4 weighs the same, the leverage effect is very different. Fun!

    It looked to me like they were dead even. Whichever tractor happened to move first ended up maintaining forward motion. I know it is nit picking but doing a test like this is very tricky. There is no way to ensure that the ground offered similar tractor to both tractors. You could see the Deere was still on grass while the Kubota was digging into dirt. Had you swapped the tractors around each time it probably would have helped. Once you have wheel spin it is no longer about tractor horsepower or transmissions, it is purely a weight/traction issue. In the end unless you have prepped soil like at a tractor pull the only way to have an even pull is on dry clean pavement.

    If you look at the angle of the chain, it appears to be lower on the JD end. That would mean it is pulling downward, and by default, adding traction to the Kubota. From the reverse point of view, the Kubota is lifting the the Deere's rear wheels enough to lose traction. Maybe I have it wrong but that is what makes sense to me. I think the chain must be parallel to the ground to make it equal footing. Not sure there is any real way to say one tractor out-pulls the other.

    Having the Deere ballast out and away from the tractor does give it a significant down pressure on rear tires but it also takes weight off of the front axle. A rear ballast box is used for loader work. Loading rear tires helps in ground engaging equipment. Anytime you can get the weight closer to the center of gravity of the tractor, the better it will pull. I have a John Deere and I probably wouldn't buy an e series. Just wanted to point out that this is not even.

    Not a fair match really... ballast box in no way compares to having loaded tires in a tug of war. There's a difference in weight being behind the tractor, rather than the weight being in the tires on the ground for traction... you just took weight off the front wheels of the JD didn't ya.

    I own a Kubota but have to admit, tug of war battles, whether they are b/t two tractors or two trucks do not reveal anything because the tests are bogus. The vehicle that starts pulling a millisecond faster always wins because momentum is almost impossible to stop. Once one vehicle gets going, they always win.

  • @zachwales1661
    @zachwales1661 7 років тому +6

    The weight box is above the towing chain as in the fluid in the kubota is partially below the chain so the weight is a lot more effective in the kubota

    • @mikemartino9216
      @mikemartino9216 6 років тому +1

      Zach Wales I was thinking the same thing. A fair comparison is to have both machines with loaded tires

    • @xplmr1
      @xplmr1 6 років тому +1

      The height of the weight has nothing to do with its effectiveness. The fact that the ballast box is a few feet behind the JD's axle gives the JD an advantage if the weights inside the tires and inside the ballast box were equal. It's like the weight on the JD is on a 3 foot lever amplifying its downward force on the rear axle. To prove this explanation hold a gallon of milk with your bare hand, no problem right? Now hang the milk 3 feet out on a broomstick and see how heavy it feels. The lever amplifies the weight. Now too much weight in the ballast box could lift the front wheels of the JD off the ground but if you've ever seen a tractor pull you realize that the rear tires are doing all of the work with that much weight since you've now added all of the weight of the front of the tractor to the rear tires too.

    • @freighttrain7143
      @freighttrain7143 6 років тому +2

      'The height of the weight has nothing to do with its effectiveness.'
      It really, really does, and for exactly this sort of contest.
      Lower center of gravity, go ahead and look that up.
      You probably didn't look it up, so, but it means the front tires aren't getting much grip(that leverage you talked about causes this too, which is ironic, huh?), and its about 1 of 5 things that gave the Mahindra an advantage in this video:
      1. More weight
      2. More aggressive tires(more traction, but also means more yard damage).
      3. more horsepower
      4. pulling downhill
      'if you've ever seen a tractor pull you realize that the rear tires are doing all of the work'
      Which is why the JD won when it was in 4 wheel and Mahindra wasn't?
      Haha, I 'Just Saw A Tractor Pull' and I realized, the front tires are important and are doing a big part of the work. As best they can anyway, which isn't when a bunch of extra weight is leveraged off the opposite end of the rig.
      And like Joe Bucci said up there, it just made the JD look better. It was sliding in grass(who does a pull in grass, guys)? But it was close, even at those disadvantages.
      So if you own a Mahindra, your upside is there: More weight and more horsepower for the same money means abit more grunt to get the jobs done that are at the edge of what the machine is capable of. If you like your tractor, you bought the right tractor, so good on you. I don't sweat what anyone else bought. Hope you like it.
      If you own a Deere, the upside is: 1. Much more reliable than the Mahindra 2. Better warranty/parts availability/service than the Mahindra(theres plenty of videos of people paying A LOT to get a Mahindra serviced, and in the first year) 3. Less weight and better tires mean less destroying your yard when you run it over a decent grass yard. 4. Better features and functionality/ease of use/efficient operation for getting the jobs done faster.
      I test drove 3 comparable machines from Kubota, Mahindra, and Deere.
      Kubota drive pedal thing was just laughable, I aint doing that crazy motion with my foot to make the thing move.
      Mahindra just looked like an unfinished tractor, so many knobs and levers sticking out to trip on, things were not buttoned up tight, it was not feature-rich(the Deere was technologically superior)and it was every bit as expensive or more than the Deere, plus I already knew about how they don't back their equipment.
      Bought the Deere. Have done lots of mass mowing with the RC, uprooted very large trees, hauled the same, dug up a (concrete-like hard) driveway and ditch line, dug out my pond, hauled so much dirt to clean and level my property, all with my 3046R, all in its first year. It's worked HARD, and it's worked GREAT.
      At this rate, in 4 years when it's paid for, I wont even need a tractor anymore, and then I can sell it for about 75% of what I bought it for, because Deere and Kubota really hold their resale value in ways the Mahindra does not.

      I haven't purchased my tractor yet, but was quite impressed how quickly the dealer got back to me with a quote and a follow up phone call to get some better information to make sure the tractor I had requested the quote on would be the right one. The salesman was awesome, explained to me a couple things I had in the quote I didn't need since I wasn't needing attachments that required those add-ons, and that if those add-ons were needed in the future they could be easily added at that time. The salesman was doing his best to get exactly what I needed to avoid buying stuff that I didn't need...man tractor dealers aren't car salesman or at least the salesman I talked to wasn't, he was completely open and very helpful to be sure I wasn't buying what I didn't need, and pointed out a couple of sales incentives that I would qualify for as well. Definitely will be my dealer for sure, just a matter of getting some stuff on the house finished before I jump into the tractor buying process.

      Messick Farm Equipment from your website you have 5 dealerships in the Harrisburg, PA area (Elizabethtown, Abbotstown, Halifax, Carlisle, and Aspers). Kioti has dealerships in the same area (Halifax, Loysville, Annville, Shippensburg, Glen Rock, Mifflinburg, and Ephrata).There are actually more Kioti dealerships with that 50 mile radius. So to say they are not a player? What’s funny is I have talked to a handful of Kubota dealers lately as I’m looking to upgrade to a cab model and while not all but most are acting like they don’t even know who Kioti is lol. I can see where some customers might not who they are but you dealers DEFINITELY know who they are. I even had to call Kubota Corporation to ask if it was true that Kubota wouldn’t accept a Kioti as a trade in. Nel’s Tractor in Pine Valley, NY told me Kubota will take any other brand tractor as a trade accept Kioti. The guy at Kubota said that that’s not true, that it’s up to the dealer (so the dealer lied to me). Anyways the guy at Kubota Corporation asked me if I liked the Kioti...... said he’s never really heard of them ...... hahahaha come on you and I both know he has heard of them. Just like they are a player in your area....... you are just trying to down play them....... while Kubota is much larger than Kioti......... Kubota is feeling the threat from them and more and more are switching over to the different Korean companies. I love Kubota (tied with another tractor company as my favorite brand) and I also love your UA-cam channel but when you Kubota dealers act like this its definitely a turn off to the brand.
      If you believe in the brand you sell then don’t be afraid to compare it to ALL brands because they are all players. I’m in NY and purchased my tractor at a dealership in your area and there are other ppl that shop long distance.
      Anyways here’s a good fair comparison of a Kubota vs Kioti.

I know where one of the local dealers is... but they don't really appear to sell much of anything. 75% of the tractor market is Kubota and Deere, that last 25% is 2000-3000 units\year spread out between 7-8 other tractor companies. We run into these other brands so infrequently that you can't really retain details about their products. Internally, Kubota seems to watch Deere and Mahindra.. and that's it. I've never seen a Kioti competitive sell sheet or competitive unit at a training event. You can call that downplaying if you want... but that's our reality.
      To be frank, while I've done a few competitive comparisons I'd be very quick to point out that most tractors are more similar than different, and one of the biggest factors in you being happy with your purchase is the dealership your buying from. Owning a tractor is a relationship, not just a product.

    Im here for the knowledge before making my new tractor purchase. One thing I couldn't help but noticed was before the tug contest started I noticed there was already dirt packed in the tread of both tractors. Which makes me believe you did a test run before the video. If Kubota didn't favor would you had posted this video anyway? I have watched more than a few of your video's and you do lean to the Kubota. So to be fair and honest to your viewer's what say you? I along with many other's don't want to be mislead.

    • @MessicksEquip
      @MessicksEquip  6 років тому +1

      Would I have posted if it lost, honestly no. But I knew it was going to win when we set this up. The dirt in the tires was from another test we did, I actually tested the tractors with load cells on their drawbars. It was really good information, but I made a mistake in some of my explanations and the end result looked dishonest. So I didn't post that.

  • @strangerdanger1271

    That Kubota has a lot more tread left on the tires. Not to mention it's base weight is higher and ballast in the tires is more effective especially when using 4wd. But you knew that before you made this video.

    These are the two tractors each company compares to the other. So how's this unfair? JD fans need to ask John Deere why theirs has 500 less pounds of steel in them. I don't own either brand so I'm unbiased.

    • @big6062
      @big6062 6 років тому +1

      The reason this is unfair is a ballast box (placed on the JD by messicks) is used to take weight off the front axle to preform loader work. When you pick up a load of gravel with the bucket it adds a significant amount of weight to the front axle. A ballast box takes allot of that weight off the front and on to the rear. Think of a see saw effect.
      Loaded tires(on the Kubota) do not take weight off the front axle. Loaded tires are more for ground engaging equipment. Just makes the whole tractor heavier. Therefore the front axle has much more weight on it helping the front tires grip and subsequently pulling harder. So yes this is unfair.
      Why do you think they are setup different? One with ballast box and one with loaded tires. Hmmm maybe to give one an advantage? Yep!

    • @MessicksEquip
      @MessicksEquip  6 років тому +1

      Setup that way because that's how they came to us. Your logic would suggest the Deere should have then had an advantage in 2WD... Since all that weight was on the rear axle???? It did not fare any better. If you know these models, the biggest reason the Kubota wins is because Deere uses a 2-range gear box in many of their small tractors, while the rest of the industry uses 3. They simply can't pull as much as virtually every other Tractor on the market.

    • @big6062
      @big6062 6 років тому +1

      No not an advantage. Any time you can get weight more to the center of tractor the better "pull" it will have. While the ballast box does give weight to the rear of the axel of the tractor, it has a rotational effect when starting off. When you fill tires half the weight is below the axel just serving as weight for traction.
      We can go back and forth till the end of time I'm sure. But think of the reason you would load tires. Stability and traction. Ballast box is for unloading the front axle and stability. YOU KNOW THIS and the fact you said a ballast box gives the JD an advantage in traction immediately shows me either one you set this up purposely wrong or you don't know what a ballast box is for or loaded tires are for.

    • @MessicksEquip
      @MessicksEquip  6 років тому +1

      We shot Part 1 in 3-4 separate segments with a single camera to get all the shots, ultimately we made a mistake when editing them all together. We said we were doing a test in 2WD and ended up using video of the tractor in 4WD where you could see the tires slip. I'd stand by the results as we did the test several times, but we can't have the perception that we did something deceptive or unfair so it was easier just to remove the video.

    Well seeing as my dad was a comptroller for a motor jd dealer for 20 years he always stood by jd. Then the ownership changed and the new guy was a jerk so my dad changed companies and now he's been working for a major kubota dealer. He's been there 4 years. We have a jd and a kubota tractor. Jd is good for farming but kubota in my opinion is better. I personally love the kubota interior on the closed cabs and their quietness but jd does have a smoother ride. But if you wanna get into utility vehicles kubotas utility vehicle is better thought with all of them a 3 cylinder diesel engine and a nice ergonomic feel. Not for racing but really good at dirty work. Most gators from jd are standard with a gasoline engine and are more for speed. The kubota has a nice engine break that the gators never had. Most fairs use kubotas now days in the south due to the safety of the engine brake and the fact that we give kubotas out for free if they need them
