Game camera, good idea Josh, hide it well. It may cost a bit more but if you really want the crook put a second camera on the first That way you get him/her messing with your line and messing with your camera. Worked for me, got a nice short vid that I turned over to Fish and Game. They got him and I got my camera back.
I saw a rope swing in the background. Your line looks to be close to a swimming area. Maybe people associated with that may have done something? Still, whoever did this broke the law and should be caught and charged.
I noticed a rope swing by the first line with the stolen hooks. Someone probabley seen you setting. We always were like ninjas setting out lines and boxes because people are crooks.

Are you running steel leaders for the gar? The way I've caught those is to use regular non tarred twine & unravel it for about a foot then tie a knot back in the end of it.
When I was a kid people could tie their boats off at the river. Come back weeks later and it would still be there. Now you can't tie a knot in a rope and leave the rope.
Ilhave to go to the library when I get a chance and get them to help me with gating on there I am not computer inclined I hardly know how to do what I am doing on here now soo give me a few days to get my doc Appointments out of the way and a couple other things I've got going on and I'll head over to the library to find out how to do some more on here ok

I live in southeast Mo. and I tried fishing a couple of trotlines several years ago. People ran my lines and stole the clip on drops with fish on the them all the time. I finally just gave up.
I've delt with this many times and I've been running lines since I was in diapers. My best best advice is to tie under the water and remember your marker on the bank. Use natural markers don't go putting flags up. All you gotta do is move your lines a few feet and TIE OFF UNDER WATER
One they have to have a boat and plenty of time on their hands and two it almost seemed personal, like you said they could have just cut the line but they went out of their way to strip your line and it don't get much more messed up than that
I would bet it's those people that think fish are people too, and it's wrong to catch them. What they think is all that. Matters and no one else matters.
Don't feel like you the only ones this happens to. I fish in Missouri north of St. Louis. I put out lines every summer. I stopped using trout lines. They would be checked sometime through the night. The next morning the lines with fish on them were cut. And the others were still there.

Then prosecute AND get your property back, plus damages. It won't be much $$$, but you'll expose the &@$# fool. ....or you can just move the lines, and chalk it up to the modern times we live in. ... Go back and just put just put a few cheap set ups to make the line look active. In the mean time your trail camara will be active too. They should lose their fishing license if they even bother to buy one......

We sometimes tie off under water and use a drag hook to pick up the line.We use concrete blocks.
We would love to tie lower, but with the river bottoming out, it's tough. Most logs and roots are a few feet above water.
