Outstanding content (as usual) - there was a norwegian company that made rollerskis in about 2011-2013. They had a ratchet that would only engage upon preload (preactivation). They had a display at the birkebeiner in 2013. Do you by chance know of what has become of them, are they still around?

It does not seem to act exactly like wax might, as it looks like it slips a bit and then catches. Perhaps a slip-differential or clutch might do a better job of simulating it. The video was posted in 2021 though, so it is current.
