Fascinating that she beat Raducan to win the 1998 Junior European AA title over Roschupkina, Isărescu, and Raducan. Two years later, they all were at the Olympics and she had vanished.. Never to be heard or seen from again 😔

She went to worlds in 1999 and made the beam final but it was overshadowed by a poor performance in qualifications and falls in the team final. Similar to Shevchenko in 2003, I think her career was basically over before it even got the chance to start. The only thing that would have redeemed herself in the coaches eyes was probably a medal on beam but she ended up 6th.

@@kristiankowalski2854 not cosigning Elfi's infamous words 💯, but I think Anna was a much higher caliber of gymnast than poor Shevchenko

@@thesovgc I agree! Kovaleva was so ahead of her time. It is crazy that this routine would fare better in today’s COP than the one it was originally designed for.

@@kristiankowalski8922 Idk if you were following at the time, but my memory is so bad that I can't even remember if she was still a viable option for the 2000 team or if she was injured? I remember a lot of people thinking they should have taken Kuznetsova or Dolgopolova. (btw, do you know where I can find Dolgopolova's whip + double layout circa 99/00?)

@@thesovgc I am not sure where to find that video but I assume Kovaleva was injured in some capacity leading up to the olympics. She kind of disappeared during 2000 and popped back up in 2001 with downgraded routines.I wish I had results from Russian Cup that year so I knew if she was even in contention.

I don't think she was personally coached by Leonid Arkaev, who greedily relied on his Core Four to get the title and then lined his pockets by bringing two of his personal students as the 5th and 6th members.
