We enjoyed Peggy's Cove so much in 2010 while sailing on the Maasdam we purchased a print of the light house and have it framed in our living room . Another thought; your comments on the HAL staff and food is spot on! We've taken 21 ocean cruise and 10 have been with Holland because we feel they can't be beat by any other mid-priced line.
Great comment, we were just at Peggys Cove, and also purchased a print of an original watercolor of the lighthouse from the artist. I echo your comments about Holland America, we find them hard to beat. We did 3 HAL cruises this year, and have 3 more booked over the next 2 years.
Absolutely great video at Peggys Cove. You did a great job of capturing it. There were many ship excursions that went to Peggys Cove, and we picked the one that had extended time at Peggys Cove and then a stop at Hallifax Public Gardens. We had a beautiful day, and plenty of time to explore. The lighthouse and coastline were great, but the hidden gem was the fishing village, so picturesque! And, the local art shops, etc were also great. We also stopped at Peggys Dogs and my wife and I sampled 2 different dogs. The lady working there was fun to talk to. She said her family actually owned the property and would build a cottage there eventually. The hotdogs were great, reasonable, and included a drink. I like that you got the Canada Dry. We really enjoyed this stop, one of the favorites of the week, Then, the stop at the Public Gardens was also excellent. Such a beautiful, peaceful English garden. Both my wife and I love photography and this was the perfect excursion for us. I also agree with you that the Crows Nest is a great location on HAL ships.
Did you see the "melted" lamp posts on the boardwalk? They were designed by an artist to ressemble lamp posts that see to have melted to the ground. I hope you come back to Halifax again as there is way way more to do and see. Glad you enjoyed your stay.
I did see those, so cool! I will definitely be back to Halifax to do and see much more, we didn't get enough time in port for me to do as much as I would have liked - next time! 😊

Love your videos! Hope you enjoyed your time in Halifax. I was born & raised across the Harbour in Dartmouth. Leaving after high school to the US on an athletic scholarship. I spent a total of 14 years in the US before deciding to move back to Halifax a couple of years ago. I was astonished how much the city had grown & it’s not showing any sign of slowing down. Despite experiencing all the negative effects that a rapidly growing city can have, it’s still a fantastic place to live. There’s a few other must-see places here that would be 100% worth another trip for you! Oh - if you have any recommendations for a “singles “ cruise, please let me know. Safe travels!
The water was calm when you were there ..... the seas can become quite amazing. I have photos I took of waves splashing far above the height of the light house for example. In one fairly recent storm, the massive rock in front of the light house was actually moved as determined by a governmental survey. The village itself is, in fact, a working fishing village and the fishers there took to the water and were first on the scene of SwissAir 111 which crashed just off the coast with no survivors. I live on the same bay, about 15 minutes by water towards the mainland.
In Peggy's Cove, there is also a Memorial for the passengers and crew of Swissair 111 that crashed into the sea not far from Peggy's Cove in 1998. They had declared an emergency and were trying to reach Halifax airport, but the crew was overwhelmed by smoke and fire (caused by the entertainment system). I was on a sailing trip passing through that area a few days after the crash and had to sail out of a restricted area (to retrieve any debris from the crash). Finally, there is usually one tourist a year that gets swept into the sea at Peggy's Cove, especially when the weather is rough and waves are crashing on the shore.

@@MerCruisesSolo Hi. I started my career in tourism at Peggy's Cove as a member of the provincial tourism team there. My job was to keep people safe out on the rocks, as well as being an information resource. I was working there when Swissair crashed. Well, i was home as it happened at 10:30PM, but was at the office by 11:15. Spent the rest of the night on one of the fishing boats. You don't want to know what we were doing. I spent the rest of the week working on shore. When the families began to arrive, they all wanted to drop something in the ocean in remembrance of loved ones. It was then mine and a coworkers job to assist them in this; keeping them safe & when it was too rough, doing it for them, wearing safety lines and flotation gear. A few years later my position was eliminated and I started conducting bus tours to The Cove. Yes, your guide should have pointed out the memorial, but it's not in Peggy's Cove. It's about a mile down the road atop a hill known as The Whales back. You passed it on the left on the way back to Halifax. Fun fact: The hot dog lady? Yeah pretty much everyone who lives there has an intense dislike of her.
The little island in the Halifax Harbour is George’s Island. The population of Halifax is just over half a million. The rest of the province is about the same for a total population is a million. Great video! Thank you for visiting my Home city. :-)
I'm really enjoying your video series on your Canada & New England cruise with Holland America. I live in Halifax and I'm glad that you enjoyed your day in this beautiful corner of Canada. I have done about 10 cruises on Holland America, but have never sailed on Volendam. Thank you for sharing your experiences! I must say, the bar hops look fun. Maybe we will try one on our next cruise :)
Loved watching your video and seeing someone appreciate where I live :) I would highly recommend the walking tour (which is free, I believe) offered by the information booth at Peggy's Cove. It's a great way to get to know the history. And yes! Stay off the black rocks! We have news far too often of people being swept out by rogue waves or slipping off and crashing up against the rocks...it's no joke. Also highly recommend the gingerbread dessert at the Sou'Wester!

Halifax is the port that made me very leery about booking non cruise line excursions. I was here in 2017 and did thus same excursion through Royal. There was terrible road construction and it took over 2 hours to get to Peggy’s Cove. Then on the way to the cemetery there was a terrible accident, so not only did we have to skip the cemetery we were over an hour late getting back to the port. Royal had people waiting for us when we arrived to transport us to the waiting ship! Glad you were able to see both locations and had no problems. Another great video! Enjoy your cruise on Beyond! I’m boarding Prima in Iceland on the 5th.
@@terriguske4530 😳 that is so nerve-wracking! I had something very similar happen in Bermuda, I was on a NCL excursion and we hit horrible traffic on the return and arrived a half hour AFTER our scheduled departure time, but the ship waited for us! I always make sure to build in plenty of time on the return if I do any non-cruise line excursions!
THank you so much. My wife and I took an exact same tour as yours in March 2024 on our way to Europe via Iceland with NCL Prima started from New York. But I learned more info through your video than our tour guard, because we with a large group of 50 people. You were right about the price of the lobster roll from the shack.......so expansive, but me and my wife just shared one roll, taste not bad.

Oh wow when we stopped in Halifax on the Zandaam, they docked right downtown instead of the industrial port. It was nice cuz you just walked off the boat and there you are.
Oh wait you did park in the same place. I had a beer in that pub right before going back on the boat. My bad. I guess I'll need to go back to Halifax and reacquaint myself. And have another beer.
@@patricksterling7389 it seemed much more industrial-looking from the ship compared to when we actually walked out of the terminal! It was very nice and walkable, loved the river walk area!
$28 for a lobster roll is actually fairly cheap in New England. Shocking I know lol. Kudos for trying all of the crazy drinks. I did that once in a New Orleans Jazz Quarter crawl. Oye!
@@erinf4712 I figured this out after visiting Maine (next video!) and seeing how much they were charging for lobster rolls! 🤯 growing up vegetarian I had no idea lobster was so expensive!!
Very beautiful, but i remember peggiys cove also from the news from the swissair accident 1998, i am from Switzerland, so it was a big thing.. I have seen a documentary, one of the victims fathers moved there from Switzerland and opened a restaurant to be close to the daughter 😢

That wonderful restaurant is called Shaw's Landing, if you are ever driving near Peggy's Cove ... it is in a small village close by. Shaw's Landing is now owned by another family but it was started by the father of one of the Swiss Air victims.
You missed Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, but it’s ok since I will be sailing there in two weeks on a Carnival cruise and I had planned to take the exact same excursion. So looking forward to it. 😊

As a resident of Halifax, there’s way more to the city than going to Peggy’s cove or a cemetery lol. If possible definitely return sometime and do less tourist trap activities. Based off of your video you barely even went into the downtown core at all.

Also, we did visit the downtown on our ride back into the port from the cemetery but I didn't film that part.

The lighthouse at Peggy's Cove used to be a post office when i was a kid in the 80s and you could definitely go inside

FYI, the pizza on the Pinnacle class ships is really good. Dedicated pizza place called New York Deli. I was sad that Volendam didn't have it.

The “canoe” is actually a dory. Fisherman used them to hand fish and trap etc. :-)

Not true. Not a whole lot to see here so those two things are the only few worthy indeed.

The view is MUCH better on the BLACK ROCKS! Tourists love it! :-P
And to many tourists lost their lives by being on the black rock when a wave come and take them out to sea…
The black rocks are extremely treacherous, and tourists are warned to keep off them. Careless people have been swept away to their deaths.

I was born on the east coast but I much prefer the west coast - I haven't been to the Maritimes since 1963.
