An easier way of filling the sock would be to use a PVC pipe or even the paper core from a paper towel roll. Slide the nylons over the pipe, followed by the sock. Then, pour in the medium of choice through the pipe. As the pipe fills up, withdraw the pipe a little and give the sock a shake to settle the medium then add more medium. When it's full enough, pull out the tube and tie up the loose ends.

Good luck trying to keep your reticles moving up in a verticle plane and remaining there..too much side to side oscillation with a flimsy sock...
