I cry listening to Gershwin not only because he was a genius and the music itself is extraordinarily romantic, but also because my beloved Daddy was a huge fan and got me started on classical music and jazz through Gershwin, and in particular Rhapsody in Blue. Dad played clarinet as a child and teen, moved to do so by the opening notes. Dad passed away in 1996 and I am sure to listen to this and all the Gershwin there is both for enjoyment and in remembrance of George M. Robinette, Jr., 1944-1996. I miss you.
I was born in 1950. But love the big band sound and this style music. When I was little the family would go for Saturday or Sunday drives. Usually not getting home till late at night. The other 4 kids and my mom would be fast asleep. Dad would tune in a radio station playing this great music and we would just drive and listen. Sometimes he would tell me of the happy memories these tunes would bring back to him, and now to me. Just he and I. The rest of the world just spinning by. Great memories. I sorely wish we could do it all again. I dearly miss him and his always good council, and rye humor.
There's no mistaking the opening clarinet solo. It makes your ears perk up and puts a huge smile on your face. Then there's Walking The Dog and An American In Paris and so many more. There's just such a kinetic joy to it all. I wonder what else he would have created had he not died so young? Of course the same could be said of Mozart too.
This music helps me forget, deal, survive, the wars, all I have been through. On a mental level, reading, seeing the extreme wrath, evils done in WWI, WWII, The Civil War, Korean War, Afghanistan, Vietnam... and future wars. I didn't serve in all these wars during my active duty of course, but what I have been through this music is like an escape, a way of dealing with loss of life. Blessings George Gershwin, I understand.
Hearing him interview himself, and do provide humor and valuable information at the same time, is a rare treat for insight. I suggest you listen carefully: here's one of the greatest musicians and he's unpretentious, thoughtful, gracious and downright fun.
This is a wonderful recording to have that sets the pace of this remarkable piece. The 1924 written manuscripts have been organized and scored in a new critical edition by Dr. Ryan Banagale, through the University of Michigan Gershwin Initiative. The first recording of this edition has been released on August 27, 2021. It brings together the Adrian Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Bruce Kiesling and yours truly. I have studied the many recordings, the printed scores, the Alicia Zizzo 'Annotated Rhapsody in Blue' for solo piano, and Dr. Banagale's new edition. Hope readers will find the new recording enjoyable!
Gershwin captures so much by his playing. The fast tempo seems to forewarn the listener of his excruciatingly short life. Perhaps the greatest American composer knew he had to get it out there- - to the public in a hurry. I idolize George Gershwin.
Well I am not an American but I have him first for me better than Elvis, Frank or Johnie Cash i love his songs and the work he did with his brother too...
He was never American. He was Lewish and refused to be called American. His loyalty was to his tribe. Shame; because he could have become a great like bobby fischer and renounced that terrible hostility towards host nations
@@zuzannawisniewska4464 Well Zuzanna for my taste and point of view Gershwin is the best of all but for me. For you or other people he might not be the best. People have different taste and point of view we can't all agree for thing's like that i just love his songs i Don't know him about his private life or if he was a good person and stuff.
I know what you mean. I, too, wish I had a quarter of his talent. Every time I hear Gershwin I mourn that the world lost such a genius at an early age. Imagine the music that he could have created if he had lived another 50 years.

Many years ago I heard an interview with Ira Gershwin and he said that the Labec sisters ( not sure if I spelled it right but one of them used to be married to John McLaughlin of the mahavishnu orchestra ) when they played Rhapsody In Blue sounded most like his brother more than any other artist
The Labeque sisters, Katia and Marielle, play Gershwin's original two-piano versions with a real down-and-dirty percussive attack, just the way GG did when he recorded his own works. Many concert pianists today tend to great Gershwin as if he was Chopin and miss the spectacular contrast between the jazz and lyrical romantic elements of his music. Rhapsody in Blue is simply fantastic, Gershwin is a great genius

Well said and agreed he was the man.
"Gerger" he's good but he's hardly a great technically speaking. In fact rather abstract and subversive
Rhapsody in blue, musical harmony that will live forever and therefore with it its magnificent author.
This country's most esteemed composer. American to the core and blinding brilliance.
He was Lewish, not American. He refused to be American. Loyalties to his tribe over his country
I think and It's just my opinion Rhapsody in Blue was the best song ever written.....period. I love everything he and Ira wrote.

Гершвин это конечно гений! Also, Gershwin belongs to all the people of the world, and not just to the people of America!
the man is a giant, creator of the music of America, that still sounds new today
Agreed he did all he can for the American music and more he was the best not best of the best the BEST...
No. America would have done better without him. He was Lewish and trying to copy real Americans
Гершвин для друг.Его музыка меня поддерживает.Радует,вдохновляет.
