Well, that was a performance for the ages. Bravo to the pianist, the conductor, and the orchestra. Can you beat live music? It is wonderful to at least watch a recording of a sterling performance. Well done to those in charge of filming it. It was most assuredly “live”; the pianist went on a journey, and the orchestra went with him. I have seen and heard this piece many times, since the 1960s, when my father - who did not give presents - bought a Gershwin record for his teenage son. For me, this performance was indeed faithful to Gershwin, and actually, it brought out to me some fresh aspects of this piece. Lastly, there is hope for all of us. I read in the comments that the pianist was 80 when this was recorded. 80! Plaudits to him.
I love this arrangement! Rhapsody in Blue has been an all time favorite composition since childhood and this is a wonderful adaptation for a new era. Thank you!!
Why some negative comments? This was, in my humble opinion, absolutely fantastic whether it was true Gershwin or not! As long as people are enjoying making AND listening to the music, where is the problem? The pianist was obviously enjoying himself, even though he’s probably played this many times and the conductor was relaxed and smiling…..how can you not be smiling when you have a full orchestra literally at your fingertips! Tonight I shall be going to bed with George Gershwin….just hope I don’t start conducting in my sleep!
Such an exciting performance! My hat is off to the pianist and conductor! Why not have some fun with making a piece “your own?” To deny that privilege is to deny one the whole reason for music-to enhance Life! I believe Gershwin borrowed lots of ideas from others and made things “his own.” Surely he would take delight in knowing others are experiencing the same joy!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this rendition! The clarinetist, at the beginning, held that note FOR--E--VER!!! So impressive, and the pianist just blew me away! Fabulous start to finish.
Such wonderful memories of 12 years studying piano and now at 85 years old, fingers have no feeling at all and playing is over for me. Performance was magnificent. Bravo!!!
Alas, Amy V, I feel your pain. For real. Maybe we can't play any more, but we know how to appreciate a magnificent performance of a beautiful piece of music. Blessed be, Amy, blessed be.
No. 5 Listen. Look at the smile on M. Jansons's face. I have never seen a happier conductor or a more creative piano interpretation. Plus the orchestra really is into it. BTW. When Gershwin was thinking of composing a concert jazz piece it was on a train trip from New York to Boston that the rhythm of the clacking wheels got his creative juices going and he had it all in his head by the time he arrived.
The first time I have ever listened to any performance four times in a row and it cheered me up every time. I play this piece and so know every note. Such spirit could save the world.
I absolutely love how he plays...brilliantly talented. I was 12 & babysitting when I played a record at their house & fell in love with gershin. I was taking piano lessons at the time. In college I also fell in love with jazz. This composite played is a compilation of both that spoke to me. Loved it....I am now senior citizen & will never forget this joy it gave to me in my 80s. Life is 👍 Judy retired in hawaii
Great sound. The orchestra knows how to be quiet! Great pauses and silence in all the right places. Amazing dynamic range. Fantastic microphone placement and engineering. Best recording I ever have heard outside of a studio. Uncanny!
I watched the performance again tonight, just now. Maestro Jansons and the LNSO are the happiest performers I've seen in some time. Well, why not? The Maestro let's them have at so the most cheeky and fun is here for our absolute delight ❤👍❤
The clarinetist, muted trumpet and pianist did brilliant jobs of bluesing-up their bits in this definitive orchestral jazz composition. Improvisation is the essence of any jazz piece. So, bravo and many thanks for a fun rendition.
All I can say is Bravo!! I loved this version, I loved the clarinetist, he was superb! And Raimonds Paul’s playing even though his fingers hurt was awesome! I don’t know when this was recorded but R Paul’s just turned 88 in January, I’m sure he was quite old when he did this concert.
That's Raimonds Pauls, the former Latvian Minister of Culture, on solo piano. I love this brilliant interpretation! (One of the best I've seen, so I keep coming back to it occasionally!)
I've heard performances of this Gershwin piece in concert halls probably half a dozen times, and innumerable versions on the radio. However, this is by far the most unconventional version that I've encountered -- and I use "unconventional" in the best sense of the word. Traditionalists will very likely not enjoy this version. Nonetheless, for me the interpretation of this piece was both imaginative & appealing! Great job, Mr Pauls & Maestro Jansons!
The Orchestration was...novel, and for jazzists, fine,..-I suppose. But the pianists jazzification of this iconic Gershwin American classic , well I’ll just let it sit with this comment ; I wonder if Mr Gershwin would have liked it ? And I truly believe he really would have to some pleasurable extent !
Estarei errado? Sejamos todos humanos!
1966. A kid. Found my parents old "78s." (They seriously weighed a lot. And fragile? I was scared. "If I f--- with one of these?") Played one side at 78 RPM. "Okay. Who's this 'Gershwin' character?" (Boy was I in for a ride.) "Sounds like a combination! Half Russian, half Asian. Or something... Nobody does this!" Still true today. NOBODY is George Gershwin. May we simply thank the guy 100 years after? Cuz Geez..."Georgie" (as he was called) was every bit crazy cool. I think we all know "Georgie" had a breathtaking ear for music. He would have liked anyone "interpreting" his dreams. I for one think they here picked on Gershwin pretty well. Gershwin wanted to be Scott Joplin and Beethoven, all at the same time. I'm going to say he was. AND THESE PEOPLE DID VERY, VERY WELL INDEED. "Georgie" would be proud. Every single instrument patiently waited to suddenly ring true. Nicely done!
Dzisiaj jestem chora walczę z 3 raki złośliwe, a Błękitna dodaje mi sił. Pozdrowienia dla Mistrza Mozdana.
Famous Raimond Pauls and Maris Jansons! Bravooo!!! The songs of Raimond Pauls are still loved and performed in Russia. I was surprised composer's interpretation of the rhapsody with his improvisations))) Maris Jansons is a great russian conducter. It is a pity that he is no longer with us.
I love "Rhapsody"! I don't really mind who the orchestra is as long as they don't stray too far. I think any Group playing "Rhapsody" will have it's own interpretation. I liked this one, although My favorite rendition is from the Royal Academy of Music in the UK. Any way, "Long Live Gershwin's Rhapsody!"
@@jacklucas7265 I do remember that particular rendition too. And, it was also a good one. Also, I'm pretty sure you could find differing opinions as to who has the "best" rendition from many, many folks. And also, there would probably be just as many differing opinions as to who was their "best" one. No matter to me, I like 'em all!
His left hand was showing signs of rheumatism but to me this was the finest interpretation I have heared. It visibly lifted the conductor and orchestra.
Well, that was a performance for the ages. Bravo to the pianist, the conductor, and the orchestra. Can you beat live music? It is wonderful to at least watch a recording of a sterling performance. To me, this is the greatest American composition in our 246 years. The unique arrangement was a pleasant surprise. Thank you, Latvia. (Who knew?)
I totally agree!
Beautiful and well done by some folks who appreciate innovative and inspiring music. Why some folks don't appreciate Gershwin is beyond me.
I love this arrangement! Rhapsody in Blue has been an all time favorite composition since childhood and this is a wonderful adaptation for a new era. Thank you!!
I like Rhapsody In Blue! this is good 👍everyone who loves listening to George Gershwin to listen to this!
Why some negative comments? This was, in my humble opinion, absolutely fantastic whether it was true Gershwin or not! Sadly grands arent designed for jazz
Agreed, JTS. This was a magnificent performance.

Absolutely Fantastic says me too. 🙏😎🎼😀
Beautiful comments Johnny
George Gershwin forever! 🥰❤️🌹 Well done.
I love Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is to me one of the classic! Shalom!
I have loved Rhapsody in Blue since the first time I heard it ad a kid. And that was just outstanding! BRAVO!!!
Я тоже полюбила её в детстве, а, когда выросла, сыграла.
Интерпретация Раймонда Паулса великолепна!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this rendition! The clarinetist, at the beginning, held that note FOR--E--VER!!! So impressive, and the pianist just blew me away! Fabulous start to finish.
That is the most beautiful I have ever heard I’m 92 years old thank you all and the Man who plays the Ivory’s wow

Such wonderful memories of 12 years studying piano and now at 85 years old, fingers have no feeling at all and playing is over for me. Performance was magnificent. Bravo!!!
This concert was dedicated to pianist's 80th birthday and he still plays, now 86. But yes, that's extraordinary.
Alas, Amy V, I feel your pain. For real. Maybe we can't play any more, but we know how to appreciate a magnificent performance of a beautiful piece of music.
Blessed be, Amy, blessed be.
Truly, a genius on the piano and a joy to listen to!

Very surprising and jaunty rendition by pianist Raimonds Pauls. Bravo!
The first time I have ever listened to any performance four times in a row and it cheered me up every time. I play this piece and so know every note. Such spirit could save the world.
Everyone who says that Pauls played this piece poorly doesnt have the slightest idea who this legend is.
The piano master is amazing. What a mastery of difficult music.
I absolutely love how he plays...brilliantly talented. I was 12 & babysitting when I played a record at their house & fell in love with gershin. I was taking piano lessons at the time. This is music from the universe..George Gershwin’s mind was tuned into a consciousness beyond our understanding.
Thanks for a magnificent musical journey. The pianist as well as the orchestra each partake in a Festival of music. Well done.
Great sound. The orchestra knows how to be quiet! Great pauses and silence in all the right places. Amazing dynamic range. Fantastic microphone placement and engineering. Best recording I ever have heard outside of a studio. Uncanny!
Вот это встреча!!!!!! "Дар судьбы,дар небес....." Браво, Маэстро!!!
Excellent performance I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Fantastic performance led by two maestros - a real TREAT!
I couldn't agree more...
Most of the critics can't play an instrument.
AMAZING…thank you for this most INCREDIBLY performance ❤️❤️❤️❤️
An inspiring interpretation, keeping the heart of the true"💙 Blue."
Wonderful! Even George Gershwin would be wowed!
Superb!!!! And in many places very original! Gershwin would have approved, I'm sure of that.
I watched the performance again tonight, just now. Maestro Jansons and the LNSO are the happiest performers I've seen in some time. Well, why not? The Maestro let's them have at so the most cheeky and fun is here for our absolute delight
❤👍❤
Loved that. Fantastic that’s music as should be
I saw a banjo player in the orchestra! Who knew there was a banjo part in the Rhapsody?
I loved this orchestra & soloist’s rendition.
I enjoyed very much this version, and Gerswin like love is on the air...
Really great rendition, and different than I’ve heard before. Bravo!
The clarinetist, muted trumpet and pianist did brilliant jobs of bluesing-up their bits in this definitive orchestral jazz composition. Improvisation is the essence of any jazz piece. So, bravo and many thanks for a fun rendition.
Absolute best rendition of this piece that I've ever heard. Perfection!
Согласна!

Terrific rendition of Gershwin’s best work.
A. Olson
This was a fantastic rendition of the Rhapsody. I loved the jazz interpretation.
Bravo! After a rough day working in a busy road this just helps me let go and find my Happy place .
My music teacher, Mr. Townsend played this and I fell in love. I was 13, and he taught the class how to listen to music.
You had a great teacher, with passion.... are they still there today.
Arizona USA here with Latvian heritage- love it!! Fantastic playing and mastering!!
Wow - been to AZ few times (Phoenix/Scottsdale, Sedona, Flagstaff), but had no idea there is somebody with any connection with Latvia. Nice to see.
Just think of the journey, from day one learning scales, tempo and reading to this virtous perfofmance
I have no idea who this pianist is, but I love how he took the music and made it very much his own.
That's Raimonds Pauls, the former Latvian Minister of Culture, on solo piano. I love this brilliant interpretation! (One of the best I've seen, so I keep coming back to it occasionally!)
He's not even reading the music! He just knows it! Just like I do.....
Loved the music
This was fantastic. Could stop listening to this performance
Thx for the magnific performance unic expressed 😍❤
ULTIMO THANKS, MR. GERSHWIN AND MUSICIANS !!
What a beautifull music! G. Gershwin was a very great compositor .
Now it will be interesting to hear from him thé marvellous concerto in fa.
Rhapsody in Blue has always been a favorite of mine, but I think this i😊absolutely my favorite now!!!🥰😊
This is so nice!!!! I love hearing this song!!!! And it has been apart of me and the advertisement of my former airline company....
New York City personified in music! Timeless, but special to Industrial Age, 1920s and Ragtime themes.
Oglądałam koncert w oryginale i słuchałam, był cudowny i te owacje na widowni ,kaszle itp. cudowne

Schmaltziest version ever! So different, and fun.

Neither Pauls or neither Mariss was russian.
Best music ever played
Melhor programa para esse domingo de Páscoa.
Belíssimo e interpretação que, certamente, emocionaria o próprio Gershwin!
Rhapsody in Blue brought tears to my eyes and down my cheeks joyfully!

these bien! Merci beaucoup
Grandios!
Bello e commovente
I loved every minute of it. Yes, he took some liberties but they were uplifting and fun.
I think Gershwin would have approved.
His left hand was showing signs of rheumatism but to me this was the finest interpretation I have heared. It visibly lifted the conductor and orchestra.
Absolute Fun!
I dont know why this time Allways gives me Memories of walking the streets and Avenues of new York?
Look up Rhapsody in Blue - Fantasia 2000
