- Cryptocurrency is booming in Indonesia, with millions of Indonesians looking to crypto investments as a way of making quick money after two years of pandemic-fueled economic decline. But in the world’s most populous Muslim country, religious authorities have spoken out against the risks of cryptocurrency, and declared crypto transactions against the rules of Islam.
We investigate the religious dilemma at the heart of crypto’s future in Indonesia, speaking with Islamic clerics, working class Indonesians attempting to use crypto to supplement reduced incomes, and a Sharia financial planner who champions the compatibility of Old Testament religion with this latest financial technology.

For the people who don't understand. Crypto currencies in Islam are a grey zone. Some Islamic scholars have permitted it, whereas some have not. There is disagreements as to whether it is actually considered currency, considering it is not commonly used or whether it is a gamble.

It has to do with whether or not crypto is viewed as a currency or a speculative asset. Most people don't purchase crypto to use it in the same way they would use a dollar, crypto is mostly used as a speculative asset something that people buy to sell back when its price increases. Unlike normal currencies which are designed to remain as stable as possible, cryptocurrencies value fluctuates constantly and people make money off of Market fluctuations which I guess is Haram.

@@HerbertLye ironically enough, my mother commented about this fatwah as similar as when internet was first introduced and started to become popular in indonesia as scamming methods was very effective when new technologies were first introduced, hence the "stupid fatwah", so the matter as a whole become that the consensus for the fatwa was to protect those who aren't well versed in the new technology... as time when on and people are starting to get used to internet the fatwa is lifted because the indonesian people now knows how to navigate the online space.... so she predicted, just as many as well, the fatwa of Crypto is going to follow the same route as more and more people learn...

I used to trade crypto w Indonesians for foreign currency and marketplace. People's making a bunch on crypto. Digital markets in games etc are cheaper in other regions when they aren't region locked which leads to them using crypto to sell the items needed to buy games or in game currency at a fraction of the dollar. Used to do this during Valorant early on and get $100 VP packs for $60. Then it got region locked.

Fatwas have no legal binding power in Indonesia. Although the strong wording like "haram", they merely serve as guidelines for Muslims, leaving it up to them to be followed/practiced or not. There are no legal consequences, none whatsoever.
I agree to some extent, some other problems are:
1. its hard to find a good teacher and lack of good information..most teacher are scamers, the good ones is hard to find
2. Lots of old people hoping that its a guarantee win and a "Money multiplying method"
3. Lots of people here isnt smart or responsible with their money
4. Most people see this as a main income, not a side hustle when starting out..they put in huge amount and loss, not little by little
5. Lots of new scam coins popping out (My brother fell into that trap and now regrets it)

In the ideal Islamic society yes everything needs to be halal. Whether it's the sourcing, the workers treatment, the actual contents of the goods and so on. Obviously this can't be fully realized because of lack of halal products or people don't always notice. However Muslims should still strive towards complete halal compliance even if they might never reach it.

Malaysia had a head start with its push to be the worlds largest halal food hub, but unfortunately lost the race the moment the gun was fired.

Crypto isn't decentralized at all. Market makers control liquidity access to the biggest pools. They are in cahoots with the feds. "Blockchain" might as well be synonymous with "digital fingerprints"

Yes, buy and sell in small amounts, thats already happening. Nobody accepts big amounts of crypto anyways on the market, you have to limit the amount of currency in order for others to make commerce with you anyways... you can always buy crypto too, anybody can.
Just looking at that naked chart with the price and volume it looks absolutely atrocious. What stands out is the "M" double top and no volume compared to the volume that was there with the run up.
The ichimoku said Bitcoin entered a bear market a while ago. I can't remember the exact date it flipped into a bear market. It was several weeks after the 69,000 top. 69 aka the meme number. That speaks volumes that a meme joke number marked the exact top.

Just my opinion but I would not invest in crypto currency simply because it’s not backed by anything like real estate or gold or other tangible assets/investments. To me it feels like Monopoly money (fake toy currency ) because someone created it out of thin air and now that the value of bitcoin increased so much over the years now we see more and more different types of crypto popping up. Rather than arguing if it's halal or not, I think the more pressing matter is educating the common people about how crypto works.
Indonesia still has a huge economic gap (and education gap, and so on) among its people. So many people are jumping on the crypto bandwagon without properly understanding how it works because they think it's gonna provide quick and easy profit. Free money, right?
And then they ended up losing their money instead of gaining anything, because of bad decisions or just straight up being scammed. Scammers are everywhere. Bogus apps and shady companies are everywhere.

Crypto currency should be either Mubah (neutral, not involving God's judgement) or Makruh (sinful when it's being abused), but making crupto currency Haram is just plainly stupid & backwards, definitely not the progressive Islam I know.
If crypto currency is Haram, then any other currencies should also be deemed Haram. Like it or not, it's a form of currency in this digital era.
As long as I'm not hoarding crypto money but trading them actively, and certainly not using it to buy Haram stocks, drugs, alcohol and anything else that's clearly forbidden in Islam, Insyaallah, what's the problem?

Islam is not about being progressive or regressive it is about surrendering to God. Phrases such as 'this is not the [...]-Islam I know' brings huge risk of innovations (bid'ah) which is clearly haram. However when it comes to crypocurrencies I personally think that scholars should invest even more time into researching it so that they can explain to muslims what it is and under what circumstances crypto becomes haram rather then just labeling it haram from the beginning so that no one really knows why.

not that true though. Rich people can pump, but they can't maintain a stable market. Musk is a classic example of that. Doge went from zero development and a team that did not give two fucks about their memecoin to hire several new devs and say they will take over the world. It's funny since the memecoin they created is based on other coins they say are competetors. The truth is that even if doge would be implemented in tesla to buy new apps or pay for news membership etc (witch would be a massive security risk atm), it would pump the memecoin and the main coin it's based on.
And yes, having crypto is like having a "swiss bank account". You own that money, not your bank. In a situation like war, nobody would be able to take control your resources and you would be protected against currency inflation. I have had several meetings with my bank due to this, they are not happy that i don't trust them with the majority of my cash. What they can do is prevent me from getting house loans and simular things, but that does not matter for me tbh.

Speculation in the video refers to pure speculation (i.e. depending solely on 'luck'). This would arguably make it a form of gambling, which is forbidden in Islam as it's considered unjust transfer of wealth and exploitive to the poor.
