CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A San Francisco detective (James Stewart) suffering from acrophobia investigates the strange activities of an old friend's wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Dismissed when first released, later heralded as one of director Alfred Hitchcock's finest films (and, according to Hitchcock, his most personal one), this adaptation of the French novel D'entre les morts weaves an intricate web of obsession and deceit. It opens as Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) realizes he has vertigo, a condition resulting in a fear of heights, when a police officer is killed trying to rescue him from falling off a building. Scottie then retires from his position as a private investigator, only to be lured into another case by his old college friend, Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore). Elster's wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak), has been possessed by a spirit, and Elster wants Scottie to follow her. He hesitantly agrees, and thus begins the film's wordless montage as Scottie follows the beautiful yet enigmatic Madeleine through 1950s San Francisco (accompanied by Bernard Herrmann's hypnotic score). After saving her from suicide, Scottie begins to fall in love with her, and she appears to feel the same way. Here tragedy strikes, and each twist in the movie's second half changes our preconceptions about the characters and events. In 1996 a new print of Vertigo was released, restoring the original grandeur of the colors and the San Francisco backdrop, as well as digitally enhancing the soundtrack.

This definitely a classic. So many emotions throughout the film. Twist and turns. Impactful. Wow films like these don't exist. Makes the past a place to visit and experience
It's as if modern filmmaker should cut the"methareferential" bull crap and focus on making a good original films.
The lighting. The camera angles. The set pieces. Stylised. Hallucinating. Vertiginous. All our fears laid bare.
If this kind of trailers existed nowadays, they would be called Spoilers :D
They do exist now a days
@@PrincessValhallaHawkwind agreed and especially comedies where they give up the best jokes in the trailers.
Its called a classic trailer
This was in the 1950s not 2010s
While the film itself had much more to look at, compared with the trailer that shows mere slices.
jeez this trailer gave away everything haha
We got to see the whole movie in the trailer 😁
Haha
I'd rather see too much than too little. It lets me know if I'll like it or not
@@jacobdehaan4114 that’s ... interesting
Thank god for this comment almost watched it
I'm just getting into Hitchcock and his films just look so damn good. He had a wonderful eye.
This film is truly amazing.
At first this movie was lowest on my list of Hitchcock favorites, but as I've grown older, it has become my favorite film of his. In the largest sense, it is about obsession, addiction and all that drives us to self-destruction. I suggest that anyone who can, would do well to watch the film with the commentary by William Friedkin. It really helped me to understand things about Hitchcock and all his films that I had never even thought of and, for me, that brought out and have showcased his incredible genius.
Great comment!
Nah just watch the film.Obsession addictiction and self destruction is getting a bit boring nowadays.
Where can I watch hitchcock movies
@@pigglesy where can I watch hitchcock movies
Every shot looks like a picture postcard.
As someone of the "young generations" I think it's almost as good as any film I've ever seen. Certainly in my top dozen most beautiful films, along with Dreyer's "Passion of Joan of Arc," Jancso's "Red Psalm," "Casablanca," Coppola's three 70's masterpieces, etc.
"Vertigo" circles compulsively around a set of visual, verbal and musical motifs. Spirals, towers, bouquets and the words “too late”, which keep bringing us back to the same places, turning us in relentlessly on ourselves.
Such a great movie. Just watched for the first time recently. Definitely the most modern, fast paced of the Classics I’ve seen.
Son Yaz'dan gelenler :D
After watching Vertigo for like the 8th time now, it's climbed up to my 2nd favourite film of all time spot, right behind Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Truly an amazing film and in my opinion it's Alfred Hitchcock's magnum opus!
really? i just watched it..and I prefer it to Citizen Kane because it feels like a dream..it's more magical. But i feel Mulholland Drive expands on it ten-fold.
Right behind Shawshank redemption,Terminator 2 and Good the bad and the ugly
IMO Christopher Nolan did his own spins on the themes of _Vertigo_ and _2001_ when he made _Inception_ and _Interstellar_
C'mon bro have you not seen frozen!?!?!?
@@Stonehengoo mulholland drive is great!!! 😎👌🏻
No wonder Hitchcock is the master of suspense
one of the best movies ever
I'll still go for rear window and psycho
Not "one of"! The best movie ever!
My favorite movie of all time.
My grandma really loved this movie and now I remember her, when I see!💕
Masterpiece⚘
The scenery is so beautiful in vertigo you could watch it even with the sound turned off..
The narrator is really killing the vibe.
i think the narrator gives such a vintage vibe, it excites me
@@lyd9813 yes!!!
Yes, he really takes the thrill out of the thriller, making it sound mundane. But he couldn't kill the amazing visuals, and all of Jimmy Stewart's emotions.
Never mind. It’s original.
No.
"playing two amazing roles?"
you might as well not watch the movie after reading that trivia
Do you not like the movie?
Good point. That irritated me too. But most people probably would miss it without having seen the film.

yeah why not ? these people who always say about "spoilersd" etc..what does that mean. a movie is supposed to be entertainment, and something interesting. its a motion picture, its not what you "heard about " from some other person, like heresay or whatever,.
@@studiodevelopers2467 But most of the fun of mystery movies is having the secrets revealed as you watch it. If you're told before hand that Kim Novak is playing to characters it gives away the plot twist that comes in the second act and indeed, spoils the movie.
If only Alfred Hitchcock didn't die and was still making films
YSLVENUS lol Hitchcock would be in his 120’s
@@randywhite3947
wow yeah ! if he would be still making movies that would be awesome ! he would have made a lot more.
@@randywhite3947 ugh why can't certain people be immortal
I mean, he was already a middle aged man when made this film.
Vertigo, a Movie Masterpiece, did not receive any Oscar noms for the brilliant performances of Kim Novak and James Stewart nor Direction for Alfred Hitchcock nor the Picture.
After he made Vertigo, the movie didnt succeed well and drow small money, he though James Stewart was the reason for it and promise himself never to cast him ever again, thats why he wasnt in the movie north by northwest
im back, not Headhunterx1 the reason why Stewart wasn’t in North By Northwest is because the Character changed from a traveling Salesman to a Madison Avenue advertising Executive
@@randywhite3947 thats what he wants you to think
im back, not Headhunterx1 dude look it up if I’m not mistaken the screenwriter said it himself
@@randywhite3947 so that may be ONE of the reasons, and maybe hitchcock made the screenwriter believe such a thing, hitchcock is a sick man (like what he did to the birds female actor) regardless of his fantastic movies
Best film of all time
Best movie in the world..
Being from San Francisco it’s so beautiful how well Alfred captured the many locations here it creates the story I love this classic!
2:08 just makes me think about those adorably hilarious cat videos.
Jimmy Stewart went to a level of acting in this movie that is truly unreal.
I recommend the Vertigo walking tour in San Francisco. Really enjoyed it - good to see some learn some other history to the city too.
I would be scared too if I saw heights. My dad has vertigo and like many (especially in TV), they get vertigo when they turn their heads far to the left or right, not just by looking out a window
Mesmerizing film with incredible soundtrack. I love this movie!!
One of my favorite movies!!!
Why tho? I'm literally watching this movie right now on AMC and it's beyond boring I want my last two hours back
Just watched this!! Mindblowing and amazing movie!!! Hitchcock was a genius. They don't make them like they used to nowadays...
My all time favorite movie. :-)
Magnific. One of the Best movie ever .
Saw this and North By Northwest re-mastered on the big screen at BFI London. Awesome!
One of best ever
my favourite movie, just spectacular
🙋♀️
It's more than just a masterpiece! It's the best movie of all time!
@@Rwienemann2944 True.
still one of the best movies in history. They cannot make anything like Vertigo today.
i didnt really like this film as much as rear window, strangers on a train and dial m for murder, these are my favouirte ones but yeah old movies are still better than today
Why do you say that? I'm genuinely curious because I just now got to see it and it sucked balls
i watched this movies in 2013 it's defenetly between the best ever made, not in the US but in the world! back then you can see that actors relied more on their acting than now with special effects, this is real, raw classical acting at its finest.
Bro this acting is straight trash
Definitely an Alfred Hitchcock classic!
I can't understand how some commentators here say they find this great movie boring, stupid and overrated. Obviously these people haven't understood the plot and the underlying themes. I suggest you go back to the movie and watch it again with a more open mind or perhaps check out Paul Hyder's book 'Hitchcock's Vertigo: A Personal Journey Through the Greatest Film Ever Made' that explore the deeper motifs that are to be found beneath the surface of this Hitchcock masterpiece.
The other people dont understand this movie
This film is so sick! Love it!
Brian De Palma is so obsessed with this film as I am.
What a film!
Love this movie!
love this film
Everything is great in this movie
Best Classic thriller
The good movies are just as good now, and deal with themes sometimes even more psychologically complex than older films. Films like fight club and eternal sunshine cover some pretty heavy territory. There are plenty of good stories, Fargo and The Big Lebowski were compex humorous tales. Theyre out there you just have to find them. And everyone forgets how many bad movies there were back in the day because today we only see the great ones that made it through all the junk.
The beauty and splendour of technicolor
Damn these trailers just give away the whole movie
Masterpiece
Awesome. I should watch it again.
My All time favorite movie wonderful superb great.
My favorite movie
Gorgeous movie.
This film carry Everything that Hollywood created in the 30s, 40s and 50s. It's almost a homage because he was a experient genius who worked in all the generations of cinema(mute/sound/color), he knew that at that time (late 50's) cinema would start a new era. The color of this film has a narrative and symbolic function, he was not the first to do this, but he evolved the idea to a new level that is still used in the same way and that has not extended to the present day.
This film is deep, Hitchcock is deep an the critics ain't bullshiting puting this film as a top 5 or 10 of all time.
I was born 15 march 1958
I loved this movie.
The best film of Hitchcock
Looks like a good movie. I wanna watch it.
I'm glad that I didn't watch the trailer before the movie.
Nice I love it before watching ❤️❤️
Amazing movie !

Love and Death stand as Polar opposites in the Emotional spectrum, but in this Masterclass by the Master of Suspense, Hitchcock is able to fuse the 2
If you haven't watched this movie, maybe you really have a Vertigo
WHAT AN AMZING PREVIEW! It's got it ALL!
An amazing film I have seen several times. One of the best of Alfred Hitchcock. A great story beautifully acted by 2 actors I have always admired...JOHN STEWART & KIM NOVAK.
John Stewart?

The greatest movie of all time, by the greatest director. And with the most powerful musical score. It dwarfs the miserable, computer-assisted filmmaking of today.
Pine Forest sorry amazing movie but Citizen Kane is the number 1
Johnny Citizen Kane isn’t even the best Orson Welles film let alone better than Vertigo

Do you actually like it or it's just because of what critics say.
That film wont even be in top 20.

Dawson Djodvorj most likely the second option

Imagine living in this movie. I do. I live three blocks from the old Empire Hotel (now the Hotel Vertigo)
its cool they named it after the movie
youre so lucky
Vertigo, Shining and Goodfellas, in no particolar order. The best of the best
Stupendous film. And as for Kim Novak 💖
I prefer to educate the misinformed, shallow, tasteless, uninspired, youthful movie goers of today rather than insult them
The opening song is the opening to the born this way music video
stan the man the kubrick man is a filmaker, my attention is kept!!
Great list. I'd add Frenzy, The 39 Steps, and Strangers On A Train to that list. He's got so many fantastic films to choose from that a top 10 list just isn't enough which is a VERY good thing!
"Frenzy" is great stuff even though it came near the end of Hitch's life. It's a lot of twisted fun. Interesting how he "came home" at the end----it's a thoroughly British film.
They don't make movies like this anymore. Hitchcock is an icon, he deserves a distinctive statue. I know he wasn't everybody's cup of tea, was a strange fellow with his actress's. I still need to watch Vertigo. I'm very impressed by this film trailer, love Hitchcock.
The movie is a masterpiece if you watch it as a tragic love story.. Trust me
right , it is masterpiece
Bridge on the River Kwai didn't have a lot of gunplay. It won Oscars for acting, screenplay and music because it was well acted, with an intelligent screenplay and great production.
Aside from the whole blowing up a bridge thing...
this was the best in my book and rear window and strangers train
I’m about to watch this movie for the first time
You ever seen the movie Vertigo Kid Now Gimmie the doll 🤣🤣
These older trailers are SO good. They really sell the film. Today, however......
Hitchcock at his best
This is my top 10 favourite Hitchcock films:
10. Psycho 9. The Lady Vanishes 8. Lifeboat 7. Spellbound 6. Rebecca 5. The Birds 4. Rope 3. North by Northwest 2. Strangers on a Train 1. Vertigo (my 5th favourite film of all time)
Guess you don't need to watch the movie when it is all right there in the trailer...
eclipsesonic rear window?
Kim Novak is still alive!!! A legend.
I'm 13, I love this, Psycho, Notorious, Dial M for Murder, and to Catch a Thief are my favorites. Not a big deal. It's not like anyone will care, or I expect them to.
In most of what is now written about Vertigo, Judy is described as a "brunette." I have tried to tell people for years that she was a redhead.
Her hair color shows well in Judy's first appearance on a sunny sidewalk, but either time or restoration has dulled her hair to a brownish auburn in most of the rest of her time as the real Judy.
I think Vertigo is the best movie Hitchcock made, and certainly the most alluring. The woman who never really was -- Madeline, who seems almost ghostly even when presented in the flesh, with her ash blond hair, her fog-gray suit, and her inhumanly untouchable quality -- is impossible for a real, earthly woman to match -- even when they are literally the same woman. Judy is vivid, vibrant, smiling, adoring, and more overtly sexual than Madeline, but the very fact that she is there, interested and AVAILABLE, is working against her.
Judy is a very real, human character; so too, for that matter, is Midge. But Scottie seems incapable of a real relationship with a real woman; he's handicapped by his ghostly fantasy woman. I suspect every real woman has come up against something like that at some time in her life.
A great movie but misnamed: Vertigo is commonly caused by a problem with the way balance works in the inner ear, Acrophobia is the extreme or irrational fear or phobia of heights. So the flim should be called Acrophobia which for some people is a bit to close to Arachnophobia, which is the unreasonable fear of spiders and other arachnids such as scorpions. :-)
good movie
"Rear Window" is a great film, but I happen to enjoy the films in my list more. I know that's a rare opinion though. However, I won't be surprised that it will climb in my top ten when I watch it again.
going to see this outdoors on big screen tonight
