    how do you distinguish if something is common or not common tho for the name rule

    • @preppros
      @preppros  Рік тому +5

      It all depends on if the identifier (the thing before the name) is specific to 1 person or not. As I said in the video, an identifier like "friend" is not specific since we do not know which friend is being referring to, so the name is necessary and there are no commas.
      If the identifier is something like "best friend" or "youngest sister," the identifier is specific to 1 person and then the name is unnecessary information and can be removed with commas.

      @@user-ur6yd2xm6i I would love to but the ACT forced me to take down all my practice ACT test explanations due to copyright issues. The ACT doesn't allow us to record explanations with their tests. I'm going to write my own test(s) and post them on UA-cam. The math test is already done and available on UA-cam! I'll do an English section next once I have some time to get it written and filmed.

    started at a 40/75, currently average about 66-69/75 of questions. I tend to get a lot of questions wrong in the last or last 2 passages. Are the passages in difficulty order?

    • @preppros
      @preppros  5 місяців тому +5

      No, there is no order of difficulty on the ACT English Test. If you are missing more questions later on your practice tests, the issues is likely losing focus or time management (if you are rushing to finish).

    Great videos. But at 1:45, how can you say that is not specific to one person? It is true that there may be multiple organizers, but the way the sentence is written, one could reasonably assume that she is the only one. Perhaps I am not quite understanding what "specific" means in this case.
    By definition, one can only have one best friend. Perhaps it is because the title, "festival organizer," itself does not convey a feeling of uniqueness?
    What if, though, the writer of this article knew that Dottie Thompson was the only festival organizer? Would that have any effect on how the sentence should be written?
    And what about a sentence that describes a CEO? Generally, that title belongs to one person.
    Tomorrow, the CEO, Bill Smith, will be at the meeting.
    Tomorrow, the CEO Bill Smith will be at the meeting.
    I just looked it up, though, and it is possible for a single company to have multiple CEOs. In that case, which of the above sentences would be correct?

    • @preppros
      @preppros  7 місяців тому +1

      Good question. For this question, since "festival organizer" is not specific to one person (there are a bunch of festival organizers in general and could be more than 1 for this event as well), there are no commas. Even if the author knows that there is only 1 organizer, there are still no commas because the reader does not know who is being referred to.
      The CEO example also would have no commas assuming this is the first time we are given the name Bill Smith. "the CEO" is not specific to 1 person (there are a bunch of CEOs). If we had already introduce Bill Smith as the CEO, so the readers knows who the CEO is, then you can have commas.
      If it was instead like "The CEO of Apple," that is specific to 1 person, so then there would be commas.
      Again, they generally do not include borderline examples like the CEO one that you made up on the ACT. The names rule questions on the ACT are quite clear as long as you know the rule.

    1:33 What if the friend was already identified?
    I have a friend who lives next door. We have been friends for years. My friend, John Smith, is coming to my house for dinner on Saturday.

    • @preppros
      @preppros  Рік тому +2

      If the friend is identified in a way that makes it clear exactly who is being referred to, the name is unnecessary and can be placed in commas. In your example, I still think it needs commas since you could have multiple friends who live next door, but it's borderline (so it won't be like this on the ACT).
      If instead you example was like the one below, then it would need commas for sure.
      I have a friend who lives next door. We have been friends for years. That friend, John Smith, is coming to my house for dinner on Saturday.

      No, I wouldn't use those. It's best to use practice ACTs written by the ACT. There is a website crackab.com/act that has some old ones. You can also buy the ACT Prep book (it's a big red book) that has practice ACTs as well that you can use.
