After having open heart surgery 3 months ago I have to learn to play all over again. I know what to do but I got to get my hands to do it. This lesson will help speed up the process. Thanx👍
@@CameronCooper when I fully recover I'm hoping for Skype lessons with you. You are a phenomenal player and I think you have a style all your own which makes you stand out from the crowd.
One great legato player that doesn't get mentioned often enough for his use of it has to be Dave Murray from Iron Maiden. His technique is so fluid and he has incredible dexterity and strength. I love the creamy, thick tone he gets on his solos with that selector in the double humbucker neck position. It's the perfect contrast to Adrian's more staccato pick heavy wide vibrato style of playing, but yet they compliment each other so well. I've learned a few Adrian solos and licks but not much of Davey's so this explanation and analysis of legato will really help. Cheers Cameron! 👍
Your lesson opened up a whole new universe for me! I struggled for years to achieve that special control and fluidity that can only be felt, not expressed. Thank you for making this happen!! I am forever grateful to you!💙
Great lesson these sequences are played by a lot of great players and they are hard to pick out when you hear them fast this lesson takes the mystery out and opens a lot of doors thanks Cameron
Fantastic lesson Cameron ! At last a clear lesson from a decent teacher that shows the meat of the lesson first and then speeds it up to show what’s possible and not just showing off . Thanks loads buddy
Also take your time guys , Don't start hammering the fretboard with your fingers ,your fingers will get strong with time , don't have to hit the board hard , had to learn that the hard way back in the days after it led to tendonitis in fretting hand
I had nerve damage which stopped me playing for 3 years just I was taking off. when I could play again, I couldn't do what I knew what I could do. so got on with life and put guitars in storage. now, I've started getting serious again and your vids are really helping get my muscle memory back . I can't thank you enough.
Hey there, I'll tell you something I've been playing since 84' and I so wish we had the tech that we have now. Bro you would have made my learning next level way earlier brother. I came up in a very small town in NC and it was very hard for me at first cause there was no one to get lessons from so I had to learn by ear and I never really got some of The licks my favorite guitarist were playing like Yngwie and lynch, Rhodes just to name a few, my point being, you would have been my straight up go to guy for lessons brother. Your great and I really love what your doing, Legato saved my playing and what your doing is awesome sir and thank you brother.
Why everyone is over complicate these??? And you're the only one?? Who can teach total newbies like me, at 43 to awesome techniques like this. Subscribed. And thank you again. 🤘🙌
Awesome as always. I love the Iommi mention in this video! His trills are settled quite literally at the foundation of heavy metal! Much of his solo work had some insanely tasteful Legato-Esque trilling. The part in this video about the exercise where you would alternate finger trilling between middle ring and pinky reminded me of the famous dimebag clinic video. He demonstrated his exercise he created for warming up and developing his technique . Starting up at the high frets from high string to low string he would trill the same pattern down the neck until he wasn’t able to anymore… then switch fingers and repeat! What a legend! Very underrated technique here! Thanks for your time Cam. Look forward to the next video! Oh! And btw, I’m currently sitting at home waiting on my San Dimas pro mod to arrive!! You were definitely the reason I went for this model!
I like your guitar playing technique and sense of tone.Just keep it up. These are great tips for breaking down the tones and scales on a guitar:That's when it's worth practicing on the guitar. It gives you various abilities. As this guy is currently showing, playing great.
had a stroke and have to train my left and right again but your lessons help and i need to learn th estepu up step two three. i forget all it is madderning.
I love Charvels, one time i bought an Ibanez Prestige which was around $1500 USD and immediately returned it. The Charvel sound had way more balls. The ibanez sounded too thin and the neck to me was uncomfortably flat. I l love charvel and fender necks in general.
Yes, I know. Those ultra thin "Wizard" and flat 16" radius necks can hurt your wrist after a while if you're playing chords since it kinda makes you pinch on the strings instead of holding them normally on a more 'C' shaped neck.
Cameron- if you want to see/ hear some wicked legato techiques, check out guitarist Geoff Tyson! One of Joe Satriani's star pupils- dude is a monster! Also check out his work with T-Ride, Snake River Conspiracy & Stimulator.🎸👍
Hey Cam, I got the Red Stripped Series Franky. Should be here today. Been doing a lot of Eddie licks lately. Once in my hands need to figure out how to Skype to get a few EVH lessons. Ill let you know how the Franky is when it show up. I have some expensive strat's but this guitar is calling me, I hope it is awesome for 2 grand. No case though, oh well.
This is a great lesson Cameron as your others; is there some tonal adjustment one needs to do with the amplifier to ensure the notes sustain and don't die away quickly? Thanks
Not really, legato as a technique doesn't demand a lot of sustain. From guitar or amp. However I'm sure it compression was added you could get more sustain.
I have thought often that a left handed player could play standard guitar I..e. right handed strung with great presicion. As your dominant hand seems like it would be great for good licks.
Basically a medium action with 09-42 gauge strings. Even if people copied my set up it wouldn't change their ability to achieve legato technique. It just takes refining, repetition and time.
Also very important regarding any legato playing is the proper setup on your guitar. Unless you have super strong fingers and wrist an expert setup is a must. Just look at Cam's guitar, the strings are pretty much sitting right on the frets and no buzz!! If anyone has some good advice for a an American Strat setup please reply. Where I live there are no good "luthier" types around that can setup my guitar. I've tried but it's still not good enough
Very true! But a lot of you would be surprised, I have quite a high action on my guitars. Most people who play one of my guitars make that comment first. Even then, a good set up can only get you so far. If it's too low where the action is practically kissing the fretboard, I actually find that super difficult
Hardest part for me is getting it to ring same as I picked it. Wonder if my volume is too low or some other thing keeping me from getting a good loud note.
Hey Cam. I’ve been looking over your Charvel demos. Can you please share with me what is currently your favourite Charvel? I’m going to take this into consideration before ordering mine. Thanks heaps.
How do you build strength in the pinky when trying to do a legato with your ring finger down and doing a pull off with pinky? It’s the hardest thing in the world for me because it’s like the 2 fingers are connected and I can’t make them independent from each other when doing legato. For instance doing 1-3-1-4-3. How should one practice doing the 4-3 and build that independence between those 2 fingers?
An important part is to simply use your little finger more. Where you might have used your ring finger for licks and ideas, try using your little finger instead. It's not about strength, it's about accuracy. Accuracy first, strength comes second
CAMERON, how can you make legato licks sound very "BUBBLY" like how EVH makes his Legato licks sound like Bubbles? Are you going to do a Jason Becker Arpeggio lesson video soon because Jason Becker will DOWN sweep an minor arpeggio and then shift 3 to 5 frets and then UP sweep to a different minor or major arpeggio.
Hi Wayne, I sort of explain the answer to your first question in this video when I talk about getting really strong effective pull offs. That's way I feel I get closer to that sort of sound. As for the Jason Becker stuff, it sounds like you already know what to do.
@@leanvanhalen Both sound awesome! The THR10X I use is discontinued now and is best for Van Halen tones if that's what you're after. The THR30II is the best all rounder and has the most features
Lefties should play left-handed. You'll never achieve the same level as if you played guitar left-handed. Anyway, you're a good player, and the video's useful too!
