When I was in college an instructor once said, "To show true mastery of a subject is to be able to explain it in laymen's terms". You sir are a Master!
I’ve always wanted to learn theory to better myself as a guitar player and songwriter, but I’ve never had the patience. Thank you for making these videos. You put them together in a way that makes them interesting and makes me want to learn and apply these techniques.
this is the 1st time i have seen someone actually talking about the theory behind a legato (not just the technique) and applying it to something that makes sense, amazing job
I gave all of the sub 30 years ago what a mistake. your videos are giving me more than all the music teachers I've ever had in my life combined. Thank you so much. Now we're nearly 60 years old my eyes areare opened and I'm starting to do more things than I ever thought I could.
Been teaching guitar for years and I've been watching your content for years. Just wanted to say thank you, I have learned so much about communicating complex concepts in simple ways to students, through your channel. Thanks Jake!
Jake,I have played and picked around on the guitar, for years. Your lessons have showed me the importance of theory, and you sir have taught me so much,I am enjoying guitar like a kid again, Thank you.
the lecture is very concise and easy to follow. while I have never studied theory, I'm able to follow along and it's definitely improved my playing. Thanks Jake!
Signals Music Studio Hi, Jake: Why do you say at 12:55 that to harmonize with A Major, you have to skip up to C SHARP and not just C? Is it because, in order to harmonize, you have to move up (and/or down?) 2 full steps (4 frets) either way, up or down the fretboard?? Thanks for all that you do for us! :-) OR: is a Major 3rd 4 frets? and that's the interval of harmonies???
I can't believe it's taken me this long to learn this! Thank you so much for allowing these to be "free" on youtube for those of enslaved to the rent overlords who can't currently escape to get your full course just yet.
Good teaching man. Technique-wise, im pretty past this kinda stuff, but i still watch to help with the theory aspect of it all. Keep it up, great stuff.
Thanks! I'm still not sure what skill level to make these videos for so I'm gonna try to spread it all out for a bit to see what people like, but I think I'm going to be really stressing the theory from now on.
Signals Music Studio very good! I think at least starting with the lower level stuff is great, im sure theres a bigger audience for that level, and also when you start teaching more advanced concepts, youll be able to link people back to your lower level videos. Either way man i think youre doing great, youre an awesome teacher, and ill be tuning in regardless.
bro I wish u gonna read my comment,I got stuck in study guitar for many time and this video just sets me free and clean up the fear of learn the "hard" part of play guitar
I've been doing the legatto work out shown at the start for a while, but it didn't sound quite right. Ending it on the c# finally got it sounding nice (I always ended on a previously). Such a small change made such a big difference - thanks for this great tip!
I'm way below this level.. but I enjoy watching your instructional content. I learn from it, there's alot of things I had no idea on what was before, but after watching your videos I understand it much better. Thank you
Been watching your videos most of the day after happening on your Lydian lesson while trying to write a Steve Vai-inspired lead. Great stuff all around!
Playing phrygian at the same time as ionian is like playing the note and its diatonic 3rd at the same time. So it's not a surprise that phrygian works here. Mixolydian would also work really well, because it would be the diatonic 5th of whatever you played in ionian
Bro I am a pianist and guitar feels like an instrument designed by aliens, for aliens to me. Still, I watch and enjoy your vids as you have such a great handle on theory. I hope that you never stop making new content.
I only just learned that i can resolve my lead on any note from the chord of the key I’m playing in. 🤔🎶 And i stil have a 1E and a2E and a 3E and a 4E etc. stuck in my head from another lesson 😄
Jake es una persona con una presencia tranquila, relajada, y cuando habla, dice las cosas de una manera que le entiendes. Y eso ayuda a prestarle atención y aprender de él desde su punto de vista. Me cae bien. Es bueno para explicar y aprendes. No donde sea te encuentras un buen maestro de musica que te ayude a aprender más y más sobre la guitarra. 👍
I tried to click the link for download, but it said the page was not found. Is there another way to get these files? Great channel by the way, I have learned so much from you.
I connect shapes the way you said but with the CAGED shapes. Kind of hard since the shapes sometimes have 2nps but it works as long as I don't try to go shred speed then it gets a little sloppy. Time to learn some 3nps shapes it seems lol
Idk how to really ask this question so I hope it makes sense. What is happening when we take the 3rd position of a G major scale and play it where the 5th position once was? It is that what you just did? It’s a mode?
Jake do you have a book? Or an organized pathway for your lessons? I want to start at the beginning and learn from you. I have technique and ability on the guitar with little to no understanding of the theory. Please help!
Hey dude, this is totally off topic but do you have any guitar with a floating bridge? If so could you give some advice? Some dude told me I should only get original Floyd rose because others just don't keep up and make your guitar go out of tune, but I know original Floyd rose bridges can get a little expensive. Do I really need one to get a quality bridge? Great video by the way.
Depending on the style I want to play, I'd probably opt to get a regular floating bridge instead of a Floyd Rose just because of the hassle of a Floyd when it comes to changing strings and tuning. If you're worried about going out of tune while playing live, just get a tuning pedal, but at this point in my career I've just learned to accept that my instruments will never ever ever stay in tune :)
@@SignalsMusicStudio I have an 80's Japanese strat. I removed 2 of the 5 springs from the back. Took off the locking nut. Interesting effect, but probably not always desired or for everyone, I can hit an open E and the octave E on the A string, then bend the octave E up. The reduced tension from the removed springs causes the open E to drop, while the octave E goes up. Need to feel this move, so that a good harmony is achieved, but it's interesting, to me, since it sounds like each string has an independent whammy bar. And the old thing stays in tune through these. Somehow. Must be decent tuners. I also try to wrap the strings a lot, when putting them on. Idiosyncratic and makes the guitar hard to tune, for normal people. 🙃 Add: using 9's, but thinking I like 9.5's. Also thinking about putting the springs back in. Sometime. When I find them. Also: Removed locking nut is not part of the effect, just incidental. Long time ago. I think one of screws was stripped. Locking nut probably better, for anyone trying this at home. And: Removed springs 2 and 4, so 1,3,5 are left. Finally: only the lower, thicker, strings produce the effect significantly. Can still bend the higher, thinner, strings without noticeably dropping other strings. (I need to work on communicating more efficiently, as you do so well :)
can you like... copy the scale shapes from A to G? or the scales remain stationary for every chord? i get confused here.. i wanna learn it please reply...
Hi Signals Music, Im wondering if you could do a video on fret board technique, I have been playing guitar for a few years and have noticed my fingers of my fretting hand tend to not keep as tight to the fret board as I would like for example my fingers bounce off the fret board with each not change i do instead of seemlessly "sweeping' across the board
00:46 Major Scale
03:45 Chord Tones
06:34 Minor Scale
09:39 Connecting Shapes
11:27 Instant Harmonies
Signals Music Studio dd
14:34 all shapes

As we say in Greece true philosophy is when your granny can understand it.
That's like a Einstein quote
Dude this is some high quality stuff which I don't expect to get free of cost. Thanks man

Damn Jake. You just shit on every instructor on UA-cam. Great video!
Bulgarab Aleaev hahaha thank you, that wasn't the goal though lol

Alan Burch Because in A major the 3rd is a major
3rd-C#, in A minor it would be a C instead

I like this channel so much I was every second of every ad
You absolutely blow my mind with your grasp on music.

Best teacher on youtube.
I've been doing the legatto work out shown at the start for a while, but it didn't sound quite right. Ending it on the c# finally got it sounding nice (I always ended on a previously). Such a small change made such a big difference - thanks for this great tip!
Whoa you just blew my mind when you made me understand how the mode shapes are in order on the fretboard.
That harmonizing piece is fantastic info!...

the phrygian alone was so epic sounding haha. I love harmonizing in 3rd's. Great with chords too: I maj9 and vi min9
14:32 Look kids, it's the Locrian Mode, the upside down Ionian.

Love the videos man, watching this now, links are dead though. 🍻
another great video.
A great book for learning 3 note per string shapes without memorizing anything is 'The Universal Scale' by John Parker.
It's available on amazon.
Always so vital. Love your stuff. And would love to hear more of you songs....Hint, hint.
I really enjoy your lessons. I also like the backing tracks you use to demonstrate your lessons. What do you use to create these ?
amazing thanx...
Real master
