My dad bought this album when it came out in 69. I was nine years old. This song made me sit down and it just drew me in. The bass just takes you for a walk through NYC while the piano pours a soft rain on your ears. That snare drum is the heels of your feet as you walk lazily through this masterpiece. John Barry could capture a mood, a story, the emotion of the time, era, and moment. I learned this bass line years ago. What an education. I miss these masters of the art of sound and emotion. So happy to have heard this at an early age. What an impression it left on my life.
Classiest piece I've ever heard! Feels like drinking a glass of martini in the company of an elegant Lady, all miles away from Earth in a Cruise Spaceship.
I was in my late teens when I purchased the 'Midnight Cowboy"" soundtrack album (in 1974 or whereabouts). I was already a fan of John Barry's music. He had an instantly recognizable style that was entirely his. No other composer sounded like John Barry. When I heard this particular piece of music I was amazed at how beautiful it was considering that it was entitled "Fun City", which was a phrase used to describe New York City by its Mayor, John Lindsay. at at time when the city was in the midst of a horrendous economic decline. NYC in the late sixties and seventies was an exciting place to live and also an insane asylum (everything seemed to be happening all at once). The movie captures that very well, and the music by Barry, especially this tune, was widely imitated, noticeably by "Taxi Driver" whose musical score by Bernard Herrmann had echoes of Barry in its jazzy, sultry main theme.
Like others on this soundtrack, this song takes me back to the fall of 1972 when I spent the night with a wonderful and beautiful woman. The entire album played in the background. I'll never forget that romantic night.
Wow just wow John Barry baby. Love it. The sound track of my life, looking out over the city at night thinking I’m alone and then a beautiful dark brown lady touches my arm and she’s slipped into something more comfortable. She’s as soft as the sounds and her aroma is as intoxicating as my martini. We melt in each others arms and Love is on. The music the night the love the life.
From the first beat ...You can feel this song is going to be very suave very cool and smooth and that is just what you get from the masters from the 1960s and 70s ...Oh Yeah I so do miss the Big Band Music Soooooo much....
I bought this on the COwboy soundtrack when I was 11--- flipped out and saw God, decided to stay on the planet. Thank you for this life of music, Mr Barry
Brilliant piece ..... Romantic jazz.... Check out John Barry's music for Petulia Proves he ould write for any genre..... Absolute genius..... Sadly missed

Por supuesto, el gran Maestro, John Barry!!! WoW ¡Estupenda pieza! ******* Su fino y elegante arreglo orquestal, me recordó un tanto la cadencia del tema de Pic Nic, lo conoces? Mil y una gracias!!!!!!!!! Mine ;)
yes, a fun city, in the eyes of Joe Buck, a naive and country boy. However, time will show him its dark side. Barry's music portrays this oscillation between light and dark. 🎧
Anyone actually play this on piano? cause having difficulty with modes. It is Gmaj7 -Dm7-Cmaj7 (x2) -cm7- Abmaj7 - Fm7 . Anyone any ideas of the Abmaj7 chord?? Ab Ionian? Beautifull piece, good test of how well you can play your scales also.

Oh yes yes yes. Looking out over the city below us, the night is quiet but just enough sound to be a comfort.

By the way do you know who performs the piano part? That's not Barry. He just conducts.
Love these strolls down memory lane 😘

Thank you shakataksmothjazz, this is a really nice share. Very nice post to the host!
There's an instrumental on Tom Waits first album (my favorite) that seems to be consciously or unconsciously imitating this John Barry composition.
