    Merci beaucoup. Un normand.

    You don’t show folks where you hide your sneaky trail cam or it just may be the next thing missing. Best thing is a nice little sign, Smile you are on camera. They will never know where it is. A Ring type motion sensor cam would be ideal and probably cheaper option. Best part it can be networked with other sensors.

    For the bamboo if it comes back, the right way to deal with it is to let it grow to full height in the spring, then as soon as it does, cut it back to the ground. Let it grow back, and again cut it right back down to the ground. Keep doing that a couple times and it'll sap all the energy from the plant and it'll die on its own.

    Oh yes, you have to watch out for bamboo! My in-laws had it as a decorative border in the garden of their house in California. The roots grew UNDER the slab foundation and came up on the other side of the house in the rose garden. It took them YEARS to dig out all the roots and eradicate it.

    You got a good video of the trespassers. I hope you can find out who they are. Seems they’ve been there quite a bit, helping themselves to a picnic like they own the place. Sad thing is. You probably wouldn’t of cared if they picnicked there if they asked. I wish the videos could be a little longer. I enjoyed the attic space. So neat to see the old Timbers.

    It would be fascinating to learn more from the gentleman who is the certified historical inspector. Bamboo can make for a great splash of green, and the sound when wind rustles through the leaves is very calming somehow. A group of potted bamboo plants might provide some nice accents for the chateau without being invasive. Thank you once again for a fun video! You two, love your sense of humor!

    Les Compagnons du Devoir is a French organisation dating back from the XIII century focused on apprenticeship of traditional trades.
    Some of the Compagnons have been working since 2019 on restoring Notre Dame de Paris after that horrific fire that almost destroyed the cathedral.
    The Compagnons are very hard to book for work since they are the crème de la crème and always in high demands due to theirs superior skills especially on antique buildings.

    Daphne, I found a brass lamp finial that is almost a duplicate of the short pillar you are standing by, at about 11:30. I thought it was a decent rendition of a classical ornament but am very surprised that that motif could actually exist in full scale. It might have been a popular motif?
    Very interesting to hear about the setbacks of using a chain instead of a downspout.
    I live in New Hampshire and no one uses even gutters because they can't survive heavy snows. They fill with ice and probably just ripped off the houses. I found that it really isn't a problem without them. I put bands of loose stones a few inches deep and about 18 inches wide under them and that may help to stop some of the backsplashing. I have a wood frame house with cedar shakes and they haven't rotted out yet in the past 25 years. But you can see some slight darkening in the bottom two rows .The house is gray so I don't care.
    I don't think Chateau Purnon has gutters either. It has a wide stone ledge at the bottom of the moat that takes the pounding of the water. They're trying to restore the house to it's 18th century condition so I don't think they are going to put any in.
    I don't understand what the installer meant by the water was "ejected" in a heavy rain? That's the word the CC used.

    • @louisegogel7973
      @louisegogel7973 Рік тому +1

      Gutters and snow and ice aren’t the best of friends for sure, but, here in Vermont, on one small roof they help some. The rest of the roofs are gutter free. Bands of gravel stones under where the water comes down from the roof takes great care of erosion and splash.

    • @paulrosa6173
      @paulrosa6173 11 місяців тому +1

      @@louisegogel7973 - So people in Vermont don't tend to use them either? . To prevent fascia rot a few years ago I cut some pressure treated lumber extensions to make water fall farther from the surface. Those aluminum drip edges don't work that well so I pushed them out about two inches with the tapered extension It's about two inches deep by 1.5" to 1" high. The top slopes to roughly match the roof slope. That's working very well. It also provides an extra horizontal shadow making the facia look more like a molding.
      Because we always seem to be under water restriction in the special district I live in. I have a take down gutter to collect some rain water to wash my car. I have 50 and 35 gal. fiberglass barrels that are rigged vertically in series and it's amazing that the average rainfall will fill it from less than 200 sf of catchment area. When the temp stays below freezing all night, it's time to drain the tanks and put the gutter aside for the winter.
      I looked and Chateau Purnon does have gutters. But when you see pipes cutting through string courses does that mean they were installed at the time or added later? The gutters are very large and sit on the top of the stone cornice but I can't see them.
      BTW- Back in 95 I went to Versailles and saw pvc gutter pipes on the Cour de Marbre. I wonder if they were temporary? And they were left white?

    • @louisegogel7973
      @louisegogel7973 11 місяців тому

      @@paulrosa6173 Gutter use in Vermont is variable. A large overhang is very useful indeed. And I like your two inch push out for the drip edges. I have plenty of facia needing replacement for that same reason as your solution is solving. Two stories up however, requires more than just a ladder, so I am hoping my children will pitch in with their talents and a scaffold. I might replace the facia with plastic wood AND push the drip edge out a bit more.

    • @paulrosa6173
      @paulrosa6173 11 місяців тому

      @@louisegogel7973 - I tend to use pt for any replacement wood. About every ten years i'd have to replace rotted window frames. The bottom of the frame against the aluminum sill would rot out. All the pt replacements have lasted so far and the earliest replacements about 25 years ago are still very solid.
      Another thing I found was pvc boards could be used to replace the d-box that had cracked completely above the water line but still stayed intact. I took it all out without disturbing the gradient of the inlet pipe from the septic tank and the four pipes out to the chambers. It was so close to the surface the 30 plus years of winter freeze had broken it into small enough pieces above the water line it was easy to remove. The bottom with the water had never frozen, I suppose because the effluent must lower the freezing point. The cracked parts must have been saturated with cleaner ground water. The PVC box will certainly outlast me. I'm sure it's impervious and I check it to make sure some plastic gauges I made to correct for settlement over the decades are still in position and the water is flowing evenly through the four outlets to the drainage field. I did the repairs two years ago, checked it last year, skipped this year and will probably try to check it next year. Maybe next year I'll use some of the vinyl cement I still have and cast a new cover for it? The existing cover is still three concrete blocks but they show some spawlling on the underside. BTW - Isn't the real reason for posting no trespassing signs on the estate the issue of liability? A trespasser can't sue if they are injured on the property. Is it safe to say France would have the same legal principal?

    That makes me mad about your trespassers and the fake accounts! People around here (Georgia) burn the ground to get rid of the bamboo because those roots go so far! Interesting to see that there is a better way to get rid of it..another great video!

    To clean the windows from fingerprints you can use powdered chalk in a linen bag.

    One of the reasons that the staircase is so acoustically echo-istic is that there are no tapestries or furniture in the alcove below. Did the chateau not come with furniture etc when your grandffather left it to you??

    If I remember right, you two don't live in the chateau. If you're not on the grounds people are going to know that and take advantage. I hope you stop them. It's one thing if someone picnics there. It's another when they are stealing your stuff! Good luck. Love your vlog.

    Just think, if they didnt vandalize & steal they could have enjoyed your jetty for years without you knowing. Thieves are stupid?🙃

    Plenty of cameras and plenty of signs letting people know if they enter the property they are on camera ... Also sensor flood lights for the deck area ... 100W LED ASTRA Premium Floodlight 6400K

      Great ideas! We have several private property signs and a stone wall boundary but a few spots along the wall were broken into. We will be sure to mend and put up more signs 👍

    When i first saw Ian holding the trail camera in his hands it looked like a Claymore.... which is a drastic yet very effective way to deal with trespassers.

    You should give concerts...
    'light' concerts...
    happy making music to Your people around, without big organization, tradition and big money...
    only music together...
    in these shaddy times...

    Great work on the windows! I’m glad you caught the trespassers. We use trail cams all the time. We get loads of deer, fox, cats, hawks, & owls. ❤

    There's very little about you guys and your projects I don't like. You're really healthy souls and help me keep a better perspective on humanity, given this crazy world. I do wonder, missed it if you've ever said, but do you guys actually live day to day in any part of the chateau?
