Just 57 years ago since Reggie Jackson racist experience and 60 years ago since The Civil Rights Act was put into the Law of The Constitution. Not that long ago.
The timeline of development of modern values is fascinating. It’s been less than 200 years since individual freedom was viewed at all positively (roughly the same time frame as when all white men got the right to vote). And only about 100 years since women attained equal legal status. That is after thousands of years when all people were functionally slaves. We still have a very long way to go, but it is worth recognizing just how new humanity really is to the concept of human rights.
Yes..Martin Luther King, himself, was still asking for a “dream” only a generation ago. Let’s not forget.

My college professor spoke on her experience growing up in those segregated times. It took the whole class period. Very interesting stories. Her parents didn't even allow her to have black friends.

I'm in my 20s, and Reggie Jackson is only 6 or 7 years older than my dad. This history is so important, both for education and for honoring all the amazing people we never learn about.
My favorite (horrifying) fact about segregation and racial progress is that Paul Rudd is older than interacial marriage in the United States. This stuff is very recent, and we should never try to erase it or whitewash it.

I don't think this was some cynical ploy to drive clicks. The crew had a genuine news story, but the commentary fell flat. Let's be real, two 30-something white guys don't add much to the conversation. The editing crew probably felt they had to beef up the clip before uploading to UA-cam. Understandable, well-meaning---but disrespectful.
The rest of this comment is for FTF (tl;dr---you should hire me).
FTF focuses almost exclusively on football and basketball. And that's fine. Baseball, hockey, golf, tennis, and soccer just don't hold my interest for whatever reason. Given the popularity of the show, I'm not alone. The problem is, when everything is nonstop LeBron/Mahomes chatter, you end up with strange segues (as this video demonstrates). More variety allows for smoother segues.
That brings me to my other comment about Olympic coverage. The Olympics are fun to watch (and bet on), and most of these sports I've never done in my life. Maybe I'm weird, or maybe the rest of the audience would appreciate some Olympic coverage, too. At least cover basketball... Gobert and Wemby in Paris? How is that not a storyline?
Reggie's story was also a tribute to Willie Mays, because it was a reminder of what Willie had to endure in his early career.

In 1968 I drove from California to Tupelo, Mississippi for a family reunion. Driving around one day with a male cousin down from Chicago and a female cousin who lived there in Tupelo, we decided to stop and get something to eat. We saw a hamburger stand but my female cousin said , "we can't eat there it's a ni--er place". Bob and I looked at each other and I immediately turned into the place. The black guys out front didn't take kindly to our presence until one of them pointed to the California plates. Bob and I had a good meal and conversations while our female cousin was down on the floor in the back of the car so she wouldn't be seen by the local white people.

Look I was born in 76 and in 1990 as a freshman, in Louisiana, we had a game in Baton Rouge where David Duke was from and when the lights came on, the coaches and ump got together on the mound and called the game in the middle of the 6th inning for the safety of our players cause we weren't an all white team. We had black and white players, the team we were playing were all white cause of the area where we were playing. This was 1990! I still remember getting lectures about certain towns not to go to cause of the presence of clan members and be careful how you talk to the police if you get stop cause you don't know if they're one of the clan. This was part of my growing up and I'm 47

I guess the argument is that we haven't seen enough of a sample size to know if his success is a fluke, especially given his great supporting cast. That's somewhat fair, I think. He's only been in the nfl one year. With Trevor though, we've gotten enough of a sample already, and he is in no way a 2nd tier QB unless that 2nd tier is every other QB in the league.

Reggie was an incredibly confident and prideful athlete and man. So he is describing a TORTUOUS experience for a man like him. It truly is a blessing for all of us that he got clear of that dreadful place before he had done something that would have destroyed his future and his life!
Shut up Nick Wright. The bias against Brock Purdy is just sad and outrageous. Trevor Lawrence can stink it up but nope, no honest analysis there. Brock got the Niners to the Super Bowl and played well. Lamar choked like always but nope, no criticism there. Allen choked, no criticism there.
Did anyone see the obvious difference between Lawrence and Purdy when they went head to head? I could not believe how inaccurate Trevor Lawrence was when you see him in a game with somebody like Purdy. It was laughable. I don’t care who was calling the plays. There is a clear winner there.

I may be experiencing the recency effect, but this is your best segment yet. From showing Mr. Jackson's response to Alex's question in its entirety to the commentary each of you delivered, this is how a single, genuine, human moment can overpower laws and actions that seek to restrict the truth from coming to light.
You know what I love about athletes? In general they aren't afraid to call a black guy A black guy, and a white guy, a white guy. Athletes talk about things real and I appreciate what you guys are doing and always do on your platform. Blacks and whites Have exceedingly unique experiences in life and generally neglect to understand the full scope of those realities... this kind of interview and segment helps us all realize how different but also similar we really are. I can tell you without question his story’s realness. I’m from a smaller town in Alabama and I remember when I was in 6th grade we had our first black students attend school. This is early 2000’s we’re talking about where I had to witness groups of kids refer to him by the N-word as a joke. I don’t blame the kids at all but this is telling as to what their families were teaching them at home. I’m thankful that today we have made

I'll never not be amused by how, as much as they argue about Purdy, they all have him ranked around the same place when made to actually rank quarterbacks against each other.
I think the argument is really more about how good he is going to turn out to be since he’s still so new. The people who want to rank him higher are held back by uncertainty not because of anything about Brock but because he’s only played a season and a half worth of games and his numbers were so good last year he’s either amazing or it was a fluke. The people who want to rate him lower can’t because of his numbers and playing well in the superbowl

@@Brian-oz8io I find the argument that Jimmy G also put up good numbers with the Shanahan Niners to be a pretty good one, but do think Purdy, to his credit, has been better than Jimmy was. The big tell will be how his extension ends up going next summer to see how the organization really feels about him and whether they think they can do this with any pretty good QB, or if they think he's special.
@@ShadeXH yeah I was watching all the Jimmy games when they were winning and arguing with my friends that despite the record, he was not good. All you had to do was watch him consistently make the same mistakes, throw into triple coverage over and over again. He seemed completely unaware of multiple defenders bearing down on him and would just stand there and get sacked in the same way over and over. I was afraid when he had the ball, afraid when I knew he was going to pass. He would put the Niners behind where they should be and the strength of the team would barely put them ahead enough to scrape out wins.
Brock doesn’t do that. He’s actually a net positive on the team. So I think it remains to be seen how good he really is, but Jimmy had like what.. one really good season? If Brock keeps doing what he’s doing I’m prepared to believe it isn’t just because of his team or weapons. Niners offensive line (with the exception of Trent Williams) has been terrible and Purdy has had to have awareness, scramble, and quick release times to stay alive out there and make plays.
He passes the eye test. If I had to rank his true skill I’d say he’s probably somewhere around Baker Mayfield, Goff, or Dak’s level. And he’s so young, he has the chance to keep improving. What is it Brou always says? It’s better to learn while winning. I’d like to see what he can do with a little more time in the pocket like Goff usually gets.

2nd thing: Complaining that Purdy has had a perfect scenario to succeed and overlooking the fact that Mahomes has had just as good of a situation is ludicrous.
I’m not saying Purdy is as good as Mahomes, I’m just saying that they act like Mahomes overcame having the greatest offensive coach in history with the most dominant WR & TE in football to begin his career. Mahomes has had arguably the best situation a QB has ever had in the history of the NFL.
Put Mahomes in Baker Mayfield’s shoes where he was drafted to a team with a terrible coach, terrible team who had only won 1 game combined in their previous 2 seasons and tell me he’d have an MVP and a Super Bowl. There’s no way.
Brock Purdy is at least the number one Quarterback in being talked about on this show. That stat is pretty clear.

Its also not true that 49ers have best offensive skill group in the league. The Eagles, Miami, Detroit, Cincinnati perhaps others all have just as good if not better skill positions, and if you include offensive line into the equation, then its even more stark. Only Purdy though is ever penalized for having good players on his team. Steve young, Joe Montana, troy Aikmen...this was never a thing until Purdy, and its ever been done to purdy.

It’s funny when people say get over it when they haven’t experienced the same trauma as another person. Obviously it wasn’t that long ago, my grandma used to tell me horror stories from that time. She said she was in daily fear of her life and my mom’s, I couldn’t even imagine.
It’s not just that black people who lived thru this are still alive, it’s that the same people who treated them like this are still alive too. This is not a solved issue

Wow. My initial comment got deleted in less than two mins; so i suppose i must explain why I called Reggie a 'winey bich'. First the 'N word' was not universally regarded as a foul/abhorrent word until around the turn of the millennia. It could have been (and often was) simply a reverence to a person of color. Second, was Reggie the only black man on the team that wasn't allowed in the restaurants? (there were other black men of the team) Finally, Reggie Jackson was an asshole. He was the subject of ire and vitriol across the nation, not necessarily bc of his race, but bc of the way he conducted himself. I was just a young boy but I remember Mr, October and his unbelievable cockiness and... well, and I'll just leave it at that. That, combined with his playing for the yankees, and I would not allow him to eat in my restaurant either (if i had one). So, that make is it (1) Reggie Jackson and (2) Kanye West as the only men of color who are not invited to eat at my house. All other peoples are more than welcome.
So my point is that Reggie's actions (and not his race) very well could be the reason he experienced all that he did.

Reggie is a strong willed human and he fought through the pain to make it easier on future generations for black athletes. Unfortunately you still have places like Boston and Utah that still live in the 50s. Sometimes in life we have to deal with discomfort to make life better for our family and younger generations moving forward. Reggie is one of the greatest clutch batters of all time and also one of the strongest minds in sports history. I tip my hat to you Reggie you're stronger minded than I am and I'm definitely inspired by what you went through and how you handled your life.
