I appreciate you taking the time to do this. I followed your steps and replaced my worn-out shifter with a unit for a 997, too. Totally worth it - the feel is MUCH better. Thank you!!!
Great video. Just finished doing mine. The first time I screwed up and had to remove the center console again because I didn’t sit the cables quite right into the springs!. Anyway, it works great now and without any doubt the shifting feels a lot more direct with shorter throws. Totally worth it, even with my mishap!😂
THE BEST diy on this job I’ve seen! Most of your others are also the best. I gotta say, though…has anyone ever told you that you sound just like Goodfellas-era Ray Liotta??
Great video! From my research i've found that the GT3/GT3RS share the same shifter. The only difference between the normal 997 shifter and the gt3/rs one is the two bushings are metal. I found Phenix Engineering makes a metal bushing kit, which is $70, so you could save some money and still have that gt3/rs experience. I ordered my 997 shifter for my 996 C2 and will do the phenix upgrade if it is still lacking.
Rebuilding a 997 shifter with the Function First Shift Right kit is awesome. The GT3 shifter is nothing special. Also look at the the shifter linkage PIVOT BRACKET on the transmission. Play in that bracket pivot is a big cause of lost motion.
Hi, yes I've put a lot of time on it recently and it was certainly worth the upgrade in my opinion. It doesn't drastically change the experience (similar throws, similar effort) but everything feels tight and with more precision. That said, even with the new shifter I really feel that the shifting experience in the 996 is still subpar for such an iconic car. I would have expected a world class shifting experience but instead, it's just "good". Hope this helps!
No, no problem George. I was getting a feel for each gear by putting some force on the shifter but not enough to engage the gears. I think that's what you were seeing. The shifter works fine and has improved the overall feel.
A R, you'll need to put the shifter in a precise position before fastening the shifting cables otherwise the calibration of all shifts will be off. The neutral lock locks the shifter in that desired position.
You want the shifter rod when in neutral to be in the middle between 3rd and 4th. That way from neutral you can shift into 3rd by pushing straight up and into 4th by pulling straight down without the need to move the shifter side to side.

Saw the N95 mask in the glove box and immediately had to check the upload date of the video LOL
Thanks so much for this video!! While I installed a Numeric shifter, your directions were spot on!!
Nice! Glad it helped!
Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial - I found it really helpful whilst replacing my 996 shift mechanism!
Glad it helped Matt!
Brilliant video. Very descriptive and visual step by step guide, not many people do that. Thank you
Than you so much of posting this video. I'm about to use this as the blueprint to install my SSK today!
Awesome, good luck! And nice shifter!

Good info, thanks!

Have you had a chance to try this out yet? I'm looking to do the same on my 02 C4S.

@@PIFDIY thanks for the info, mine is on 136k miles so pretty sure this will make a difference...
Any reason why you couldn't get the car into gear after the install? I noticed in your video when you went to test it, it wouldn't budge.

What is the purpose of the neutral lock? Is it really necessary?
