  • This week we give a guide to those wishing to cruise down the River Ouse from York to Hull.
One thing you must be aware of is fuel. Diesel boats can refuel at Hull Marina and Grimsby. However note there is NO PETROL at these locations, if you are petrol powered you must make sure you carry sufficient fuel for your full trip, or have a method of carrying petrol from fuel stations a mile or so away from the marinas.

There is no mooring on the tidal Ouse itself, we have stopped at Barmby, going through the lock onto the Derwent, this is a lovely stopover.
First turn into the Trent, to anchor, you need to wait 3-4 hours for the next flood tide. WE lift about 1/2 hr after the turn of the tide at Trent, this will get you to Hull in the next tide window for the lock.
Do not be tempted to cut corners, especially when you get into the Humber.
Keep a good look out for the channel buoys, they are easy to see ahead. The upper Humber is silting heavily outside of the channel. This month we have had an experienced skipper make a simple error and he was stuck on his boat for 12 days waiting for the next tide high enough to lift him back off the sand bar.
Saying that its a simple run, and very enjoyable, just do your homework, and take care.
    See you in Hull.

Hi cruising time is about 5 to 6 hours, thats allowing waiting at the bridges. Speed there is a limit of 10kts on the Ouse below Naburn lock. However you average will be closer to 8.kts. What you must do however is wait about 3 hrs at trent Falls for the turn of the tide. This is to a). to allow you to get into the tide window for Hull, or Grimsby, and b). to ensure there is sufficient water in the stretch between Trent / Ouse confluence and the Humber Bridge. This area is very shallow, and you must keep in or close to the channel, failure to do so could proove very expensive. We had a few who didnt last year and ended in the boat yard in Hull for repairs.
