    I’m a huge CHICAGO fan. I grew up in Wisconsin and lived within 90 miles of 3 major music festivals, outdoor concert venues and arenas. When Chicago would be on their Summer tours, I could see them 2 or 3 times during the tour. Over the last 5 decades now, starting in the mid to late 70s, I’ve seen the group live 130 times. I was a drummer in High School, and Danny was my idol. Couldn’t get enough. I can remember when he introduced his programmed drumming. I mean, having his drums tuned to the melody as he also incorporated the rhythm was cool to hear and watch. If you watch the most recent Chicago history DVD, Pankow mentions it. he wasn’t a fan of it. If you watch some of the Bill Champlin interviews on UA-cam, he talks about wanting to mix up the Chicago hits arrangements, but the band principals would not have any of it. So, the inflexibility of the Chicago original members to change is why you see both of these talents out of Chicago. Don’t get me wrong, just having the ability to reproduce what is played on the album is a talent in and of itself. Most of the current artists can’t recreate the synthesized, auto tuned crap they put out. This music will live on regardless of who is in the band.

      I just stumbled upon this video and only into the song “Make Me Smile” and was impressed by the playing & singing of Bill Champlin. He’s a master of keyboards and of course the legendary Danny Sep on drums ! Still incredible and hasn’t lost his chops ! If I could’ve seen Chicago live with either Peter Cetera or with his replacement Jason . So far a good video.

    Champlin's voice is still really strong considering he's in his mid 70's here. They sound great. Better than what Chicago tries to attempt now. Everything is crisper and cleaner here compared to Chicago now. And the harmony is way better. Chicago needs a lead tenor that has a powerful clear voice like the guy here. The guy they have now is not that great.

    there are good reasons Chicago is so damn hard to cover, the vocals of Kath and Cetera are unique,same goes for each member, Kath licks are very hard to reproduce, their music is very complex to play and Champlin vocal riffin is just overboard, this lead singer gives off no chicago sound vibe at all, lead guitar takes alot of shortcuts on solo's as well as the brass section. Man if your gonna do chicago you just cant do that crap, you have to slay it note for note and give it the respect it deserves. Danny can still play and was the best drummer they ever had. Some of the vocals were even painfull to the ear...sorry guys. If you want to hear a great Chicago cover band check out Leonid and Friends there from Russia and to boot live is almost as good as the studio songs

    I need a drummer to explain to me why I think Danny is better suited for Chicago's sound. There is something with the sound of his snare drum.

    • @LoyalOpposition
      @LoyalOpposition 2 роки тому +2

      He's the best drummer Chicago has ever had. Still is... The snare doesn't sound too far off from most live shows nowadays. On record, it's a completely different story. In the 70s (and before), the drums had a nice organic sound. Now, it's all electronic, "drum machine", and engineered and produced really awful. The snare was SO loud and phony sounding (trying to be epic.... on every song) starting in the 80s. Now, it's way too loud in the mix and the vocals are so low in the mix (no great modern singers out there).

      Wow, Tris was never half the drummer Danny was. He changed how every single song was played and it lost a lot of impact to me. Danny is the man that created the drum parts for Chicago. Nobody has a better feel for playing the music of Chicago than Danny does.

    • @Jayhawk84

      Listen to hiss bass drum. Too much syncopation for straight songs. I call it “Busy Footing” as a bass player I don’t like drummers who has a busy bass drum foot. Again, for the early stuff where they were kinda Jazz-Rock it was ok.

    I’d go and see this band over and above the official Chicago contingency; they nail it 100% and look like they actually like each other, unlike the other bunch who look like a bunch of old men going through the motions. As an added note, it seems Bill & Jason (yes I know is he’s not here) have improved ten-fold since leaving Chicago.
