I have found none on the web so... I thought I put my 2 cents in.....
to see what happens if you have any ideas or advise for me to try or do something different and thanks for all comments or help!

Thank you so much, I have basically the exact same thing with zero experience. Mine has a few of the same problems, replaced fuel lines, new plugs, stator wires rotting away, but seeing how you've repaired the wiring I think i might try that instead of buying a new stator
What is the circle with the screw in it called mine is leaking
I wish you would have shown how to remove the trigger…removed stater and flywheel no problem. Having a hard time getting to the trigger off….same problem with bad wires. Edit I only removed part of flywheel 5:14 removed center bolts will put them back on and pull it properly.. I should be able to do it now. Thanks for the videos

I have the same motor replaced all wiring harness trigger stator 2 coil packs plugs still has a miss in it can't figure it out

I just got the same motor yesterday an looking to do the same guy said it turns over but I know nothing about boat motors how do I turn it over with out a boat I have battery ... the wiring harness is also a lil messed up just looking for advise on first steps ty Amazibg video btw
Hi yes you make a make shift horse out of wood then one. drop lower part of motor in like half barrel full of water or two get muffs you can see them in this video ua-cam.com/video/NCrQbQIcbJw/v-deo.html
also with out being there you may need to get a book to help with wires
Hey I have question I have 85 hp mercury thunderbolt and the wiring on it was bad so I'm using my old wire harness from a 105 chrysler and I have a blue,purple and green wire on my chrysler harness and a brown wire on my mercury I'm not sure where it goes and why I have 3 extra wires?
Every old mercury I have seen has wiring issues. The wire they used was garbage. My advice for anyone is avoid old Mercury outboards just because of this.

in the bottom of fuel tank outlet hose very small screen if we have same tank hope this helps
Once u removed the flywheel and the stator how do u remove the trigger? There is a large deal that went around the middle nut locking it in it has inside threads
Bought a 78 vanguard boat with a 79 merc 80hp power trim. The guy said it ran then died when they were on the lake. He also said it might be the stator any ideas what it could be? Stator looks new, plugs are new.

Hey Gizmo, I was given an 800 80hp merc outboard. I like you know nothing about it. It has sat for 20yrs but am interested in tinkerin with it. Did you get yours going, are parts available? Where did you find the serial number on yours. If anyone can give some advice it would be appreciated.

Sir please let me know what happens to my mercury 1978 /70 hp out board motor runs for 15 minutes and shuts down and it won't start have to wait for Some time and will start again. I like you video explaining how to troubleshoot
so sorry sold the boat... but in your case could be in fuel system things to check old fuel bubble - cracked , fuel lines old - cracked look at carb bowls see if leaking also fuel line can collapse - hose weak / old hope this helps

i have had 80 and 85 my 80 had a distributor & 85 has a trigger device like your 80 you have a good video about it! i got a 85 with trigger I just got it 3 days ago i never though i would find one! i was looking for a Johnson or Evin-rude older 2stroke motor for wiring and controls of my boat! i found 85 instead all wiring and cabling with control box too!

@@nightmaregizmo i got mercury deals in area 2 of them & Napa has some parts like water pump parts, the mag parts & trigger stuff, i did not understand it now i do! i had one (85 it dropped fire in cylinders when it got hot or warm )years ago I traded it for a repair of a older 80 hp Mercury with distributor, i got my moneys worth! tony the mechanic said leave the 85 put the 80 on your boat with wiring that came with it! & bring it here I fix it in a week plus your 50 merk boat too! he said i do both i had 50 at his shop, it fired up quit started it it run backward, tony said leave it! 3 days later i showed up 2 motors 80 and 85 in back of my truck tony I got bigger problem help! i got now a ranger bass boat with 150 hp xp Johnson/evinrude OMC wired boat I found one motor that older family that was a 60 hp with wiring( 3000 dollar plus repower job) the local Evin-rude dealer is a jerk my boat was full of water & boat shot and motor junk, he said & that was not true, the 60 needed a 20 dollar safety switch to make it run on my boat,ps i wrote BRP marine a nasty gram with what do i do with your test computer on this evinrude motor that was a test unit paid for by old owners of Evin-rude?? it was a pro fisherman's boat my relation? before I found this Mercury 85 as my backup repair motor! back when i got the boat i told them i rather have a merk then that piece of gas drinking crap! 3 2barrels and high test gas it was fun well it ran! the way it end was upsetting I had stroke,blood clots & pain and it all turned around with one piece of info we got test from his blood we have new med try it! it worked! they found the root of the illness!

How did you take the flywheel off? Did you use a puller or take it off some other way?

for anyone trying to figure out the year of your motor, find the serial number on it, then go to oldmercs.com - they have a model year guide - that's how i discovered mine.

I have the same motor....I have an intermittent issue...it will not shut off using the key.....occasionally we have to shut the fuel off to shut it down....I want to wire in a kill switch....can you explain how to do this? Thanks!
so sorry for getting back to you so..... late but had same problem about same time you asked ? i found in mine was there was a short in the control box the wires and rubber insulation had fallen apart and was make a short check there see if that helps and again so sorry for the late getting back to ya thanks from Rich & Peggy
Great Video! I have the same motor with the same issue. I was wondering if you had any issues pulling the fly wheel or the best way to make sure I don’t mess up the timing when reinstalling the flywheel or any other issues you may have had disassembling. Thanks!
for the stalling problem when putting into gear this was one of the problems I had you mit want to check this first up on your controls where the ign key is that box I also found bare wires in there that was making a short when putting in to forward gear make it stall by shorting coils so! before doing anything elsa check that as for flywheel they do make a tool for that so not to damage anything hope this helps

80 hp Mercury It has 4 cylinders. The pistons have a 66.6 displacement. The bore width is 2.88" and the stroke length is 2.56". but please dont take my word this what i found when you go to other sites they want to know your serial number so there 2 spots you can try good luck

nightmaregizmo thanks i think i figured it out, the SN has to be within a range of numbers that the part numbers go by still not sure whats wrong im planning on testing my stator and trigger wires this weekend, also orderd a rectifier since it was cheap

I know this is way too late, but for anyone else out there with this same question, you don't need the year to order parts...just use the engine serial number... it's found on the motor mount / pivot area, a large metal plate is there with it.
@@sicklecell9999 yeah this was a while ago lol..but seems like i did need it for finding a part number. I ended up getting it anyways and it worked.

in some cases bought off ebay but! before you do make sure of your part numbers,,, in some case the person you buy from may not take returns back so thats the down side
Hi..i have a 70hp merc 1978..wont start..does nothing when i turn the
key on.Battery is new,solenoid is new and starter works fine.I even
tried to start it off the solenoid,but doesnt even spark.Now if the rectifier is bad,would that prevent the engine from turning over?

lets go with it wont crank then deal with running part
ok on a no crank problem we need to know if you have power going to solenoid its the small wire
on the side most are red but im not there....... so lets go with small wire on side..
have some one turn the key as to crank / start motor
then you can use a test light or a meter ... you should have around 11.5 volts or more / test light is bright
now lets say the meter / test light does nothing then you need to test that wire from ign switch to soleniod
there may be a fuse in between ..... or bad switch?
so really need to have power from ign switch to solenoid when cranking / starting
now for the no running
its possible the ign switch is bad this why it wont crank / start and or supply power to other components or
you have some blown / bad fuses or bad ign switch i would start there before going into any other motor
electronic parts with waste money on that for a bad switch i hope this helps

I have a Mercury 50 hp 500. I can not find the serial number or the year. Any suggestions. I don't see a tag on it anywhere. Please and thank you for any help!
should be around there, on a metal plate attached to the steering
unit just in front of the motor. You might have to clean or remove any paint over spray or some grime out of the way before you can see it . It loves to hide there, . Hope this helps.

yes up and running then sold it and before I sold it I told the guy to make sure to watch my videos before buying so this way they cant say well you never told me so the next day came down and bought it that was about 1 1/2 years ago and we still talk here there and helped him with other stuff as well.... the over all problem came down to the throttle box there was bare wire in there and every time you go forward almost stall after that repair was all good and hes been happy hope this helps

That would be awesome and I'd greatly appreciate it. I just bought a 1972 Ranger TR3, it came with that engine. The guy I bought it from said it needed a new distributor and to be timed. I can't find any info on the boat or the distributor situation.
