- Photographing the Perseids meteor shower and the milky way
This was likely to be mine and Grants last opportunity to capture the Perseids meteor shower and Milky Way! we’d tried a few times recently around the Brecon Beacons but had no luck from either being a little early to the clouds ruining any chance what so ever!!
We were determined to capture them this evening as the clouds cover was meant to be quite low (30%) With the moon setting early too there was a good window of opportunity to capture the Perseids and mars along with the milky way..
I was using my Fujifilm Xpro2 with the Samyang 12 mm f2 lens with its fast aperture to capture the event.. im very pleased with the results!! hope to do more astrophotography soon!
Please head over to Alyn Wallace’s youtube channel and say hi! that mans a genius!

Brilliant vlog Gareth. You had all those nebulous, star clusters and meteors and you excited about Mars.
Eggless Nebula, Omega Nebula, M23, M25, M22, wild-duck cluster and the Coat hanger and much much more at the southern end of the Milky Way. You can see them all in your time laps.
Stunning time laps also. I only manages 2 meteors this year due to cloud. Also for a crop sensor you divide by 360 if I’m not mistaken 👍👍👍👍
Hey mark. Thanks for that comment. Love that you’ve shared that info. I’m far from an Astro expert haha. You’ve just listed a load of motorways to me 😂 I’ll look into the 360 rule. Was always sure it was 500. I’ll check. Thanks mate. 😊👍🏻
Gareth Danks I’m sure it’s 500 for full frame and 360 for crop. Motorways 😂 yes it dose seem a bit that way, google them they are spectacular.
I will mate. I’m thankful for that information 😊👍🏻
www.lightstalking.com/500-rule/
The 500 Rule for Full Frame Camera
The 500 rule for a full frame camera requires you to set your camera to ISO 3200 or 6400, Aperture to f/2.8 (or as wide as possible) and your shutter speed to 500 divided by the focal length of your camera.
For example, if you are shooting with a 50mm lens, your shutter speed would be 10 seconds (500 / 50 = 10).
If you are shooting with a 24mm lens, your shutter speed would be 21 seconds (500 / 24 = 21 approximately).
The 500 Rule for a Crop Sensor Canon Camera
The crop factor of a Canon crop sensor camera is 1.6 so you need to account for that in your equation. Then it becomes this:
500 / focal length / 1.6
For example, with a 50mm lens it is 500 / 50 / 1.6 = 6 seconds (approximately).
The 500 Rule for a Crop Sensor Nikon Camera
The crop factor for a Nikon crop sensor camera is 1.5 so you account for that like this:
500 / focal length / 1.5
For example, with a 50mm lens, it is 500 / 50 / 1.5 = 7 seconds (approximately).
Shutter Speed Settings for the 500 Rule
Here are the settings you would use, according to your camera and lens. Just remember that the 500 rule is not perfect - you are probably going to have to adjust slightly for your particular circumstances such as light pollution, the angle of the stars or even atmospheric haze.
Lens Focal Length Full Frame Camera 1.5 Crop (Nikon) 1.6 Crop (Canon)

Great video & accent! I'm waiting for the upcoming lyrids meteor shower this mid April to shoot some meteors with a phone XD
Enjoyed that, Gareth, I'd not heard of iso invariance so thanks for the reference. I was in a field on my own, laid on my back doing time lapses during the shower, was awesome. Cheers.
hey andy mate sorry for the delay replying!! yeah im still unsure tho! im happier shooting closer to the needed iso just incase!! ill do more testing :-)
Amazing mate! That was well worth the effort. Great tip about the focal length divided by 500. 👍
Thanks buddy. Glad it worked haha. 😊👍🏻
great vlog, loved the timelapse - I did my first night time shoot on the Friday (10th) at Nash Point, and on the Monday (13th) went to Pen Y Fan Pond, both nights were amazing, to be able to see so many stars and meteors was fantastic....I too didn't realise you could see the milky way with your bare eyes, it was a Fabulous adventure...glad you had a good time!!
Hey Gale. Thanks for the comment. Glad you had a good few shoots! Where’s pen y fan pond? Never heard of that. Did you get some good pics? 😊👍🏻
Gareth, it's just up past Blackwood, toward Abertillery way, search for pen y fan country park........I got, what I think, were a couple of nice photos, it's a big learning curve, just nice to try something different.. 😀
Wow
Loved the video Mate. And the timelapse was awesome. If you ever get out to the west coast of the US let me know and I'll take you out to Death Valley National Park. Some of the darkest skies you will ever see and magical for astrophotography. Cheers and glad you survived the windstorm.
Hey Graeme mate! thanks for that comment! sorry i thought id replied to you ages ago haha! thanks also for that kind invitation!! id love that!! be amazing!! thanks for watching mate!!
Hahahahahaha you’re hilarious. You put off setting up tent and instead went to have a beer 🤣 Great video and images as always
Priorities ay mate. 😂 would have been a VERY long night else haha.
Gareth superb job mate! I love seeing the milky way!! Its been a couple months since I've seen it because of my back injury keeping me from camping. So jealous of 1. your weather and 2. I don't have a pint in the house :(

Hey odd. Thanks mate. Hope your well. Looking forward to heading over your way 👍🏻😊
Gareth Danks me as well buddy!
Good stuff and cant beat sitting in a tent wondering if it is going to end up wrapped around your head. Nice stuff and well filmed. Atb
Haha. Dam right! Makes you appreciate a good tent for sure! 😊👍🏻
brilliant Gareth thanks for sharing this ..can you time lapse with the Sony a7 mk3 ?
thanks Marc.. not quite!! its a bit pants tbh..
thank you for this beautiful video, especially the last part, I can not make too many light pollution here in Antwerp, I want to do this I have to drive about 150 km to the Ardennes and even then you still have light pollution, thanks and good luck to the next, greetings Rudy
Hey Rudy mate!! thanks for watching buddy! i thought id replied to you sorry! im lucky with a few dark sky areas within an hr drive!! glad you enjoyed mate :-)
id love to visit that place the north east coast just seems to have to much pollution to get an image, good video as usual 👍
Cheers craig. Yeah we’re lucky down here 😊👍🏻
you chicken Gareth you should have stayed lol timelapse was brilliant. did you cover you eye piece to stop light getting into camera. another great vlog
haha.. happy to chicken that night mate!! no way was i trusting that tent!! no need for mirrorless mate! plus at night its not necessary anyway :-) thanks for watching mate
Only thing missing was the tin foil hat just in case of aliens 😂 nice one Gareth.
Haha. I wish I’d thought of that!! How funny would that have been! Thanks mate 😊👍🏻
Where’s the A7iii? That’s a beast in low light. Your timelapse was nice but most of the trails were aircraft.
I dodnt have a wide angle for the a7 anymore. Sent the Samyang back. Yeah I know but there were still a few meteors. Not much I can do about that ay. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
Hi Gareth, nice video once again! Why did you send the samyang back?
It always sounds worse in a tent than it actually is. However for wild camping by yourself your tent is way too big. Invest in something lower and streamlined. You really don't need to sit up in a one man tent. Fine if you've got your girlfriend with you but not necessary just for yourself. Pick a one man by weight and reviews. You can always add extra waterproofing if needed.
Fantastic time lapse. It was really worth you being out there for me to see that ;-)
Wow
