The best fighters don’t fight in any particular rhythm so they are so hard to predict. The fella he’s sparring his making certain movements and then jabbing. Ray backs moves away and when you think he’s backing up and follow him out of nowhere he throws a punch combination.
I'm 66 years old, and Ray is the best Welterweight I ever saw, possibly the best fighter I ever saw. The epitome of ballet is grace, and monstrous strength. His boxing was beautiful to watch.
For me the most technically sound boxer I've ever seen. From what I can heard he is showing one of his influences '' Bruce Lee''. Thanks for sharing Ray.
He's even making Bruce Lee noises. 😂 Most martial artists and many boxers have their own versions of the kiai, but Bruce Lee's always sounded like he was mocking and taunting opponents. So does Ray here.
This would be Sugar Ray Leonard training at Caesar's Brookdale on the Lake in the Pocono Mountains for his November 7, 1988 boxing match for Donny Lalonde's light-heavyweight belt and the super middleweight belt in 1988. You can see the resort name on a banner hanging from the ceiling and also on the ring post padded covers, as well as Coors, another sponsor for the fight.
This reminds me of when Sugar fought in Hartford, his second pro fight, against a local kid from Waterbury, the late Vinnie Debarros. The undercard featured Marvin Hagler vs Roy Jones Sr. Two days of workouts were open to the public. My brother and I attended both days and ran into into Ray as he was entering the Hartford Civic Center on day two. His was a charmer for sure. The workouts and sparring sessions were awesome. We felt at the time that we were in the presence of an all time great.
This is a true gem. I am also impressed by the tactics and strategy of Ray's partner in the first half of the vid, would love to know who that guy was cause he's also incredible. People who aren't into counterpunching/defensive style will have difficulty appreciating the mind work employed here by both LEonard and his partner. All the subtleties, feints, proactive defensive maneuevres, set-ups, footwork, arm controlling... this is BOXING in my book. hands down Sugar Ray you're my idol
Excellent comment and observations Sir!! I was thinking virtually the same thing watching this. People who don't box, spar etc.... don't realize how intense the mental pressure is for a fighter when going against a capable opponent in the ring whether it's an actual fight or intense sparring. This is a study in feints, ring awareness, gauging your mans strengths and weaknesses, patterns habits etc....both these gents are impressive Here. Their sparring looks more Elite than actual bouts today.
Hi ring IQ and great timing.....after all these years and we can't help talking about this era and four of the greatest torchbearers of boxing history....
🤣🤣🤣🤣 you don't know boxing period!!! Leonard would wipe the floor with fraud, and leonard took Hagler to school after 5 yrs off in the ring man some people don't belong, commenting on these videos, it's Mohammed Ali srr and third is leonard Mayweather is around 18th like all the experts put him FACTS!!!
The lesson I learned from watching this fight for me is as follows! When you meet a talent or challenge that is beyond your expectations you have to first admit that to your self! I’m in way over my head! To have any chance of success you Then have to go outside your comfort zone! And lock in on the unknown quantity that is within somewhere deep! Not in desperation but in an acceptance of the situation and openness to,…… Well!..Walking on water! And not getting wet! You gotta tap into something else outside your normal perimeters! So being confident in yourself, where you are right now is good, but it may not be the reality! It might not be enough!
Ray, how are you? Is this footage from '90 or '91? This is Davis Miller. I'm wondering if I was there -- and if this is the day after I gave you a copy of Bruce Lee's "Game of Death." You're the man! Most skillful fighter I've ever seen in any weight division!
I'm one of those fans that you're referring too. I must admit that I do revere the great fighters of the past. Why not? They were a part of my youth. I do agree with you though concerning Floyd Junior. He is a great fighter and would have been in any era.
Maybe they thought he could do it on the night..., they do say the last thing to go on a boxer is his punch, so possibly he thought he could take him out early, who knows. I read they took Camacho as an opponent as he had struggled against Duran in his previous fight, one a lot of people thought Roberto won......atleast he learnt from that defeat, a true legend
Wow! SRL is in amazing shape! Interesting for the first 3 minutes I could a hear someone making a "Bruce Lee imitated cat's voice" each time a punch is being thrown:) Is that Sugar Ray doing that sound or his sparring partner?
thats the sweet science right there....you see ray able to just bob and weave a bit and walk kinda slow right up to his opponent and the opponent wont throw anything...that takes prescence and mastery...he had beautiful headmovement and kind of connected to his opponent..that is what it is like when you are far superior to the guy you are fighting.... for you everything is slow motiion...for your opponent he has to keep covered and tight, and everything is fast motion...
I learned so much from this footage. Footwork, positioning, feints and control. Pure genius!
What do you mean by positioning ??
@@syrusg9542 He probably means distance and setting up angles

love how smooth and how light his feet are when he's moving and setting up hook combos. perfect practice makes perfect...
TheExecutioner67 he had weights on too.

Happen to notice the Socker Boppers on the opponents hands?

Leonard's footwork is fantastic

I wish we had more footage of these legends sparring and training...
Ray is what I imagine Bruce Lee would move like as a boxer. Beautiful sparring
Same
I love the way he moves so smooth slick with it

Good work Detective b1j1b1
This was when Leonard made Lalonde starve himself. This was no Light Heavyweight fight. It was a catch weight. Great fighters don’t do catch weight.
@@Bloxdio_God Leonard is a great fighter
just goes to show how quick Ray Leonard was in his day , one of the best fighters to have ever lived
This was an older Leonard in these sessions. Not in his prime.😊

Bruce Lee in the House let Him know Who the Boss is Ray 😂😂😂 legend
Too fucking smooth 🤌
haha loving the kung fu sounds might have to rip a couple of them out next sparring sesh :)
Not 2 fighters trying to punch each others head off. Restrained, skilled sparring that's how you learn.
Dip, Dip. Dip.Dip Ray. Funny how you & "Cholo" both do That Bruce Lee Owl Hoot. Forever an inspiration SUGAR.
This is vintage footage of the 4th best boxer of all time!!! I could watch these sessions all day.

Leonard Lee lol
Assuming red shorts 4:45 was playing the role of “Hearns” 🤷🏻
I'm a big Mayweather fan, but I think Ray had a little something extra. He was more of a killer in the ring. He was more of a puncher.
You are correct. Leonard was a killer and a much harder puncher than he was given credit for.
The amount of money i would pay to watch him spar floyd...
what Floyd got to do with this old video of Leonard sparring ?
+majah paine it didn't. I was the one that made the reference ffs. what an idiot
M Maash awwww shut you're obsessed with Mayweather you see Leonard and Mayweather on your weak mind.
majah paine obsessed with Floyd??? loll naa I would say I'm obsessed with boxing though. Can't lie it would be a beautiful fight though
M Maash what about Pacquiao why you pactards never mention Pacquiao against Leonard cause you lost faith in Pacquiao and you know it
Sugar ray Leonard great boxer.
would be nice to know who he was training for? judging by the height of the sparring partners im gonna say maybe Hearns II or Lalonde.
Good call.
I thought the 89 Hearns fight but didnt think of LaLonde at all.
Lalonde
He was clearly a fan of Bruce Lee 🔥
This serious training video turns into a funny one. Haha
Damn what year was this classic

Lmao he channeling Bruce Lee 🤣
Amazing
So crazy how ray was inspired by Bruce but how great ray was
