You are a great teacher! Thank you for posting these lessons free of charge. I'm 64 years young and have been playing guitar since I was 5. My dad taught me mostly and he was self-taught. I learned enough to get by as a rhythm player all these years, but now I would like to be able to play some simple leads. So I decided to start by learning the scales that I never learned in the beginning. I came across your videos and have been practicing along with them for a while now. Lo and behold.... I'm learning a bunch! And I have you to thank! You are appreciated, my friend. THANK YOU!
It's nice to see how the music, the blues in particular has this ability to emotional and bring people with a kind soul. Sorry for my english, but i'm italian man :-)
I'm also 64 and I love this simplified Robert Johnson piece, it's just wonderful! It's inspired me to try the real thing again! Thank you so very much for this! Time to see if my eyesight and arthritis are up to this...
I have to echo everyone else in praising your teaching. I’ve tried learning from some faultless and accomplished guitarists on TrueFire but most of them take you part of the way and then throw you in at the deep end. You explain every single note, chord and technique. I’m 70 and have played since I was 17 but have improved noticeably since finding your informative videos. Thanks again Adrian.
I've been playing for almost 50 years and have watched a LOT of UA-cam video lessons. You're a very good teacher. You don't make it at all about you and it's not ridiculously broken down to every single note. You also make good choices in terms of what you decide to teach. Keep up the good work.
We cannot deny the influence of Robert Johnson on so many players! He gets all the credit he deserves and more! So many great blues guys are from his era! Well done
I've been practicing this tune daily for two months. I'm still clumsy, but totally on the way with it. I'm a lifelong beginner on my axes, but getting closer to that intermediate mark. I love practicing at mid-life as guitar is a brilliant mental escape for me. Helps to blow those blues away. Thanks Adrian. And I really love the Wire songs. Ex-Lion tamer is a song I've played for years but I play it much better thanks to these excellent lessons. Oh, and the Cure stuff. Love em!
Thank you, Adrian. You’re an excellent teacher! I can’t begin to count the number of online teachers I’ve experienced and you are one of the best. Dan in Connecticut, USA
How can anyone give this a thumbs down? He plays well, starts you out with exercises, teaches you note by note, goes through it slowly and at speed...and provides free music and tabs. And I can confirm the tabs are exactly what he plays. He states clearly that this is in the style of Robert Johnson, and is not 100 percent authentic. So, truth in advertising. I learned to play a credible version of this in barely a week. My next project will be Adrian's how-to on Freight Train.
I've noticed that no matter how great the lesson is, a few people will show up just to give it a down-vote. Yes, great lesson, put a new style within my reach.
Thank you for a very good, clear lesson to this nice blues piece. I've only played a couple of years ( I'm 70 yrs old, with arthritis), but your clear teaching style has inspired me. Please keep up the good work and I'll keep practising. Thank you.
For a young chap. I would just like to give you some credit in your ability to teach. I know a million great guitar players but as far as teachers go. Nothing personal against anyone out there in guitar land. It takes a special quality to teach it. I would love to sit down with you for about a year everyday. As a matter of fact I think I will. Via you tube. Great job. Keep up the good work and thank you for taking the time to give the lessons. You are right they are not real easy but if effort is put into practicing you can learn what you are teaching. Thank you. I love this style of playing and I have always wanted to learn. I have a good feeling it won't be to much longer till I at least have a basic grip and that is where it all lol starts.
Timeless lesson...Excellent! You are a gifted musician, guitar player, and teacher. I really appreciate as you taking the view of the student, remembering that it's not all that easy. But with slowing down, patience, and practice...yes anyone can play guitar. Thank you for sharing!
That was probably the best acoustic blues lesson I've come across on youtube so far! Also the tabs on your website were extremely helpful - thank you so very much! I am definitely going to check out the rest of your stuff!
Nice. This seems like a very good place to start down the Robert Johnson road to playing old style blues. Lots of other teachers show off their chops doing this sort of thing but don't seem to really get down to the details of how to do it. I can see your lesson easily turning into a real springboard for those of us trying to understand how "that sound" is made. Good deal!
This is an amazing lesson. Thank you! I've wanted to figure our Robert Johnson stuff for a long time but had no idea how to start. Your lesson is just what I needed.
My grandfather was a Travis and Atkins style finger picker. He he always said the hardest part was training the Right thumb, you are a great teacher! This stuff sounds simple but it takes more practice than people realize
I've just discovered this after listening to some Robert Johnson. Tthis is simply awesome. I'm very much a beginner but will be practicing this a little bit each day. Your teaching is so clear and precise...brilliant. Thank you.
Have that same Martin ooo15 and love it. Has a great sound! Also love Robert Johnson's style. Clapton does a lot of his stuff. Thanks for your showing of this.
thanks, you learn me so much,i remember years ago i closed my friends in caves to learn me tracks!those times are gone,we have teachers like you! cheers !
This is very well done and very well presented. I am a intermediate player but have never attempted finger picking or this Thumb style. Very challenging! I will keep at it. Thank you for the great video!
Whilst I know and play this piece myself, I have to say that you did an outstanding job in teaching the wonderful Robert Johnson blues lesson. The camera angle was perfect. And I learnt from it too. It will help make me play this number better. Grand job :)
Just to say thank you for this well executed lesson. I’ve tried to get my head round this style before but you have given me the key! Gunna take some practice but I’ve got the lockdown blues and time too kill! Cheers
Very much appreciate your lesson...clear, concise, without distraction, good narration. Instruction like this is greatly beneficial to us aspiring finger pickers.
This version's still very beautiful and way easier to play. I wanted to learn this song so bad but since I'm new to blues, the original's way too hard to play for now. Thanks a lot, great lesson and cover!
Don't use a metronome unless you are playing with others. Robert Johnson never used a metronome. He had it in his head. Part of the charm of the Blues is how the player can change speed.
@@TheBlueThird Okay. I was a bit extreme there. You can use a metronome if you want but you can still get good without them. Personally I never use one because I find then super annoying.
Classical cellist here, and no you shouldn’t “always” practice with a metronome. They can make playing rushed and mechanical. Blues has a lot of innate groove that the player needs to feel - metronomes are a useful tool at times but not a necessity.
This is excellent, thank you. I’m surprised to have learned a Robert Johnson style blues from the same guy I learned ‘Sunday Morning’ from. You’re a cool guy and a great teacher.
By far the best and most helpful video that I have ever seen on UA-cam in regards to this subject. I love the way that you tutor the lesson it's just about right for those of us who can play but who don't have the info to play this stuff and no nasty bar chords to have to worry about. I am going to love playing this when I get the time to address it. Thank you so much for taking the time to record this to help people it is very much appreciated - top man.
Excellent, easy to follow because the teacher is good, drilling into the detail is important. It took me a couple of weeks to learn but I'm there. Good job!
This is brilliant, thanks very much...as someone who has been battling with finger style RJ for some time, this is a really clear and simplified explanation...cheers
Yes at 23:00, that is how they did it, just thumb and index finger. It makes a big difference in tone and sound. Many players just wrap their thumb around the neck to fret the F# for the D7/4 chord. Nicely broken down for us hard to learn types, thx!
Hya dude hav to say Av seen a lot of lessons on you tube and that has to be the most clearly laid out lesson, how slowly u did it, each bit taken apart and shown man be proud of yourself that was a superb lesson people on here should take some pointers from that.
Thank you so much for this Adrian. I'm trying to learn some Robert Johnson tunes and this really helped me a lot with the tricky style of thumb strumming combined with picking. So difficult to get just right but this piece really helped.
Love this lesson. Good material, clear explanation and great video/audio quality. Bonus points for the free high quality tab. More acoustic guitar Blues tutorials please!
I love this kind of blues, and starting learning the guitar a while back in the hopes of one day being able to play some. When I stubmbled on your video I immediately saved it to my "to learn" playlist, it sounded so awesome! Honestly it has taken me several weeks to pluck up the courage to try to learn it, but after two hours of practice tonight, I can. Thank you so much for this lesson!
"Thank you" isn't enough. I appreciate you. Your approach to teaching is beyond any other I've found. You're very kind.
I am too 64 years young and it has been the best teaching guitar lesson in mylife!

You're a great teacher. Thank you. Your patience and clarity is admirable. Thank you so much from Florida, USA.
This is very well done and very well presented. I am a intermediate player but have never attempted finger picking or this Thumb style. Very challenging! I will keep at it. Thank you for the great video!
This is the best “kind hearted woman” lesson on UA-cam.....thank you so much, you really are a wonderful teacher!

Maintaining that steady thumb ... and playing the rhythms on top of it is a great exercise. Good video. Well done!

Thanks for putting these up! Have played Folk guitar etc in college, years ago. Learning more about the Blues-stuff. Will keep watching!
Thanks for a great lesson, you actually take a complex method and make it very understandable.
This version's still very beautiful and way easier to play.
I wanted to learn this song so bad but since I'm new to blues, the original's way too hard to play for now. Thanks a lot, great lesson and cover!
greAt comment... blues is made up... so get the structure then...mess around.
Whats the version you are comparing it to?
If you practice this with a metronome, you will be amazed at the results.
Don't use a metronome unless you are playing with others. Robert Johnson never used a metronome. He had it in his head. Part of the charm of the Blues is how the player can change speed.
You should always practice with a metronome.
