Lead singer, Michael Hutchence had just started seeing Kylie Minogue. She dyed her hair and he asked her what colour and she replied 'Suicide Blonde'. The instrument was a harmonica, it was a sample played by Charlie Musselwhite. INXS never really got pigeonholed, they created their own genre often described as 'white funk'
Saw them 3 times with my gf who had platinum blond hair. Is that Suicide Blond? Saw them at Madison Square Garden. Nassau Coliseum and Radio City Music Hall, I think in three different years. The best was Radio City because that was the smallest venue. Not my type of music at all but I loved me some INXS.
I had the great privilege of meeting INXS before a show they played on the "X" tour in the early 1990s. All of those guys were so wonderful, and the late Michael Hutchence (lead singer) managed to be at once the ultra-cool rock star and a down-to-earth and very approachable human being. I went to the show as a college student, and he treated my date and I as though he had come to see us. And I was just a guy who had won backstage passes from the local radio station. My date was a huge INXS fan, and I remember that he made her feel so very special without false flattery and without being creepy. We got a genuine sense that he really appreciated everyone that came to the show as fans. I will always treasure the memory of that show, and the band was fantastic in concert as well. They put on a great concert.
Lots of 80's OZ bands deserve exposure- Hunters and Collectors 'Throw your arms around me'; The Church 'Reptile' Hoodoo Gurus 'Bittersweet' just to mention a few.
Suicide Blonde is the hair color that Kylie Minogue had for a movie role, while she was dating Michael. Michael being Michael, he wrote a song about it. He also had a great night of partying in a club one night and scribbled "Elegantly Wasted" on a napkin. That is also a song!
Then while recording Elegantly Wasted, INXS was insulted by Oasis, so he re-recorded the chorus without the other band member's knowledge from "I'm Elegantly Wasted" to "I'm Better than Oasis". Cue original mic drop.
Kylie Minogue please that fake weave Marlin Monroe had natural Suicide Blond Hair every southern California girl in the 60's 70's had Blond Hair thanks to a company called Sun-In you to could have orange Hair LOL
Really cracks me up how many in the younger generation don't know the sounds of various musical instruments. I remember watching a reaction where the individual didn't know the sound of a saxophone.
INXS have an incredible catalog of songs, and they were always funky and danceable but still cooler than everyone else. The one time I saw them in concert the opening act was Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers which was just a perfect fit.
@@misolgit69 I usually just try to enjoy a song overall. There's still some lyrics by those singers with really fucked up singing voices. Sounds good but I couldn't tell you what the lyrics were... ;)
Even though I'm more of a metalhead these days, INXS is always my feelgood go-to when I need a HUGE pick-me-up, simple songs like 'Shine Like it Does' always leave me feeling 6'2" again when I've been down in the dumps, INXS are SO much more than the easy-going lover's rock troupe that they've been unfairly tarnished with.
I saw these on a whim at Leicester De Montfort hall on the Kick UK tour (a whim as in "seemed like a good idea but hadn't heard a single song by them")- one of the best concerts I've ever been to. "Shine Like it Does" was majestic.
This was one of the most popular bands in the world for a time in the 90’s. Extremely talented, played so many different instruments and so many hits. They deserve a place in Rock Hall of Fane
One of my favourite bands, I discovered their music early 80’s and was lucky to see them twice. I love every album but they started to get world famous from Listen Like Thieves through Kick to X when I think they reached their absolute peak. Pick any song from any of those albums and you won’t go too far wrong.
Saw them live and it was a really old guy playing the harmonica and he was brilliant. Michael Hutchins explained that a suicide blonde meant that she was “dyed” by her own hand as opposed to a salon do.
Didn't matter what your favorite genre of music was in the 80s, just about everyone liked INXS. INXS was technically considered a New Wave band though they drew inspiration from many other genres such as punk, funk, acid house and blues. The instrument Lex questioned in the beginning and throughout is called a "blues harp". Its is a special type of harmonica.
Suicide Blonde interestingly enough was a hair color. I do believe he was talking about Kylie. You should check this song out live at Wembley in 91. You will get to see about 80k people moving in unison. Crazy!
For a band that had such a short life due to Michael's death, they are incredibly impressive. Hope try more of their songs. They deserve the attention 👏
You know they're from Australia, and hit it big internationally in the late '80s thru the '90s, until Michael Hutchence overdosed and they were never the same after. A 'Suicide Blonde' is a girl who did a home peroxide job - they can be OK, or burn the scalp out with no warning. That sound was from a harmonica that had some 'Tremelo' fed thru the amplifier, or possibly 'Vibrato'. These guys were aces in the '90s. If you haven't already, try WHAT YOU NEED, DISAPPEAR, BEAUTIFUL GIRL, and NEW SENSATION.
michael didn't overdose. He hanged himself in a sydney hotel room due to worries over losing custody of his daughter. bob geldof, paula yates, and the british press put the rope around that sensitive soul's neck. it might as well have been murder.
Back in the oooooooolllld days (before modern hair dyes/bleaches), the methods used to lighten hair were often destructive in the long run, causing hair follicles to thin, weaken and die. This led to the term 'suicide blonde'. I've always taken the song to be about 'someone' who dyed their hair and sought to be part of a crowd/someone's lover. At the time, he was either seeing Kylie Minogue or Paula Yates. You might like to watch the interview Michael Hutchence did with Paula (she was a host of The Big Breakfast, a morning show but for younger audience than is the norm), they essentially fell in love DURING THE INTERVIEW, he left Kylie, and the rest is both history and tragedy.
The song was written when he was with Kylie As the album ‘X’ which Suicide Blonde was on came out in 1990 and Michael and Kylie were together from 1989 to 1991 then he was with model Helena Christensen from 1991 to 1995 and then was with Paula Yates from 1995 to his death in 1997
Live Baby Live version is my favorite. I was at the concert in Wembley. I show the video to my kids. they can't believe the number of people there. The sound is a Mic'd harmonica
I believe it's a sample of a harmonica, but then played back through a synth (likely keyboard-controlled) to get that specific effect. It sounds cool in the song!
I love Inxs since I was 11 years old. I am now 42 years old. I'm not satisfied with what the tabloids did to Michael. And his sudden death. This song refers to the first women who bleached their hair. And the product was so strong, that some even died in the salon.
I first saw INXS at the Pen (Peninsula Hotel) in Mandurah, Western Australia way back in the 80's before they were famous, back when they would drink with the fans after the gig...and Michael was pure sex personified, even back then. Every female in the pub gravitated straight towards him, but instead of being jealous the guys absolutely loved him and bought him drinks. Such a staple of Australian pub music, forever remembered and severely missed. X
I am a 90s girl and I love this band .. I have no shame in admitting that when I first heard this song I thought they were saying " soup inside a bowl " alright I have some shame.. 😄
We saw INXS in 1987 and 1991. Truly amazing experience. Michael Hutchence was THE MOST BEAUTIFUL human being I'd ever seen. He oozed passion and sexuality, not to mention a fantastic performer. That "old guy" was most likely Australian blues legend Charlie Musselwhite. He played on the original record and he's (still) a fantastic musician.
Finally someone gets the original reference to’suicide’ blonde
If you watch INXS, always try the live version particularly at Wembley, GREAT live band, we used to see them local in the late 70's
