- Recorded at Birdy's Bar & Grill, Indianapolis, Indiana on May 21st, 2012
I'm a professional concert photographer who shoots stills and has never had any interest in video, but I got a Nikon D800 and said "hey... why not record a song?" So I figured I'd record one of my favorite tunes from this incredible powerhouse of a three-piece.
And I think it turned out brilliantly all things considered. I only had an 85mm f/1.4 prime on the camera and I used autofocus (which I have since learned not to use for video). I honestly didn't think it was going to turn out at all and I almost stopped filming after a minute. The whole time I saw the audio meter clipping and thought it was going to be awful... but hey, don't take my word for it. It's great!
Check out this short clip of Guthrie Govan shredding on his fretless guitar: • The Aristocrats - See ...
Do you wanna zoom in a little more? I'm having trouble seeing the atoms
You win Nathan. That stupid comment cracked me the F up. Thanks for the laugh mate.
Nathan - Cute
Best Comment Ever 🤣
6 years ago you had a really sad comment in this video that somehow got 200 likes. Every guitar player loves the zoom nab.
Guthrie is one of the greatest living guitar players of our times. Period.
The D chord at 00:54, the only part of Guthrie's repertoire I can safely say I can play.
LOL
i can't play that
Please teach me the D chord...
You sir are a God.
I'm glad that the drummer didn't join dream theater. I think they would have held him back! This guy is on a different level! I would love to jam with them all!
That's definitely some of the sweetest guitar tone I've ever heard. The more I watch these past performances, the more I miss his Suhr days. Marco is ridiculous too. I'm glad somebody is keeping this genre of music alive. But hey, like Fast Eddie said, "...Checkers sells more than chess."
The thing about Guthrie is that he's 100% musical 100% technical, that makes him 200% human. that solo is insane, absolute madness. putting aside his chops, how does he think of phrases like that. his other improvised solos are usually insane anyways. but this one is... i don't know i'm speechless. im blown away just like the first time i watched his solo in chick corea's spain
There are a lot of great players out there, but because of the near-inhuman fluidity and fluency of these 3...I swear they appear to enjoy the music exponentially more than the audience...
What I love about Guthrie is that he's not just a technician. He's a real artist.
He plays amazing that's true, but he also composes music that is his own and sounds incredible.
ROCK ON!
In 3:02 he failed entering to the next part of the song... "improvise like a boss and no one will ever notice" And that's what he did. He's god.
at 4:54, holy shit, those three notes with one finger at that speed in perfect time.
50% full hd 50% focusing
I think that´s kinda charming...
Javier Serrano Like I said, it was my first time shooting a video ever and I didn't know what to do. I'm a stills photographer. I have used manual focus on ever video since.
PLEASE shoot more of these of whaterer you want, that camera is amazing, and the sound was incredible. (I´d love to see your pictures too)
***** Thanks Ismael! Photos are found over at concart.net. :-)
Hurling insults - the technique of those who can't debate a point maturely and with substance.
GG, MM and BB, what an assembly of musical badasses! Thanks for the upload!
i live 1 mile from Birdy's and i didn't knew they were coming i would had been there
Guthrie Govan + Papa Lazaroo t-shirt = Awesome.
It was literally the first video I ever recorded in my life. I didn't even plan on trying until 15 seconds before I hit record. I had no idea it would work. I didn't think it would at all since the meter was clipping the whole time.
Ultimately, I had no concept of best practice for filming video. In the few I have done since I have done primarily manually focusing. The lens doesn't zoom, so it's all focus you have complaint with. Sorry.
Man fuck the haters, I think this is one of the best renditions of the song out there. And tbh I like how the video came out, me and friends have tripped on this video way too many times during college. Cheers :)
You nailed it friend! Very well done.
Amazing job cameraman, thanks for sharing, and post the other videos dude, these are truly the best Guthrie's recordings image-wise
Yes, it IS a great video with good recording quality! I'm afraid I was just learning about Guthrie and these guys in 2012. Otherwise I might have been at the same show here in Indy. Thanks for this great snippet of mastery! rb
This is THE best video on UA-cam.....
Nothing to apologize about, I find it more enjoyable than other static videos of their gigs, it captures the stage in a cool and different way. It may be casual, but still it is awesome.
I have watched this video several times. Really really like the way you captured it.Also the sound is fantastic. :)
my eyes are bleeding but that's okay because I don't need eyes to enjoy Govan's badassery
Simply unbelievable.
Love this band!! These guys are amazing .
love how you knew to cut to marco's feet right before he started the double bass madness on the heavy part
hey adam he captured guthrie's great live on a highest quality. it's nice vid to watch and to listen cause it's hd the sound is good and the capture also. it's only guthrie's frame but very nice. only focus isn't well in some parts. thanks sean for uploading such a great stuff. and wish more aristocrats and steven wilson lives :)
It's also funny because before most performances, the aristocrats typically ask you to out your cameras down and enjoy the show, there are many live sets of them already online. Great audio though, enjoyed more once I listened, rather than the headache inducing out of focus tomfoolery. Thanks for the post
I was there to photograph the show with permission from the band.
The camera work makes the whole thing quite artsy and just adds to the mystical powers of the Great Guthrie!
This video shoot really did turn out tremendously well...a wonderful, spontaneous effort!
Still a worthwhile video of a fine performance in a club setting. Only live vid of this piece I know of. Glad you shared it with us!
Easily one of the greatest guitarists of the modern era
Never noticed this before but the graphic on Guthrie's shirt is his face lmao. So awesome
It's 'Papa Lazarou' from 'The League of Gentlemen'
👍✌️
you can tell these guys have so much fun playing together, perfect match
Sweet. guitar picking and teasing....awesome. Love the Drumming @6:36:-))) Turn that volume up and ENJOY. Peace!!!! Thanks precious Angel Warrior for sharing this gem. So refreshing to my spirit. :-) Hearing that train whistle right now sending me hellos from Spirit. ;-) Oh Yeah. XO
The conversation between Guitar and Drums soooooo amazing!!!! @6:36 into this vid. Yummie to my soul/ :-)))
Nancy Bisset 7:30 WHEW!!!!! Thrilling sounds coming forth....Fantastic, Magnificent music to my ears. I needed this fix oh Yeah.
I'm here for the music (BTW...what a great sound!), so the drunk cameraman doesn't matters.
What a great group, all of these guys inspire me. It was cool to see the close ups of their faces while they played certain parts, looks like fun.
Brilliant capture! specially of Guthrie's playing... I think it's the clearest capture of he's playing I've seen here on youtube.. Congrats and many thanks !
OMG THIS GUTHRIE ITS ABNORMAL!! THE BEST IN ALL HIStorY OF MUSIC LOL!!!
I like this glorious HD
Got through the whole thing, then realised I wasn't even watching in HD!
Thanks for a great quality recording!
I think the camera work is unintentionally arty. I like it.
When it comes to music like this, never keep the videos to yourself! If people can't enjoy, that's their problem :)
I fukin love this band, they play insanely clean live, and they kick ass!!! thanks 4 sharing
This shit makes me want to play my drums again. Damn. MM is still a bad ass. I wish I could say I could certainly hang but it's been 10 plus years sadly since I have touched one. Been apmt living and all took on my music writing with keys and now guitar. I suppose I'll always be the drummer heart where I'm listening to that crispy ride and hat ride and that tight ass snare. Sounds like my old style. The famous words I'd hear, " Were doing a cover Rob, please less is more." Hahaha. Nice vid man.
Such a gnarly song ending...
Master of guitar.....
Anyone else think that the crowds commentary makes the tune sound more funky?
Increíble!!!!!
Thanks. Saw them last night. Amazing.
Spirit of jazz on his tshirt!
The sound quality is the most important thing here. Good job
Wow.... that was amazing. What a solid trio! The HQ vid made it awesome too!
im all stoned out and this shit kicks ass id love to be at a aristocrats show !!!!!!!!!
Regardless why it turned out the way it did, I found your camera work very hip and expressive. Not the usual, but I liked it a hell of a lot.
It's amazing that very good guitarist
Its ok Sean , don't sweat it..same for me ...I recorded a bit and of course being directly in front of bass beast beller , it blew my capture devices audio off the charts ...truly amazing trio of artists though and genuine good people...so..well done Sean!
I certainly enjoyed this vid and performance. My Thanks for your upload man!
Superb!!
I really enjoyed it very much! Thank for your effort. What an excellenet band.

Great footage, thanks for sharing!
OMG! what a song! insanneee!
please do more of these, this is amazing
AWESOME!!!!
Really great stuff here. Lot of skill on display.
I for one dig the video as is and appreciate the time and effort spent to film it and bring this music it to 50k+ more.
"I don't understand why women don't wanna hear this shit!" hahaha @ dude in background at the beginning of the video
Its fucking pointless to comment on Guthrie's playing so.. Cheers to vid quality man, glorious indeed. Thank you! :)
So cool and great play !!!

very nice recording!
Fucking love this song. The heavy part is amazing.
Julián Perdomo It is. That's really the only part where the camera's mic couldn't handle it. :-)
glorious HD? you mean Glorious ZP (Zooming Problems!) i'm dizzy after watching this haha.. The Aristocrats are great!
Davy T Hence the part where I mentioned it was the first bit of video I had ever filmed ever and I didn't know any better.
+Davy T first learn it's focusing not zooming then crap around if you want
+Davy T
I think he was using last year's model of that camera; the one without the bacdafucup button.
Not sure what You mean... sound- and video-quality are outstanding!
Great Job!
Someone could've silenced the talking ignorants though ;)
Not at all; I doubt I'm alone in appreciating the upload.
so damn good
Great audio ! congrats !
I'd love to see an entire concert shot this way. So much more intimate.
Poorly filmed? Are you joking? This is pure art, my friend! Congratulations!
bom de ouvir melhor tocar ....muito massa
I like his funky chromatic main riff its the backbone of this transcendental jam
thanks mate!!!
you keep complaining the recording, but i personally think its good and also that he was lucky to catch on camera, such a cool improvisation by Mr. Govan... i even downloaded the video and extracted the audio to listen in my iPod...
“I don’t understand why women don’t want to hear this shit”...same dude same
amazing ! going to see this guys on 20.2 in tel aviv !
גם אני הולך
+ori erenraich היה מדהים :)
I actually like the camera work D: it is hypnotizing
