I am still speechless how the special effects of a 30 Million movie could look three times better than anything that is produced today with 200 Million.
One of the best sci-fi movies ever made. 15 years later and it still looks so good, the action was great and Sharlto Copley’s performance as Wikus was fantastic, he killed it in his first role.
This is such a well crafted movie. It makes good use of the documentary style, throws out the tropes of super-advanced or monstrously aggressive aliens for somewhat stupid and pitiable ones, has a decent helping of comedy and action, and uses it all as a metaphor for apartheid. Top notch entertainment imho.
@@swanronson173 Thank God the aliens are not strategic or else they would obliterate us with the potent advanced weapons. ------ It's not that they are stupid, they are in a situation fighting to find food on an Alien planet. ------ Such an amazing concept and such out of this world movie execution. Wikus was a bad guy with no empathy for the aliens until he turned part alien himself and became an outcast from human society whom the higher-ups wanted to use as a weapon. Until that point, he was a bureaucratic drone who did what he was told without questioning its morality. He was an example of what Hannah Arendt called "the banality of evil." He redeemed himself, but there was a strong element of self-interest in his actions.
I agree with your take that Wikus is an example of what Arendt called the “banality of evil”; however, I’ll push back on the claim that he was a “bad guy". District 9 holds up a mirror to each of us. Wikus’s actions lack deliberate malice or intent to harm, instead reflecting an uncritical acceptance of the prejudice around him, to which he unthinkingly contributes. If badness includes unexamined complicity in harmful systems, then all of us have the potential to perpetuate harm by passively accepting societal biases or by simply doing our jobs without reflection. This insight pushes us to consider our own responsibilities as individuals-to remain vigilant about the roles we play in larger systems, even when our actions feel benign or routine.
Excellent analysis. I'm glad to see many comments mention the concept of the banality of evil! In so many modern reactions to the film that I've seen, the reactors are too quick to label Wikus as an irredeemable scumbag without appreciation for the fact that this is crucial to his arc; At the start, Wikus truly is little more than a cog in a broken machine- it's a tough pill to swallow, but the reality- as is beautifully illustrated in this film, is that if someone is so thoroughly entrenched in a society like his, where cruelty is routine, and wicked actions are constantly downplayed, the everyman can very easily become complacent, and even complicit without even grasping just how far they've fallen. Powerful stuff
Glad you reacted to this one! It's an amazing flick. I still maintain it was (and kinda still is) the prefect template for a reboot RoboCop. Just when everyone thought God tier Sci-fi ended with the 80s/90s, a movie that's a solid candidate for best of all time comes out. This movie is absolutely incredible, it blew everyone's mind's when it came out and like Jurassic Park it's the kind of movie that will hold up forever. Everything about it is so good. Even if it was a traditional sci-fi film it would have been incredible but the documentary style adds so much to it and it's the most convincing use of that style that i have seen. You forget you are watching a movie. The project actually started as a Halo movie but it quickly became it's own thing. One of the things in the movie that i think speaks to it's origins though is that all the alien weaponry are references to iconic video game weapons. Of all the things i thought i would get to see on the big screen, the Cerebral Bore was definitely not one of them lol Amazing movie
Sharlto Copley is just such an underrated actor. He does a perfect mercenary/psychopath in "Elysium" and is a total hoot in a wide variety of roles in "Hardcore Henry"
Hey Jen, I think the "District 9" documentary style takes it in a different but great direction from so many of the polished slick sci-fi movies of today. ------ Our technology has become so great that we often don't let the idea dominate the movie and let the CGI be the filler it was intended to be. "District 9" skirts this line amazingly well. kudos to Neill Blomkamp for taking me on an amazing journey.
One of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made! I've been waiting 15 years for a sequel, but it looks like that it may not happen anytime soon. Nominated for 4 Oscars including Best Picture but lost to THE HURT LOCKER.
I saw this when it first came out. it so different from any other alien movie. I loved your reaction to it! Again, watching your reaction was like seeing it for the first time! I remain, humbly, one of your biggest fans. Thank you.
The Director of this movie also made Elysium with Matt Damon. It has a similar feel. Many people don't like Elysium, but I think it's underrated. He also made Chappie, which I recognize is not a good movie, but for some reason I appreciated it.
It's actually a small miracle they could make such a crazy, high concept action movie with tons of aliens and they made it for ~$30 mil. So many of the CGI techniques in this movie are ahead of their time. Really wish more scifi was made like this with real alien tech and lore.
Hey Jen, This movie is so innovative and was made on only a $30 million dollar budget and was guided by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Director). The making of this movie was a triumph of indie movie making. -------- Jen When this came out it literally blew my mind. ------ Showing ideas are more important than budget.
The prawns they're likening the aliens to are not the kind that swim in the sea, but the Parktown prawn, aka African king cricket. They're among the largest extant insects in the world reaching up to 7cm long (2.8 inches) and are related to Peter Jackson's nightmare fuel, the giant weta (also up to 7cm, but significantly fatter). The aliens definitely more closely resemble them than the sea creatures.
It's amazing that this tremendous, innovative SF movie, which was a huge success when it came out in 2009, has been almost forgotten today, with very few views by reactors. One reason they had a comparatively low budget was that they were allowed to use, for their District 9 scenes, part of a real slum that was being demolished. Therefore, they did not have to build any sets for those scenes. Everyone wants a sequel, but sadly, it is unlikely there will ever be one.
The alien camp was a real suburb of Soweto, South Africa called Chiawelo. They shot it in winter when everything was dry and brown to make it look more bleak. Ironically, while they were shooting, Chiawelo itself was undergoing forced relocations in real life where residents were being moved to government subsidized housing under the Reconstruction and Development Programme.
I wondered how long it was going to take you to finally watch this movie. Director Neil Blomkamp also directed the movie "Elysium", starring Matt Damon and once again, Sharlto Copley who played the main character Wikus in this movie. I highly recommend watching that one too.
This is a fantastic movie. MNU is pure evil. Especially Wikus cold blooded father in law. Corporate greed. I would love a sequel. Actor Sharlto Copley did an amazing job playing Wikus. Jen, I recommend the futuristic sci-fi Elysium (2013)staring Matt Damon. It's has a good rating. Also you'll get to see Sharlto Copley (Wikus) play a completely different character. The contrast between Wikus and his character in Elysium is amazing. He looks so different. Hope you'll react to it.
Love this one from the release. Definitely a great take on what a refugee is and how they're treated, how you are treated as one, and so one. Best way, IMHO, on showing tall the angles.

Hey Jen, Thank you for reacting to this amazing movie Dasha. Neill Blomkamp did an amazing job on this, I loved it! ------ The concept of this movie is so innovative, action-packed, thought-provoking, horrifying, and endearing all at the same time to simultaneously illicit all these emotions from me to the next level, very few movies I have seen make me want to be a professional writer or storyteller. This is one of them.
28:12 Easter eggs! Tetra Vaal (or Tetravaal) has its claws sunk into Neil Blomkamp's universe. It's his first short film, and also plays a major role in his movie Chappie. Apparently Elysium is also part of this universe. I personally enjoyed all of them and think you would, too. District 9 is outstanding, Chappie is right up my alley (even Die Antwoord, I still love them), and Elysium is definitely a fun watch.
This is a very underrated film. I remember watching it in the theater when it came out...and I was captivated by it. A great departure from the regular "alien come to earth" theme.
Watching it again, I actually wonder if the exoskeleton was sentient or at least somewhat organic. It knew who were combatants and allies without a driver, opened up it's cockpit for him, and it started to look exhausted near the end. The suit even opened up to let him out before just falling backwards instead of forwards like if it was just a suit. Might be looking too much into it but it looked interesting.
The director Neill Blomkamp adapted this from his short film. Currently he’s talked about a sequel in the works aiming to be much larger in scale and length. For the time it was released it was a success because if it’s low budget. I believe he saved costs by film in Johannesburg and using unknown actors at the time. Since then Blomkamp has done more sci-fi movies and shorts. He even released an anthology series named “Oats Studios”. The main actor Sharlto Copley went on to do more film as this becoming his breakout role. Since then the two of them have collaborated at lot. I’d recommend Elysium and Chappie. I still wish for Blomkamp to do a Star Wars film but nothing so far.
Yup. That was Vicus at the end as a prawn making the flower. Sadly we won't get a District 10. The movie's weapons were designed for a Halo movie that was going to be made but was scrapped.
truly outstanding thumbnail jen oscar worthy , just awesome 🔥 as is this reaction everyone is going to locve this one your commentary and jenerisms throughout are magical 🔥💙🔥💙
It is indeed a satire - it’s about apartheid and the evictions from the townships. When you noted the alien’s name being Christopher Johnson, that’s a reference to the way that many black people in SA had to adopt (or were given) English names so white people would find it easier to interact with them. For instance, my in-laws’ housekeeper was known to them as Ellie - but her real name was Phelisiwe.
This film was nominated for best picture at the Oscar’s that year. One of the very best sci fi movies ever made. I hope it never gets a sequel. It’s perfect.
Christopher was probably either one of the leaders or more likely a technician who survived whatever killed the others. That would be how he knew to do the tech things he was doing and why he was smarter than the others. If they did have castes like insects, then a genetic memory could explain why his son also knew so much, that is they are born with the basic knowledge their caste needs. The RPG rocket exploded after it was caught because they had a self-destruct fuse in them. This blows up the rocket f it misses or fails to explode normally so the battlefield has one less piece of dangerous ordnance lying around. Had Vikus known that he would have thrown it away more quickly.
I really want a sequel or prequel where we get to see more of their homeworld. Though I guess not knowing where they're from and how they got here is part of why this movie is so good.

The Director of this movie also made Elysium with Matt Damon. It has a similar feel. Many people don't like Elysium, but I think it's underrated. He also made Chappie, which I recognize is not a good movie, but for some reason I appreciated it.
"He's kind of like Garrus from Mass Effect" 😍
I forgot how f*#&ing mental this film is!
I was just going to say the same thing! I forgot how good it was and how it turned all the "alien invasion" tropes upside down.
God I love this movie, I remember cackling with my dad in the theatre at the mech scene with the bullet-ball
It's hard to believe this was 15 years ago, it really holds up. Great reaction as always Jen x
It's actually a small miracle they could make such a crazy, high concept action movie with tons of aliens and they made it for ~$30 mil. So many of the CGI techniques in this movie are ahead of their time. Really wish more scifi was made like this with real alien tech and lore.
Checking boxes and hiring according to ESG/DEI guidelines weeds out writers who can/could create such works.
That's a "tactical" sweater vest that he was wearing Jen! 😂 ❤
It's crazy to think how long ago this came out, as it still feels recent. Holds up fantastically!
I never looked at prawns the same after this movie Jen
Great movie. The way they put it together, part documentary, part regular movie. Made it feel like you were watching true events.
If you liked this you will like Elysium. Chappie divides audiences.
I like the concept of Chappie, I despise Die Antwoord
One of my favorite movies, was so excited when I saw this in my feed, can’t wait to see your face when stuff starts to get real 😂
I love stories where a jerk is forced through hardship and has to learn to humility. Very Johnny Tremain.
criminal that we never got a sequel to this.
Jen,
I recommend the futuristic sci-fi Elysium (2013)staring Matt Damon. It's has a good rating. Also you'll get to see Sharlto Copley (Wikus) play a completely different character. The contrast between Wikus and his character in Elysium is amazing. He looks so different.
Hope you'll react to it.
Holy shit it’s been a while. This is one of those criminally underrated movies. It’s so well done. The world building is extravagant.
This is a great movie 🍿
Such an amazing movie! Yes, that was the protagonist with the flower at the end.
Love this one from the release. Definitely a great take on what a refugee is and how they're treated, how you are treated as one, and so one. Best way, IMHO, on showing tall the angles.
As dramatic and suspenseful as this movie is, the comedic moments and jokes that happen unexpectedly are really hilarious!
Thank you Miss Jen for the movie. Have a good day.😊
Love your reactions, Jen! This was a mind blower!
Another great Alien movie to watch is...
Alien Nation (movie 1988)...
p.s. the tv show was good too.
Hi Jen hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thanks John you too!
This really is a great movie. Happy to see your reaction.
36:30 "Pig." 😲 I definitely didn't remember _that_ moment! 🐖
Another excellent evening spent with best re-actor and the best chat ! I do appreciate your final three or four minutes where it's all you and your thoughts . Great work from a great Lady .
Thanks lou!
I don't think I've ever seen you THIS invested, Jen! Also : "Garrus from MASS EFFECT" what now? Do you have a second channel where you play games?!
How have I never noticed the ultrasound images at the end? Thanks for catching that!
This reaction just reinforced my opinion that you guys are the best reactors on UA-cam!
This movie blew me away when I saw it opening night, and it's been one of my all-time favorites ever since. It's just so good.
I love the music in this movie.
Just found your channel through UA-cam recommendation. I'm happy that I have. Love your reactions!

This movie is one of the best sci-fi movies ever!
There absolutely IS a sequel in development. Niell Blomkamp confirmed he is working on the story and that it will happen.
9 hours ago is crazy a literal modern classic
Hey Jen, Thank you for reacting to this amazing movie Dasha. Neill Blomkamp did an amazing job on this, I loved it! ------ The concept of this movie is so innovative, action-packed, thought-provoking, horrifying, and endearing all at the same time to simultaneously illicit all these emotions from me to the next level, very few movies I have seen make me want to be a professional writer or storyteller. This is one of them.
I believe this was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
This is such a great movie.
You'd probably enjoy 'Alien Nation' (1988). James Caan, Mandy Patinkin, Terence Stamp. Sci-fi / action / thriller.
I love district 9
Watching it again, I actually wonder if the exoskeleton was sentient or at least somewhat organic. It knew who were combatants and allies without a driver, opened up it's cockpit for him, and it started to look exhausted near the end. The suit even opened up to let him out before just falling backwards instead of forwards like if it was just a suit. Might be looking too much into it but it looked interesting.
Dude got taken out by a flying pig 😂
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
There's a good video on here about the effects: "How Did District 9's VFX Look SO GOOD?"
I hope this gets a sequel
It is indeed a satire - it’s about apartheid and the evictions from the townships. When you noted the alien’s name being Christopher Johnson, that’s a reference to the way that many black people in SA had to adopt (or were given) English names so white people would find it easier to interact with them. For instance, my in-laws’ housekeeper was known to them as Ellie - but her real name was Phelisiwe.
This film was nominated for best picture at the Oscar’s that year. One of the very best sci fi movies ever made. I hope it never gets a sequel. It’s perfect.
This was one friggin crazy movie!
yes that was him at the end
Chappie also includes Sharlto Copley vs Hugh Jackman + intro to Die Antwoord! Turned out to be a real gem!
It's a shame Die Antwoord are evil.
As always, good summary. 😁👍
Based on your thumb, maybe it was too early to launder the blankets! 🤣
This is one of my favorite movies.
You will keep on doing 180s on Vicus. It's a fun ride.
One of the greatest modern sci fi flicks!
Oh wow, one of my favorite movies, it's so unique and well done.
This is such a thought-provoking movie and before it was released, I hadn't even thought about South Africa having a film industry.
I really want a sequel or prequel where we get to see more of their homeworld. Though I guess not knowing where they're from and how they got here is part of why this movie is so good.
Chappie is your next must-see now...another Neill Blomkamp movie!
❤ this movie 👍
