  • Which calibers are best for hunting or protection from dangerous animals? Which provide deep penetration? Some have shot bullets through water jugs, but what about a dense stack of paper? The results are surprising and maybe not what you expected!!

Very interesting, thank you. I think the biggest determining factor in deep bullet pentration is bullet construction. Hard cast bullets are the absolute best when you desire the deepest pentration, especially in pistol caliber cartridges. Bullets that stay in one piece, generally penetrate the deepest. Remington Core lokt bullets, your choice for the 30-30 are known to be extremely good bullets, that generally stay in one piece and shoot completely through most game. They have been my go to bullet for over 50 years. Great information, enjoyed your video

First of all, that gun collection 🤤 I just drooled a little.
Fellow 🇨🇦 here and in the market for a new lever action takedown and struggling between the 45/70 and a .44 mag which are really the only viable options in a takedown rifle. Why nobody builds one in a 30-30 is a mystery. Anyway, I’m leaning towards the .44 for a few reasons. Most of my shots on Vancouver island at deer have been inside of 150 yards. The deer here are mostly under 150 pounds. And the .44 mag ammunition is easier to find and about 30-40$ a box cheaper.
Lastly I want a gun that’s fun to shoot and not going to beat the shit out of me 😂
Having said that, I’m not afraid of the 45/70 so would still be open to hearing it’s arguments.
This is one of the best penetration demonstrations on UA-cam, and I have spent the last few weeks watching them all. Well done. Thanks for posting. Would love to hear your thoughts on these two calibres.

Hey thank you for your kind comments. I grew up on Vancouver Island so I understand your hunting world a bit.
If you’re choosing between the two, you’ll always get more energy out of a 45/70 and if you hand load you could also a soft load. But it’ll always kick. I find the 44 mag still a nice little kicker only because they are in a lighter gun. Which if you’re hunting and carrying a gun, a lighter package is nice.
I’ve hunted with magnums over the years, but have come to appreciate a moderate caliber. The reason long range shooters use smaller/intermediate sized calibers is because they can be more accurate. Some people find it hard to get a 6 inch group (or something acceptable for hunting) at 1,000 with a magnum rifle. I’ve coached some guys who really struggled to achieve an acceptable group for hunting at 200 yards with their 7 rem mag. So until they could do that I recommend they hunted with a 7-08 or something in the intermediate category. Somewhere is that sweet spot of manageable recoil and accuracy, with down-range energy and velocity. So for the category of game I hunt, I found the 6.5 creedmoor with a 156 grain bullet at 2700 fps to be the sweetest for me. I can actually shoot it at the longer distances it’s effective for hunting at.
So for your game, terrain, enjoyment, and accuracy, what of the two calibers would you choose? Either will do it. A buddy once said,”better is a small hole in the right spot than a big hole in the wrong spot.”
If it was me I think a 44 mag with the right ammo would offer good bullet performance, be enjoyable and manageable to shoot effectively, and a nice little package to carry around in the thick bush for many hours.
On my shelf in 44 mag I have 300 grain HSM Bear Load ammunition, 225 grain ftx Hornady - great for a flatter deer load, and whatever is cheapest for range fun.
Hope this helps. All the best! Let me know what you decide to go with.

I liked your comparison video. I was shocked by the performance of 6.5 Creedmoor vs .7mm mag. The hard hitting 30-30 held its own. The .357mag performance was nice and my Henry carbine holds 9-1 which makes it a hog killing machine. Thanks

Seems like 30-30 still competitive after 1-1/4 centuries. Wow! Nice testing

94 grains were left of the 156 grain Berger 6.5 mm bullet. About 60%.

That proves what I always say, Speed does not equal penetration. If you handloaded the 7mm Mag with Berger 168 or 180 VLD's at a slower FPS, the 7mm would have probably out penetrated the 6.5. You had a light for caliber bullet with a exposed soft lead tip which will not do as well as a heavy VLD bullet going slower.
I still enjoyed the video as the old 30-30 170gr did pretty well, Its what I shoot in my old 336

Yes, I agree with you completely. Ideally I would have loaded the 7mm rem mag with a Burger 168 gr VLD. That would have performed much better.

I pretty much guarantee that the 357 would've kept on keeping on with a good 180 grain Hardcast load.
