Cool detail work. Never thought about the grain spill. Just scratchbuilt a CR coil car #602309 it about 90% accurate. Next up are the Greenville Steel Car Southern bulkhead flat #116109 and Portec Southern coil car #62326. If you can't buy them you build them. Same goes for tank cars.
Great technic, Dan! I have several Intermountain Canadian grain covered hoppers(& other covered hoppers) that could use that "spilled corn" look to enhance the hoppers. Thanks!👍
You made a goof Dan. That car is one of the AEX hoppers that is used in salt service hence the amount of rust, I believe that is one of several I have photos of. Didn't intend on a specific prototype but I believe AEX 14599 is that rusted. Still wait for my request to join the Facebook group to be approved.
He might use gel pens. I have used a white gel pin, size .08 and .05, before to represent chalk writing marks on sides of cars. I also have used an oil based paint marker with a .4mm point but it's a little too big for HO scale. They make gel pins in all different colors and if you can find paint markers that are fine enough you could try those. The .4mm paint markers would most likely be ok for graffiti. Hope this was helpful. 👍
@@DansRailroad2011 It doesn't look very realistic. You should use a lighter colour in the middle to represent fresh hair, then use a larger brush to streak it down the side of your head. I found this great channel, DansHairstyle2011 that shows you how to weather your head to look just like the real thing! 🤣
Right! A hopper sat all summer near my home with quite a sizeable spillage of grain on the roof. After a while, it grew and even made flowers until everything died prematurely mid-summer when heat was to high and nutrients had visibly ran out. A very neat sight and would make for interesting modelling.
Intermountain 4750's. You can get a bunch of these cars in many road names. I picked a multitude of these cars that were somewhat plain and I stripped and relettered most of them for AEX Andersons.
Can't tell you how much you've helped my weathering. Thank you, sir. God bless.
Nice tips. I like
Great video Dan and the powdered ginger replicated corn perfectly! Thanks for showing what works best to show spillage!
Thanks for your series. Very helpful! Please keep'em coming!
Great tutorial as always Dan.
Incredible work Dan...

Ginger? How would have thought, great idea. The hoppers look awesome
Which car is shown in the thumbnail? Do you show it in any of your videos? I really like how it looks.

Yup! Static grass works perfect for that exact effects.

Try white pepper, should get you what you need!
Dan would you be interested in doing an old Foster's whiskey hopper 4 Bay? If so where would I send it?
Dan, your videos are great but i have a question please? When you are doing the graffiti, what pen or pens do you use to draw the graffiti please?

Gut
Corn will grow on out of some of the cars

Who makes those Hoppers?

Looks like you may also be a drummer....
