We got changes to some gear and confirmation of others so I’ll be posting a new pre bis today
Also I must ask about Hit Cap, I see that you didn't have any hit gear for Pyroblast/Scorch. What do you think? I wanted to get in 4% hit for Pre-Bis to optimize the hit on Pyro/Scorch/FireBlast, without 4% hit my DPS seems to drop quite a bit. Thoughts? EP+Ring gives 12% hit for Fire, obviously Balefire/FFB is fine but I don't want my Pyros/Scorches/FBS missing and not refreshing.
Take this with a grain of salt but one sim I saw in the mage Discord had the final four points of hit% as being around equal to 10 spell damage each, so it seems worth taking in some slots (and also just feels bad to be missing a lot). The lowest-hanging fruit is to use the ST chest (Garments of Atal'ai Prophet) and Sorc belt as they both have hit, as well as the Breadth of the Beast wild offering trinket and possibly the Star of Mystaria neck from Strath Live. But there another 4-5 pieces with hit on them that are worth looking into as well.
@@draheim90 I will take a look. It is hard to apply with sims because of my lack of understanding, it gives little EP value >4% obviously but that 4% seems to be worth. I would be mad frustrated missing a scorch and having to reapply 5 again although I suppose that will still happen 1/100 times. 6 Second scorch applications are crucial to have a 2nd go I guess.
With the recent changes to Hot Streak I've seen a lot of success in optimized builds in regards to mana consumption. If you're still facing some mana issues as well you could potentially takes the two points from arcane and 2 excess point from the Fire tree and move them into Frost Channeling for 15% further mana reduction for FFB/Balefire. I will likely use your build but if I'm facing mana issues and resistances aren't crazy high I may rock the 0/33/18 build.
Yes good points, thank you. This is exactly what I mean, lots of people will copy the builds from the very best players but it’s about adapting talents & runes to maximise your unique situation, never be afraid to go against the meta :)
For those getting to rank 10 asap, more interested in rep grinding, and arent as interested in spamming dungeons as much like me, my early setup looks like:
Helm - Eye of Flame (because I already had it from phase 3)
Amulet - Orb of the Darkmoon (1200 DMF ticket)
Shoulders - Rugged Mantle of the Timbermaw
Back - Spritecaster Cape (because I already had it from phase 3)
Chest - Garments of the Atal'ai Prophet (because I already had it from phase 3)
Bracers - Dryad's Wrist Bindings
Weapon - Mindfang
Off-hand - Personal Spellbook (aiming for AV exalted off-hand after)
Gloves - Sorcerer's Gauntlets (the blue gloves are boe and this is the first of the 0.5 questline)
Belt - Defiler's Cloth Girdle
Legionnaire's Silk Legguards (PvP rank 8) [+23 spell damage from 2-piece pvp set]
Boots - Blood Guard's Silk Walkers (PvP rank 7) [+23 spell damage from 2-piece pvp set]
Ring1 - Advisor's Ring (can grab this right at 58)
Ring2 - Band of Boiling Blood (because I already had it from phase 3)
Trinket1 - Darkmoon Card: Decay
Trinket2 - Invoker's Void Pearl or pvp trinket
Do you think that mage will be able to compete in pvp vs shamans, spriests, and locks? Or is mage still a bit too under powered in your opinion?
In BGs mages are still very important regardless but at lvl 60 a lot of build options open up for us, I’m hoping we can stay competitive.

The list I came up with (with assistance from people in the mage Discord) is pretty similar, except for a couple things.
First, I think it's worth going for 2/6 from the honor PvP items since that comes with a bonus +23 spell damage. So you can, for example, take the PvP shoulders and hands and take the Sorc belt instead of the Arathi belt, but other combinations are possible (the PvP legs are good too).
Second, it seems like you did not prioritize hit% at all, and from a sim I saw the first four percentage points of hit are worth roughly 10 spell power each (useful for FB, Pyro, and BFB), which makes some of the +hit gear really good…though this is still a matter of debate. The best pieces that have hit look to be the wild offering trinket (Breadth of the Beast), Strath Live neck (Star of Mystaria), Sunken Temple robes (Garments of Atal'ai Prophet), Sorc belt, and maybe UBRS ring (Rune Band of Wizardry), though there are a few others that are decent enough. It’s probably worthwhile to mix in enough of these to fully cap out on all fire spells, while again ideally maintaining 4/8 Sorc set and 2/8 PvP honor set too for the tier bonuses.
Of course, it may just come down to sim differences as everything is unproven at the moment. The one I was working from also prioritized crit% as equal to around 14 spell damage, whereas yours seemed like it was around 9-10 spell damage (not suggesting one is more correct, maybe the truth is in the middle and we know weights are fickle and contextual). This also meant the one I had preferred the Nacreous Shell Necklace over the DMF neck and the Eye of the Beast as the 2nd best trinket behind Briarwood (not sure where the Draconic Emblem and Ritual Charms fall).
Also, I don't think Chains of the Lich are in the game. It's from a Strath Live boss that's only in during the scourge invasion.

There was a tweet from a dev somewhere discussing this. Basically being fire immune would screw over warlock tanks considering they use searing pain as main source of threat. I’m confident we’ll be able to do good damage but let’s see

Question: Aren't most of the 60 raid mobs immune to fire? They were back in vanilla.
That’s true but we’re 99% sure there are no fire immunities in SOD, I believe a dev confirmed it because of warlock tanking relying on searing pain, even if they had a high fire resistance (unlikely) FFB and BFB benefit from being 2 schools

The basic fire rotation is going to be:
5x scorch -> 9x BFB -> FFB and of course using fireblast on cd (or timed for procs) and weaving in pyro hotstreak procs as they occur in between casts

There’s tweets from developers suggesting they don’t, I’m fairly confident they won’t be resisting fire

The Hot streak to Head rune change is the most obvious choice to do because Fire never had a decent head rune for them and FFB was too effective to not use.
Exactly, you’d have seen 5 months ago I was begging for them to change it to the head rune, finally it’s happened and this is great!

is balefire rune worth it?
If your mana allows then balefire is very good, I know in the past I’ve said it’s the best but this time it’s even been tested on the PTR and is very strong
`what about professions?
The bis professions will likely be Enchanting + Alchemy. Tailoring is okay for pre-bis since you can craft the chest & new belt but after that it’s not that great (unless they add something). Engineering is always good if you do PvP but yeah for DPS min max then it’s Enchanting + Alchemy
Edit: I see fireblast won't waste GCD. So the debate continues. macroing with other spells vs on use /timing for hot streak. I'll likely macro. thanks for the video!
It’s off GCD and can be used while casting. There is a debate whether to just macro it to all your abilities or use it to fish for hot streak procs, using it on cd provides more raw DPS so macro’ing it to everything just means you don’t have to worry about it

What i dont understand is clearly fire will do way waaaaaay better than any other spec. Why aren’t they increasing arcane / frost spells damage
That’s true but that said frost is still pretty good, it beats most other casters and I believe Arcane is just viewed as a healing spec now, if Arcane was as powerful then mage healers would be far too strong. Its still gonna be fun in PvP though!
