I would refuse to sign something if I wasn't given enough time to read it, and when my constituents ask "what happened" I'll tell them, "I'm not signing something I can't read. They can try again in a few months without me I guess. Lookout for the next election, I'll be there even if they claim I can't be."
It's inevitable, because there are thousands of pages of new legislation and regulations coming out almost daily. The government is too big for anyone to track. The government needs to go back to its constitutionally delineated powers and perform ONLY the tasks given to it, explicitly, in the U.S. Constitution. "General welfare" does not mean "food stamps."

Agreed. The single best thing that Rand Paul could do is to tell his fellow Kentuckians to primary McConnell out of the Senate in 2026. McConnell will be 84 years old then and probably plans to retire anyway, but for now he's trying to enrich himself, his family, and his friends for the rest of their lives. It's unbelieveable that he wasn't bounced from leadership this year.

There needs to be a law limiting bills pages. No more 4000 page bills no one is going to read. This is beyond criminal.
Rather than a law banning page counts, require that all legislation be read in full in the presence of a quorum the entire time to be eligible for a vote. We would never see another bill longer than 2 pages.

Shutting down the government is not a great idea. Old people will not get their Social Security checks and poor children will not get healthcare or food, do you really want to do that to them over something that in end won't matter? I'm hoping that next year (Jan) this Omnibus procedure will be adjusted so that both parties have the opportunity to read, debate, reread, debate. This is outright thievery, kind of like snap and grab of merchandise at Walmart. One group when caught gets tried and convicted and goes to jail where as the government group does the same thing and thumbs their nose at we the people and laughs. They must think the people will continue to bend over, well guess what we can also be creative at changing this act of disrespect. How long do you think it takes to write a 4000 page bill? Certainly not a few days or weeks, maybe not even a few months. My thought is these types of bills are prepared way in advance and brought forth when they think they can get them passed, when they think they have the leverage to do it, or as a last ditch effort before many of them are booted out of office. This bill needs to be stopped. If it means the government gets shut down, then so be it.

I retired from state government, had coworkers move on to federal government positions. It was sad hearing about how almost every Christmas season through January they were working without pay because congress and senate could not pass/agree on some exorbitant bill.

As a young man, having just moved out from under my parent's roof I found the wonder of credit cards. I was able to buy things that I didn't have the cash for. I didn't have to wait while I save to buy things like I used to. I was able to get what I wanted now and worry about paying for it later. You can imagine how that worked for me, I got into debt to the point that I couldn't meet the minimum payments, I paid a few one month and the others the next month. I accrued late fees on top of the interest rate that went up for non-payment and ended up costing more than what I spent originally. I was 19 when this started, our government should be smarter than a 19-year-old

From the parts I am familiar with, Rand Paul's speech is full of misdirects, lack of context, and hypocrisy. For example, basic macro economics states that governments should run a deficit in recessions (most economic crisis as well*) but he wants a surplus. Notice how Rand Paul said 2019 in terms of balancing budget. Pre-Pandemic. Lets look at the current numbers. Right now the Euro area has a deficit spending of 7.2% to the US's 11%. Sounds really bad right? Well, in terms of economies in general and economies dealing with inflation, the US is one of the best on the planet right now. Going back to that 2019 balancing budget statement, how do you think that surpluses were achieved? Well the tax rate in EU is significantly higher than the US so I guess Rand Cut All Taxes Paul wants to raise taxes to European standards to cut the deficit. You might retort only cut the unimportant programs (lets say all research like the fusion breakthrough) to make up the loss to which I say and what about the other 97% of the deficit. This is not mentioning the deficit has been continuously shrinking by over 10% every quarter this year. This is not even mentioning how the IRS new highers (Who Rand Paul lies about) will mostly collect taxes for those making over $100k (reducing the deficit) and sending out the tax returns (still waiting on my 2020 btw). What about that day of reckoning? Do you know why people might go into debt? It is because they want to invest in something they feel will out compete the interest. Note, the US has some of the lowest interest rates on the planet. Notice through deficit spending the US economy has grown so much that the trillion dollar deficit three years ago can be entirely covered by the current budget.
